   COURIER
   High Speed Modems

The high speed, high performance modem you can plug in and forget
   about... forever.

"A perfect modem for an imperfect world."

The Courier HST Dual Standard, Courier V.32 bis, and Courier HST modems
were all designed by U.S. Robotics to fit one basic description: a modem
that provides state-of-the-art technology, unsurpassed reliability, and
straightforward simplicity. A modem that is uncompromising in every
detail, flexible enough to meet the varied needs of the Fortune 500, yet
easy to set up and use. And reliable enough to forget about.

"A modem with the future built in."

In the fast paced, high tech data communications industry, technological
development increases at an exponential rate. A "cutting edge" product
can quickly become obsolete. That's why U.S. Robotics' Advanced
Development team designed Courier modems with a unique modular
configuration. It keeps the "heart" of the Courier modem on a removable
card, allowing a V.32 bis modem to upgrade quickly and easily to the
future CCITT 28.8K bps standard when it becomes available. Rather than
resign ourselves to the future, we build it into the product.
U.S. Robotics builds Courier modems to be state-of-the-art-forever.

"A perfect modem? ... Forget about it."

As proud as we are of our Courier modems, we don't want you to think
about them. Because aside from our dedicated technical staff, nobody
wants to spend time thinking about their modem. They want it to work,
   easily and reliably.

   Courier modems work.

"All modems are not created equal."

Don't be fooled. Most manufacturers buy their components elsewhere.
That doesn't mean we do. U.S. Robotics designs and builds our own data
pump here in the U.S.A., allowing us to employ the most stringent quality
control and testing procedures. Simply put, we make the fastest, most
reliable CCITT standard data pumps in the world.

   "Because high speed isn't enough."

Just because a modem is labeled high speed doesn't mean it's high
performance, delivering the speed it claims. In order to achieve the
highest possible throughput, a modem needs to be flexible and responsive.
That's why Courier modems use ASL - Adaptive Speed Leveling. Only
U.S. Robotics has it. It means Couriers can change speed, increasing data
flow as line conditions improve. With ASL, your files are always
transferred as fast as conditions will allow.

"The modem that's right for you."

Finding the particular piece of equipment that best suits your data
communication needs is never easy. That's why U.S. Robotics offers 20
different Courier modems-so you can find the perfect fit.

   * Courier HST 16.8 - for high speed asymmetrical operation and
compatibility with the enormous installed base of HSTs.

   * Courier V.32 bis - for national and international compatibility and
compliance with the most advanced CCITT standards. Symmetric full
duplex operation provides lightning-fast two-way transfers.

   * Courier HST Dual Standard - when you need the most widely compatible
high speed modem. Operates in both HST and CCITT V.32 bis protocols.

Each Courier comes in stand-alone external, PC-bus internal, Rackmount,
and Total Control versions. If you need send/receive Group Ill FAX
capability, external and internal Couriers are offered in FAX versions as
well. Courier V.32 bis and Courier HST Dual Standard modems are also
available in PS/2 internal card versions.

   Courier HST

   * High Speeds: 16.8, 14.4, 12.0, 9.6, 7.2, and 4.8 Kbps in HST mode, with
back channels at 450 and 300 bps.

   * Maximum throughput: 57.6K bps- 24 times faster than a 2400 bps modem
     that doesn't compress data.

   * High speed compatibility: HST. You're compatible with the vast
     installed base of HST modems.

   * Asynchronous transmission.

   * Demand-driven direction control automatically switches the high speed
channel direction if data demand reverses.

   * Asymmetric full duplex operation. The 16.8K bps data channel and
450 bps back channel are highly efficient for one-way file transfers,
and still provide excellent response when you're working interactively.

   * Available in external and internal, with or without FAX, Rackmount and
     Total Control versions.

   Courier V.32 bis

   * High Speeds:  14.4, 12.0, 9.6, 7.2, and 4.8 Kbps.

   * Maximum throughput: 57.6K bps- 24 times faster than a 2400 bps modem
     that doesn't compress data.

   * High speed compatibility:  CCITT V.32 bis at 14.4, 12.0, 9.6, 7.2, and
     4.8 Kbps. CCITT V.32 at 9.6 and 4.8 Kbps

   * Fully compatible with all high speed national and international
     standards.

   * Symmetric full duplex operation gives you the efficiency you need for
two-way file transfers, and response is almost instantaneous when you're
     working interactively.

   * Asynchronous transmission at all speeds connects you to the wide world
     of PCs, minis, and terminals.

   * Synchronous transmission at speeds above 300 bps for communication with
     mainframes.

   * Available in external and internal, with or without FAX, PS/2 internal,
     Rackmount and Total Control versions.

   Courier HST Dual Standard

   * The Courier HST Dual Standard can operate in either HST or CCITT
V.32 bis protocols, increasing high speed compatibility and versatility.

   * Available in external and internal, with or without FAX, PS/2 internal,
     Rackmount and Total Control versions.

   Features

   * NEW! Remote Configuration allows a user to change a modem's setup from
another site, over the phone lines. A real time saver for Data center
managers and corporate help desks, where far-flung modems frequently
     need troubleshooting.

   * ASL (Adaptive Speed Leveling), up or down, gives you 100% error-free
transmission at the highest possible speed under prevailing line
conditions. Automatically selects the highest speed and error control
protocol supported by the remote unit. You get the maximum possible
throughput, and you don't have to worry about compatibility.

   * 9600 bps, CCITT Group III send and receive FAX capability with FAX
     software (on FAX models).

   * Nonvolatile Random Access Memory. Easily programmable memory keeps
     user-defined configuration.

   * Phone number storage gives you an auto-dial directory of frequently
     used numbers.

   * Auto Dial. Using the industry standard "AT" command set in asynchronous
mode, you can dial or program from your keyboard.

   * Auto Answer. You don't have to run for the phone or stand by a switch.

   * Automatic Redialing will redial up to 10 times, automatically.

   * On screen help gives you instant answers to most questions without
     opening the manual.

   * Externally accessible DIP switches. No disassembly required.

   * RS232 pins 2 and 3 (Send and Receive) are switch-reversible. Easy to use
with terminal, computer, or printer. (Desktop models only.)

   * Flow control allows fixed DTE rates up to 57.6K bps.

   * 12 LED front panel indicators (external models). You can clearly see
     what your modem is doing.

   * Built in speaker with volume control. You can hear call progress.
(Not on Rackmount and Total Control.)

   * Bottom label help summary. Particularly helpful for setting DIP
     switches. (Desktop models only.)

   * Complete diagnostic capability. Local analog, digital loopback, and
remote digital loopback self-testing make pinpointing a problem easy.

   * U.S./CCITT answer sequences. You're compatible with the current
     standard.
