I. Upgrading Family Origins 1.xx (DOS version)
to Family Origins 3.0 (DOS or Windows)

   A. BEFORE installing Family Origins 3.0, make a backup of your data,
then export your data to a GEDCOM file. See your Family Origins 1.0
User's Guide for instructions on exporting.

   B. Install Family Origins 3.0 and import the GEDCOM file you created
above following the instructions in the User's Guide.

II. Upgrading Family Origins 2.xx (DOS version)
or Family Origins for Windows to
Family Origins 3.0 (DOS or Windows)

   A. Install your new version of Family Origins. If you are installing the
Windows version, it is a good idea to install to a different directory
than your current DOS version. The default directory for the Windows
version is FOWIN and the default for the DOS version is FAMILY.

   B. Copy your data files to the directory where you installed the Family
Origins 3.0 and run the Convert program, CONVERT3.EXE.
For instance, if your previous version is on the C:\ drive in a
directory called FAMILY, and your new version is C:\FOWIN, then, at
      the C:\ prompt, type:

                         CD\FOWIN [press Enter]
                         COPY C:\FAMILY\*.0?? [press Enter]
                         CONVERT3 [press Enter]

If you installed the new version to the same directory as the old version,
change to that directory and type

                         CONVERT3 [press Enter]

   to convert your data.

   C. Start the program normally. See the User's Guide for detailed
information on starting and using the program

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

III. Using the Question Mark for Dates

If you use a question mark in the date field but don't put in a place,
Family Origins 3.0 will allocate space and memory for the information anyway.
This adds about 100 bytes to a person's record per event.

IV. Importing Data from Other Genealogy Programs

When Family Origins says it needs a file with the same name as the GEDCOM
file you are importing, except with a .G00 extension, that means the
GEDCOM file is not all there. Check the GEDCOM file with a text editor.
The last line of the file should be:

                        0 TRLR

If it isn't, then the data is not complete. The *.G00 file would be a
continuation file. If your GEDCOM file appears to contain all the data
(except for the 0 TRLR line), add that line to the end of the file and it
should import OK. If the data is not all there, you will need to
determine how to get the program that created the gedcom file to export
the complete file.
