If you are a user of Crosstalk for Windows 1.x, make sure you
backup the version 1.x files before installing Crosstalk for
Windows 2.01.  This includes phone book files (.XWP) and scripts
(.XWS).  Note that Crosstalk for Windows 1.x phone book files are
converted to the new version 2.01 format.  The newly formatted
file will replace the version 1.x file.


This file contains information you should know before you install
this version of Crosstalk for Windows.  It also provides installation
instructions and a complete list of the disk files provided with
Crosstalk for Windows version 2.01.

Requirements

    You must be running Windows version 3.1.

    You need approximately 3.5 MB of hard disk space to install 
    Crosstalk for Windows.  You need a minimum of 2 MB of RAM 
    to run Crosstalk for Windows.

Installation 

    To install Crosstalk for Windows, follow these steps:

    1.  Insert the diskette labeled Crosstalk for Windows Disk 1
	in any available disk drive on your PC.

    2.  Start Windows.

    3.  Choose Run from the Windows Program Manager File pull-down.

    4.  In the Command Line edit box, enter the diskette drive and
	the program name as follows:

	   drive:\setup

    5.  Follow the instructions on the screen.  After you finish 
	installing the software, the Setup program asks whether you 
	want to display the XTREADME.WRI file after exiting the program.  
	This file describes new features available in this version and 
	provides details about converting from previous versions.  It 
	also includes any last-minute changes that were not addressed 
	in the documentation.  

    6.  To start Crosstalk, double-click the Crosstalk icon.  The 
	program will load and start the configuration script.  
	You will be asked a series of questions concerning your 
	computer including modem type, serial port, and speed.  
	The last few screens of the configuration script
	provide an introduction to Crosstalk for Windows and 
	instructions to get you started.

Disk files

     When you install Crosstalk for Windows, the following files 
     are copied to your Crosstalk directory:

     XTALK.EXE    This file runs the Crosstalk for Windows program.

     *.DLL        Dynamic link library files.  These files provide 
		  support functions for the main Crosstalk program
		  (XTALK.EXE).
  
     *.HLP        Crosstalk for Windows online help files.

     *.MDM        Modem database files.  DCAXTALK.MDM contains the
		  standard modem defaults.  Do not change this file. 
		  CUSTOM.MDM contains information about customized
		  modem profiles defined by the user.

     *.PRE        These files contain information about the variables
		  used with each connection tool (Connection, Terminal,
		  and File Transfer).  These files are only used if you         
		  reference variables contained in these tools from a
		  script.

     *.XWP        Session profiles.  These files contain the name, telephone
		  number, and description of the host system, as well as 
		  connection and terminal emulation settings and the
		  file transfer protocol.  Crosstalk for Windows provides       
		  pre-defined profiles for many popular information services.

     *.XWK        Keyboard profiles.  Use these files to create a customized
		  keyboard or to change the location of the characters and
		  functions on your keyboard.

     *.XWQ        QuickPad profiles.  These files allow you to assign key
		  functions to an on-screen keypad.  You can use QuickPads
		  during a communications session with the host.  Crosstalk
		  provides QuickPads for many popular information services. 
		  You can modify these or create new QuickPads customized 
		  to your needs.

     *.XWS        Script source files.  Examples are provided for various
		  information services.

     *.XWC        Executable script files.  These are the compiled versions
		  of the source scripts.  Do not modify these files.

     XTALKCNV.EXE This program converts Procomm and Procomm Plus commands 
		  to Crosstalk for Windows session profiles.

     GI.INI       This file contains general settings for the CASL
		  script compiler.  Do not modify this file.

     NORMAL.XWP   This is the default session profile.  This profile contains 
		  the default settings you can use to create other session 
		  profiles.

     README.TXT   This file, which contains pre-installation and installation
		  information.  This is an ASCII text file.  

     XTREADME.WRI This is a Windows Write file which contains information about
		  this version of Crosstalk for Windows and how it differs from
		  previous versions.

     SETUP.EXE    The installation program for Crosstalk for Windows.

     XTALK.INI    This file contains general settings for your system.  
		  The Setup program creates this file after you
		  complete the installation program.  Do not modify
		  this file.  Note that Crosstalk also modifies your
		  WIN.INI system file, but does not change your 
		  CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files.

The following files are copied to the Windows\System directory:

    *.FON       Bit-mapped fonts provided for various emulations.  
 

Crosstalk also creates the following subdirectories:

     \FIL       This is the default directory used for file transfers.

     \XWP20     This directory contains pre-defined session profiles, 
		scripts, and QuickPads for you to use to connect to 
		common information services and bulletin boards.
