KODAK SHOEBOX Photo CD Image Manager
Version 1.0.2
RELEASE NOTES

This document contains important information that is
not included in the User's Guide or on-line Help.

************CHANGES SINCE RELEASE 1.0*****************

Support of the Kodak Photo CD Catalog disc format has
been updated.

KODAK SHOEBOX software now supports the Kodak
Professional Image Library (PIL30), which provides
automatic access to 100 on-line CDs, and management
of up to 2400 off-line CDs. The PIL30 consists of the
Kodak Jukebox 100 and Jukebox Manager software.

Zooming in or out of a Photo Window now changes the
window size.

Minimizing a Photo Window now shows the thumbnail for
its icon.

When printing contact sheets, the optimum page
placement of thumbnails is automatically chosen.

Potential loss of index entry helpers values has been
corrected.

In addition, there have been other minor changes and
functionality improvements.

************KNOWN PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS************

INSTALL

A line is written in the Btrieve section of WIN.INI
during installation. This may change the Btrieve
settings of other programs that use Btrieve and have
already written Btrieve settings to WIN.INI. The
original version of the WIN.INI file is backed up to
WIN.SHO.

COMPATIBILITY WITH NORTON DESKTOP SOFTWARE

There is an incompatibility with versions of Norton
Desktop for Windows earlier than version 2.0. Upgrade
to a newer version of Norton Desktop.

DEFINE FIELDS

Text Fields whose Data List contains values that start
with a double quote will encounter problems with Entry
Helpers. Use characters other than the double quote
for values in a Data List.

SAVE OBJECT AS

Although several thumbnails may be selected at once
before performing the Save Object As feature, only the
first selected object will be saved.

ADDING FILES TO A CATALOG

A General Protection Fault may be caused if corrupted
content files are added to a catalog. Any changes made
to the catalog since it was last saved may be lost.
While most damaged content files are handled correctly,
there are situations where corruption may not be
detected.

DISPLAYING IMAGES

Coloration problems may be experienced when a photo
window for an image that has its own palette is opened.
When such an image is opened, only the window that has
focus will appear correctly.

Images can be loaded using more colors than can be
displayed by the graphics card in the system. For
example, it is possible to open an image using
Millions of Colors on a system with 16-color VGA
display. This will cause on-screen coloration problems,
but the printed output will be high quality. This
scenario is allowed so that users with printers capable
of handling more colors may load and print images at
the highest colors available regardless of display
capabilities.

DEFAULT PRINTER

To choose a printer, you must change the Windows
Default Printer in the Windows Control Panel. See the
Microsoft Windows User Guide for more information.
See "Helpful Hints" below for more information about
printing.

FILE TYPE FIELD

The File Type field is used to differentiate between
PCD and non-PCD images. Thumbnails whose content files
are not PCD have the File Type field as DOS rather
than their actual content type (GIF, TIF, BMP, etc.).

SELECTING ENTRY HELPER VALUES

Chapter 6 of the User's Guide outlines how to key in
the first letter to select values in an entry helper
list. It is important to tab to the data list before
attempting to use the first letter of the desired
value. If the list has not gained the Windows focus
after being tabbed to, the current value in the field
edit box will be altered.

THUMBNAIL LABELS

If thumbnail labels are placed in odd places or are on
top of thumbnails, ensure that the correct and most
recent version of the display driver for the graphics
card in the system is being used.

***********************HELPFUL HINTS**********************

NUMBER OF FIELDS

Although it is possible to create hundreds of fields
in a catalog, maximum performance results are achieved
when fewer than 100 fields are used. As with most
database products, very large numbers of fields and
records may affect performance. To optimize
performance, all fields that may be searched should
be indexed.

PRINTING

When printing large images, it is recommended that the
Windows Print Manager not be used. Printing directly
to a printer avoids spooling and reduces the amount of
disk space required to print the image. To turn off
Print Manager for a given printer you must use the
Windows Control Panel. See the Windows User Guide or
on-line Help for more information.

As with many graphics- or image-based applications, it
is possible to attempt to print documents that may be
too large or complex to fit into the available RAM in
a printer. Each printer handles this situation
differently. On PostScript printers, a portion of the
output may appear on one page, with a following page
that states "Offending Command." On Hewlett Packard
LaserJet compatible printers, a portion of the output
may appear on a page while an error message will be
displayed on the printer. The complexity and size of
photo window printouts may be minimized by decreasing
the PCD Resolution or PCD Color in the Object Menu.

Color printer users are encouraged to load images at
the highest PCD color setting that their printer can
accommodate. Although screen display in this case may
show coloration problems, the printed output will be
high quality.

FOR OPTIMUM PRINTING ON THE HEWLETT PACKARD DESKJET 550C

If the 3.1 Printer Driver is being used, set Print Quality
to Presentation and in Options, set Dithering to Scatter.
If the 4.0 Printer Driver is being used, set Printout to
Color Photo, Print Quality to Presentation, and in Options,
set Halftoning to Scatter.

WORKING WITH KODAK PHOTO CD CATALOG DISCS

It is inadvisable to manually eject a Photo CD Catalog
disc while its contact sheet is open.
