With this release, we have completed implementation of all
features and the user interface is set. To help us meet the
quality and performance goals you expect in a Borland product, we
would like you to focus on these areas:

- Application development capability. With this field test, you
should be able to create large, robust applications.

- Design tools for creating queries, forms, menus, and reports.
You should be able to fully exercise these tools for creating
  your applications.

- dBASE language object extensions. All object properties and
methods have been implemented. Notice that the Form Designer
generates code that creates objects and specifies
  their properties and methods.

- Data integrity. All data manipulation should produce reliable
  results.

- Performance tuning is underway. We would like to know about
any area or program construct that seems behind on performance.

I. INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION
----------------------------------

System requirements:

  - DOS 3.1 or higher
  - Windows version 3.1
  - 6 MB RAM required, 8 MB recommended
  - 32 MB free disk space for a complete installation
  - 21 MB for minimum a installation

Follow these steps to install dBASE for Windows:

  1. Back up your hard drive. We recommend this step before
     installing any pre-release software.

  2. Insert disk 1 in a floppy drive. (The rest of these
instructions assume you are using drive A. Substitute your
     drive letter if necessary.)

  3. From Windows: Choose File|Run from the Program Manager and
     type:
                   A:INSTALL.EXE
                   choose OK.
     OR

From DOS: Make sure Windows is on your DOS path, and from
     the DOS prompt type:
                   WIN A:\INSTALL

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen, and insert floppy
disks as prompted. Note: The files are unpacked in memory,
there will be periods when there is no disk activity.
Please be patient and wait for the next prompt.

Configuration:

Borland Database Engine (IDAPI DLLs)

dBASE for Windows uses the Borland Database Engine to access
dBASE, Paradox and SQL tables. The configuration file for the
engine is IDAPI.CFG. The IDAPI.CFG file is maintained by the
IDAPICFG utility. **WARNING** Later field tests of other
Borland products using the Borland Database Engine may not work
with this version of the engine. To minimize conflicts, this
field test installs the engine in dBASE for Windows's \bin
directory. Also, local share must be TRUE to use both dBASE for
Windows and other Borland products that use ODAPI, the
previous version of the engine.

Changing Language Drivers:

International customers will need to change the default language
driver to the appropriate language driver as used with dBASE IV.
To do so:

1. Run the IDAPI Configuration Utility.
2. Choose the File|Open command.
3. Open the file IDAPI.CFG.
4. Select the Drivers tab, or select Pages|Drivers.
5. Select dBASE in the Driver Name box.
6. In the LANGDRIVER parameter field, enter the name of
the desired language driver as follows:

II. OVERVIEW OF COMPONENTS
---------------------------
Software components

Filelist.doc lists the files that make up this field test
release of dBASE for Windows. Once installed, you should see
icons for dBASE for Windows, the dBASE Debugger, this readme
file, and the Engine Configuration Utility.

Documentation Components

Documentation for this field test consists of written drafts of
several components, online Help, Language Reference update, and
Interactive Tutors.

 1. Printed Documentation

The Getting Started manual describes how to install and
configure dBASE for Windows and introduces the user interface
   and language features.

The User's Guide explains how to do most common tasks:
creating and working with tables, queries, and forms.

The Programmer's Guide is the detailed manual for developers
who want to build dBASE for Windows applications with the
   design tools and dBASE language.

The Using Crystal Reports for dBASE manual describes how you
can create reports, cross-tabs, and labels. It also
describes how to run these from the dBASE environment.

 2. Online Help

The online Help system provides reference material for the
dBASE language and task-oriented material for the user
   interface.

The Language Reference is online only for this Field Test
release. It is a detailed reference of all the dBASE language
   commands and functions.

 3. Documentation Update

LangRef.txt contains updated Language Reference information not
   included in the online Help.

 4. Interactive Tutors

Interactive Tutors teach database concepts, how to perform
common tasks, and how to work in the new user interface. You
can use your own data and get work done while learning. The
Tutors are designed to teach the task. This way, you don't
have to run a Tutor each time you want to do something.
Please note that the Tutors are not complete. You should run
them with sessions on and follow instructions closely.

Five Interactive Tutors are provided with this Field Test:
        Data Management Basics
        Opening and Viewing A Table
        Adding Records
        Creating a Table
        Designing a Single-table Query

Samples

The file, SAMPLES.TXT in the \samples directory, describes
the samples included and their usage.

Component Builder
With the Component Builder you can upgrade your existing dBASE
format, label, and report files for use with the dBASE for
Windows design tools. The Component Builder is in the
  \dBASEWIN\UTILITY directory.

III. Known Problems
--------------------
A second file, Readme2.txt, describes known problems with this
field test release.
