Access for Windows 3270 and 5250, Release 3.20

______________________________________________________________________________
Introduction These release notes provide important information that was
made available after the Access for Windows manuals were
printed. These release notes are applicable for both 3270
and 5250 versions of Access for Windows.

For a complete list of fixes and enhancements, see the
Access for Windows 3270 and 5250 Fixes and Enhancements
                 document.

______________________________________________________________________________
Highlights Listed below are new features introduced for this release of
                 Access for Windows:

                   * TCP/IP connection type for both 3270 and 5250

                   * AS/400 Support Router connection type for 5250

                   * 802.2 LLC connection type for 3270 supports both
                     Token-Ring and Ethernet

                   * Full screen support

                   * Help Line displays session status and command
                     information

Fixes The following fixes are included on the Access for Windows
                 diskettes:

                   * If you were using the Version 3 Eicon Technology Gateway
or Eicon's LAN router software with an X.25 connection,
you may have experienced problems during file transfers.
This was caused by segmentation problems with the SNA
                     Path Control.

To alleviate this problem, copy the file called
SNAPBIOS.ELM from the Access for Windows Installation
and Setup Disk #2 to the Eicon Technology Gateway or
                     Eicon LAN router directory.

                   * If you're using a Banyan VINES LAN and are having
problems opening eight or more Access sessions, copy the
file ECCLTSPP.CMD from the Access for Windows
Installation and Setup Disk #2 to your Version 3 Eicon
                     Technology Gateway client directory.

Notes The following section contains notes about using Access, as
                 well as known problems.

                   * There is a new option in the Transfer menu for Access
3270. When you select Receive from the Transfer menu,
the Truncate Spaces option appears if the Convert Record
Separator and the EBCDIC Translation options are
selected. The Truncate Spaces option lets you leave the
spaces in the host file as spaces instead of converting
them to carriage returns, as is usually done.

                   * Some program icons in the Access for Windows program
group have changed since the manuals were printed.

                 _____________________________________________________________
                 Installing Access

                   * Before you install Access, check that the entry
device=vehllapi.386 in the SYSTEM.INI file does not
specify a path for the vehllapi.386 file. If so, remove
the path. This is because if the Access Setup program
detects that the device=vehllapi.386 statement exists,
it will not update this statement. This causes problems
if Access is installed in a new directory.

                   * Do not install Access Version 3.14 after you install
Access Version 3.20. This creates incorrect Access
directory statements in the WIN.INI file.

                   * If you want to run Access 3270 and 5250 simultaneously,
we recommend that both Access emulations be the same
version (3.14 or 3.20) in a combined desktop.

                   * If you delete Access or cancel the installation, you
must restart Windows before you reintall Access. You must
also remove the Access directory statements in the
WIN.INI file before you reinstall Access. The Access
                     statements look similar to this:

                          [ACCESS]

                          ExecPath=C:\ACCESSW
                          UserPath=C:\ACCESSW
                          SessionPath=C:\ACCESSW\SESSION

                 ________________________
                 Multi-user Installations

                   * When you're installing private Access directories for
LAN users in a multi-user installation, this message may
appear if you don't have read and write access to the
network server on which the shared Access directory is
                     installed:

"Cannot access Windows SYSTEM directory. Please see
                            release notes for further information."

If this happens, complete the installation process and
then copy these files from the Windows \SYSTEM directory
to each of the LAN users' private Access directories:

                     - CPALETTE.DLL
                     - CPBITMAP.DLL
                     - VPALETTE.VBX

                 ____________________________________________
Installing with the Eicon Technology Gateway

                  * Versions of Access previous to this one included the
Eicon Technology Gateway Workstation Support software. In
other words, files such as NABIOS.EXE, ECUSE.EXE, etc.
were installed into the Access ExecPath directory.

This version of Access (3.20) does NOT include these
files. You will have to use the Eicon Technology Gateway
diskettes to install these files. For example, with the
Version 2 (V2R2) Gateway, you would use the DOS Work-
station disk to install the Workstation software. With
the Version 3 (V3R1) Gateway, you would use the LAN
Workstation installation (from Disk #1) to install the
                    Workstation software.

The Eicon Gateway Workstation software can be installed
anywhere you choose, not necessarily in the Access Exec-
Path directory. When you run the Communications Setup
program for the Eicon Technology Gateway connection type,
you specify where the Gateway software is installed in the
"EG Support Directory" text box. Then in the "Select
Eicon Gateway Support Directory" text box, choose the
Gateway version you have (V2 or V3) and select the
appropriate .EXE file (ECUSE.EXE for a V2 Gateway or
ECLAN.EXE for a V3 Gateway). This process is described in
detail in Chapter Four of your Access for Windows Install-
ation and Setup Guide (for both 3270 and 5250 emulations).

After you exit the Communications Setup program, an
                    appropriate V2 or V3 Gateway-based batch file (AFWCOM.BAT)
will be created automatically for you in the Access
                    ExecPath directory.

                 _________________________________________
                 Turkish and Czech Installations

                   * If you're installing Access under a Turkish or Czech
version of Windows, the Access Setup program automatic-
ally detects this and copies all the required keyboard
and fonts files for that language.

To make sure that Windows uses the same language as
Access, start Windows and double-click on the
International icon in the Control Panel. See that the
appropriate language (Turkish or Czech) is selected in
the Language text box. This selection appears in the
"sLanguage statement in the [Intl] section of the
                     WIN.INI file.

                 _____________________________________________________________
                 Access Sessions

                   * The following error message may occur when closing an
                     Access session:

"Unable to properly close session. Further
                           communication errors may occur."

When closing a session, Access will wait for 10 seconds.
If the time runs out before receiving a confirmation
from the host computer, then this error message appears.
This is because the connection to your host may have
failed or the communication is too slow. Ask your system
administrator for assistance if this problem persists.

                   * If you save an Access workspace session file (*.acw
file) maximized or in Full Screen mode, it will appear
this size the next time you open it only if you run
it from the File Properties command line. This is
because the size of the existing Access workspace
determines the size of workspace session files
                     opened within it.

                   * When Access is in Full Screen mode and you press the Alt
key to display the menu bar, the menu bar appears and
the File menu is highlighted by default. However, the
mouse doesn't respond when you try to select an item
from the File menu. This problem occurs when you
maximize any application in Windows and try to select an
item from the File menu. To solve this problem, slide
the mouse cursor to another menu first and then back to
the item you want in the File menu.

                   * If you are using a 1024 x 1024 resolution monitor and
have an Access session in Full Screen mode, the Help
Line appears in the middle of the screen. To avoid this,
deselect the Help Line command in the Help menu.

                   * The Print Preview mode of a printer session gives you
the choice to output or discard an entire page that is
received. The OK and Discard buttons are enabled only
when a full page is received. You should cancel
Print Preview and set the Timeout when you are
producing output that is less than a full page.
The print job is not sent to the printer if previewed
output is less than one page.

                 _____________________________________________________________
                 Customization Utility

                   * In the Customization Utility, the maximum number of
characters for the Max. Character for Softkey Name
setting should be 20, not 40 as stated in the manuals.
This setting is in the Desktop category.

                   * The APA Graphics setting in the Customization Utility is
now Disabled by default, not Enabled as stated in the
manuals. This setting is in the Host Graphics category.

                   * Three settings have been added to the Customization
Utility since the manuals were printed:

                     - In the Display Session category, the Printer Fonts for
Print Screen setting is new. This setting lets you use
printer and system fonts (the default), or only printer
fonts. This is useful if you're using a dot matrix
printer and want to use only printer fonts so that your
printing process is not slowed down. See the online
                       help for more information.

                     - In the Performance Tuning category, the Macro Timeout
setting is new. This is the default timeout for macro
Wait commands (Wait, Wait Response, and
Wait For <string> during macro playback. This setting
also determines the timeout value when recording a
Wait Response command and when an internal Wait
Response is issued during macro execution.
The setting is in half seconds, the default value
being 15 (7.5 seconds). See the online help
                       for more information.

                     - In the Printer Session category, the Auto Line Wrap
setting is new. This setting determines whether or not
your print job will use carriage return line feeds
created by Access. If this setting is On (the default),
Access generates carriage return line feeds for your
your print job according the settings of Printer Column
Width. If this setting is Off, Access will only output
carriage return line feeds received in data stream.

NOTE: The Printer Column Width setting is only
available if the Auto Line Wrap setting is On (the
                       default).

                 _____________________________________________________________
                 Macros

                   * If you want to modify a macro file (*.ACM files) with
any text editor, you must first save the macro file in
Access using the File Save As command with the "Text
File" option selected. By default, Access macro files
are in binary format. The Text File option saves the
file in normal ASCII characters so that it can be edited
using any text editor. If you want the macro file to be
in binary format again, use the File Save As command to
save the macro file, but deselect the Text File option.

                   * If you're editing a macro file, you must add a SwitchTo
statement with the appropriate session name after a
Close statement. This is because the macro does not
return to the first session name you specified in the
macro file: you must define its destination.

                 Eicon Transparent Printer Driver

                   * With the Eicon Transparent Printer driver, you can create
or modify printer translation tables from within Access by
selecting the File Printer Setup command. However, when
you open a printer translation table file (an .APT file)
in the Printer Setup dialog box, the table cells may appear
                     blank.

As a solution, you can run the Printer Setup program
from Windows instead. To do this, exit Access, open the
Control Panel in Windows, and double-click on the
Printers icon. Select the Eicon Transparent Printer
driver and then click on the Setup button to create or
                     modify a translation table.

                   * The Page Setup options available with the Eicon
Transparent Printer driver are not discussed in the
manuals. To use these options, start a printer session in
Access using the Eicon Transparent Printer driver and
select the Page Setup command from the Options menu. The
options in the Transparent Printer Page Setup dialog box
let you set initial values for your print job's Page Size,
Line Density, and Character Density. Even though these
options may be overwritten by print codes from the host,
your printer uses these options as initial values.

                     __________________________________
                     Pass Through Printer Support Option

Also available in the Transparent Printer Page Setup dialog
box is the Pass Through Printer Support option. This option
lets you print a job from the host directly to your printer
using only the host's printer codes. To use this option,
                     follow these steps:

                     1. Install the Eicon Transparent Printer driver as
described in Appendix B in the Access for Windows
Installation and Setup Guide (for both 3270 and 5250).

                     2. Start a printer session in Access using the Eicon
                        Transparent Printer driver.

                     3. Select the Page Setup command from the Options menu.

                     4. Select the "Enable Pass Through Support" option.

When you select this option, all other options in the
Transparent Printer Page Setup dialog box are disabled
since they are not used by your printer.

                 AS/400 File Transfer

                   * When you receive a large file (more than 3 MB) from the
AS/400, the following message may appear:

"Transfer is being processed ... please wait."

Even though the status meter shows that the transfer is
100% complete, it will continue until the file has been
                     received completely.

                   * If you receive a file that is too large for your hard
disk, no warning will be issued that this is the case.
The transfer will continue normally, but the file that is
created on your hard disk will be empty (0 bytes).

                   * This error message may appear while you're trying to
                     perform an AS/400 file transfer:

                          "Insufficient memory to run Windows."

If this happens, decrease the number of buffers
specified in the PCSWIN/B=n statement in the AFWCOM.BAT
file. For more information on this, see the
Communications Setup Online Help for the AS/400 PC
                     Support Router connection type.

                 DCA/Microsoft Comm Server Connections

                   * You cannot use the Window New command for an Access
session using the DCA/Microsoft Communications Server
connection type. Use the File New command instead to
create a new session with this connection type.

                   * You can not have simultaneous Access for Windows 3270
and 5250 connections with Comm Server on the same
machine. That is, you cannot use the DCA/Microsoft Comm
Server connection type for 3270 and the Comm Server
Router for 5250 on the same machine. This is because the
router provided by Microsoft is a DOS program that
requires the DOS Comm Server NAP (Network Access Point),
and Access 3270 is using a Windows interface called FMI
that requires the Windows NAP. The problem is that the
DOS and Windows NAPs can not run simultaneously. This
problem will be fixed in a future release.

                 _____________________________________________________________
                 TCP/IP Connections

                   * If you're using the TCP/IP Connection type in Access and
are using DNS (Domain Name Server), there are two ways
you can select a Host Name:

                     - Edit the HOSTS file to add the Host name, its IP
address, and its TCP/IP port number. Then run the
Communications Setup program and select this Host Name.
In the File New box, select this Host Name from the
                       Host Name text box.

                       OR

                     - In the File New dialog box, type in the host name
(without the IP address and TCP/IP port number) in the
Host Name text box each time you want to make a
connection. If the Host name is not found locally from
the HOSTS file, Access will try to find information on
the DNS node (if there is one). If the desired host
name is not configured there, the connection will fail.

                   * When you're attempting to establish a TCP/IP host
connection for an Access session, you may receive this
message if your host connection is slow:

"Attempt to connect has timed out."

In this case, use the File Reconnect command to
                     reattempt the connection.

                   * If you're creating an Access session (File New) with the
TCP/IP connection type, you may receive this error

                          "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL."

Copy the WINSOCK.DLL file to the Access root directory,
or make sure that the WINSOCK directory is in the path
                     statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

                 AS/400 PC Support Router Connections

                   * If you're creating an Access session (File New) with the
AS/400 PC Support Router connection and using the
Workstation Support router, this error message may
                     appear:

                          "Allocation error, no retry."

This means that there are not enough conversations for
the number of sessions you have defined (display,
printer or other). Run the Communications Setup
program for this connection type and increase the number
of Conversations in the Connection Profile dialog box
for the Workstation Support router. For more details,
see Chapter Six in the Access for Windows 5250
                     Installation and Setup Guide.

                 802.2 LLC Connections

                   * With the 802.2 LLC connection type and a direct
Token-Ring connection, you cannot use zero as the Port
number if you have a Version 3 Eicon Technology Gateway.
Instead, use Port 1 for a connection.

                 _____________________________________________________________
                 NetWare for SAA Connections

                   * You may sometimes experience a "black screen" failure if
you have NetWare for SAA sessions and then use
the File New dialog box to create another NetWare for
SAA session. If this happens, contact Eicon Technology
for the most current fix from Microsoft.

                   * If you're using the NetWare for SAA connection type and
have problems with multiple sessions or reconnecting
sessions, you need the following files:

                     - The ODI drivers supplied by Novell in the DOSUP7.ZIP
                       file.

                     - The VIPX.386 and NWIPXSPX.DLL file in the WINUP7.ZIP
file also available from Novell. The VIPX.386 file must
be copied to your Windows \SYSTEM directory and the
NWIPXSPX.DLL file copied to your Windows directory.

                     - Before starting Access, make sure that IPXODI is loaded
and the memory used by the Network Interface Card is
excluded (in the SYSTEM.INI and CONFIG.SYS files if
                       EMM386 is used).

                   * To create a new Access session with the NetWare for SAA
connection type, you must have the IPXODI driver
(Version 1.2 or later) loaded, the NWIPXSPX.DLL file
in your Windows directory, and the following lines in
the [386Enh] section of the Windows SYSTEM.INI file:

                          network=*vnetbios,vipx.386,vnetware.386
                          EMMExclude=XXXX-YYYY

where XXXX-YYYY specifies the memory range used by your
                     Network Interface Card.

                   * If the File New dialog box disappears when you select
the NetWare for SAA connection type, it may be that
Access cannot find an SAA server (the SAA server may
be down temporarily). You may also have problems using
other connection types if the NetWare for SAA connection
type was the last one used in Access. To use the other
connection types, deactivate the NetWare for SAA driver
in the Communications Setup program. When the SAA server
is up again, you can reactivate the NetWare for SAA
                     driver.

                 Eicon Technology Gateway Connections

                   * If you have an Eicon Technology DSP Gateway connection,
the Help Line will display that you have a connection to
the host before one is established. To properly
establish a connection, press the Reset key and then
                     Ctrl-F7.

                   * The Eicon Technology DSP or DSI Gateway connections do
not work with a Banyan VINES LAN.

                   * If you're running EHLLAPI from a DOS box on a
stand-alone Eicon Technology Gateway, you must add the
VNABIOS.386 line to the [386Enh] section of the
SYSTEM.INI file in your Windows directory. For example:

                          device=vnabios.386

                 _____________________________________________________________
                 NetBIOS LANs

If you're using the Eicon Technology Gateway or the IBM
Emulation Gateway on a NetBIOS LAN, make sure to do the
                 following:

                   * In the [386Enh] section of the Windows SYSTEM.INI file,
include an EMMExclude statement specifying the range
required by the Network Interface Card. For example,
your statement could look like this:

                          EMMExclude=CC00-DFFF

                   * When using Access with a NetBIOS connection, make sure
to use the same type of NetBIOS driver as the one used
on the Gateway (that is, both Novell drivers or both IBM
                     drivers).

                 _____________________________________________________________
                 APA Graphics

                   * APA Graphics is now Disabled by default, not Enabled as
stated in the manuals. To enable it, choose the APA
Graphics setting in the Customization Utility (in the
Host Graphics category) and select the Enabled option.

                   * Screen repainting may be slow when host data is being
transferred. This problem will be fixed in the next
                     release.

                   * Screen flickering may occur when you receive graphics
data. This problem will be fixed in the next release.

                   * APA Graphics may display broken vertical lines. This
problem will be fixed in the next release.

                   * You may experience problems with the graphics layer
appearing on top of the text layer when viewing the APA
graphics with another application. This problem will be
                     fixed in the next release.

                   * With APA graphics, you may have problems with the
graphic cursor positioning when using some host
applications. To fix the problem, use the Customization
Utility to change the APA Graphics Cell Width and the
APA Graphics Cell Height settings (in the Host Graphics
category). The settings should be as follows:

APA Graphics Cell Width = 9
APA Graphics Cell Height = 16

                   * The Host APA Graphics SAS version 6.06 causes the pixel
location problem described below. To avoid this, upgrade
your host application to version 6.07 or 6.08.

The pixel location chosen by the IBM emulated cursor in
an APA Access session varies with respect to the
proximity of the center of the screen. The further from
the center, the more possible error between actual pixel
coordination to pixel coordination shown on the screen.

                   * Large graphics may not always be completely redrawn on
your screen. If this happens, you will have to increase
the memory buffer size. You can do this by adding a
switch in the [VECGRAPH] section of the ACCESS.INI file
(this file should be in your Access root directory). The
switch statement should look like this:

                          [VECGRAPH]
                          MemoryLevel = n

where n is the number of 64K-byte blocks used by APA
graphics as the buffer. By default, the memory size used
                     should be 2 (2 x 64K, or 128K). Increase the number of
blocks if you have problems with large graphics not
                     being fully redrawn.
