LANDesk Virus Protect offers three levels of virus protection to match the needs
of different systems.

Level 1 Protection
The NLM Real Time scan and Virus Scan for DOS offer the most basic level of
virus protection. The Real Time scan protects the file server and prevents the
spread of viruses to other workstations by scanning incoming and outgoing files.
VSCAND.EXE scans and cleans memory and local drives each time users
bootup their computers or login to the network. You don't need a workstation
TSR for level one protection.

Level 2 Protection
Add VPRule, a 14k rules-based TSR at the workstation, that watches for all
known and unknown virus activity in real time. This TSR protects workstations
from virus entry points such as disk drives and modems. Upon installation,
VPRule backs up the boot sector of the local hard drive so that it can be
restored in the case of an emergency. If you only want to load one TSR, load
VPRule.

Level 3 Protection
Add PCScan, a pattern-based 8.5K TSR that scans in real time at the workstation.
PCScan prevents known viruses from becoming active by denying access
to infected files. Unlike VPRule, PCScan cannot identify unknown viruses.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Home Computer Protection
You can have your network users make disks to take home in one of two ways.
The first way copies the workstation files to users hard disks at work and the
second copies the files straight to a floppy disk. See chapter 4 of the manual
for details on DOCKINST.EXE and home computer protection.

Have users run DOCKINST.EXE with the /D=(drive letter) parameter from the
LANDesk Virus Protect home directory. The drive letter should be the drive
with a floppy disk in it. DOCKINST copies the workstation files to the disk.
When users take the disk home, they run SETUP.BAT from the floppy.
SETUP.BAT copies the files to their hard disks and makes any necessary
changes to their AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

If you run DOCKINST.EXE from the login script without any parameters, users
can choose whether or not they want to install the workstation files to their
hard disks. If the user chooses not to install the files, they won't be asked
to install them for 30 days. However, if the user decides later that they
don't want to wait 30 days to install the files, they can install the files
by running DOCKINST from the LANDesk Virus Protect directory with the /F option.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Virus Notification Messages and the NLM's Real Time Scan
If the offending user is part of a group on the notification list, they will
get the message sent to the entire group and not get the customized message
from the NLM targeted at the offending user, it will be masked out by the
message sent to the notification group. Note that the default messages for
the groups on the notification list and the offending users are the same.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Running an On-Demand Scan While the Real Time Scan is On
If you scan your server volumes with either the Manual scan, Virus Scan, or
Virus Scan for DOS while the Real Time scan is running, the Real Time scan
will take action on any infected files as soon as they are accessed by the
on-demand scan. You will see messages about any infected files originating
from the Real Time scan rather than the on-demand scan.

Unload PCScan TSR before running VSCAND. PCScan can't clean viruses but
it will intercept viruses, preventing VSCAND from cleaning them. PCScan will
intercept file open calls. VSCAND must open the file to check for viruses. If
a file is infected, VSCAND will get an error opening the file.
Use PCScan /R at a DOS prompt to remove the TSR from memory.

Typing Errors in the LANDesk Virus Protect Manual
Page 59 The line: WRITE "OK$TSRS.EXE did not find space to load TSRs."
Should read: WRITE "OK4TSRS.EXE did not find space to load TSRs."

Restoring Hard Drive with VPRule
Whenever you find a boot sector virus, turn off your computer and then boot
from a clean floppy.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Additions to the section on VPRule trap in chapter 4 of the manual.
The first time you run VPRule from your AUTOEXEC.BAT, it makes a copy of
your hard disks boot sector and partition table on the hard drive. It also
copies this information to a floppy disk. This copy is called a rescue disk.

When you use VPRule to make a rescue disk, VPRule also makes a copy of your
hard disk that it stores inside itself. If your hard disk has been damaged
by a boot sector virus, but you can still access it, VPRule will restore the
hard disk with the copy it made of it the first time it was run. If you can
still access the hard drive, you need only to run VPRULE from the infected
drive and VPRule will restore the boot sector and partition area from the
copy it made for itself.

If you have a boot sector virus that trashes your hard disk, you can restore
it with VPRescue if you have previously made a rescue disk with VPRule trap.
A trashed hard disk means that you cannot access C:.
1. Take the rescue disk you previously made on the machine with the trashed
hard disk.
2. Go to another workstation connected to the network.
3. Go to the LANDesk Virus Protect home directory.
4. Copy VPRESCUE.EXE to the rescue disk.
5. Take the disk back to the machine with the trashed hard disk.
6. Turn the machine off and reboot from a clean write-protected floppy.
7. Insert the rescue disk from step 4 into your floppy drive.
8. Run VPRescue to restore the hard disk boot sector/partition table from
the rescue disk.
9. Scan your hard disk with VSCAND to make sure there are no viruses on your
hard drive.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VPRule does not catch the test virus, TESTVIR.COM because TESTVIR.COM
doesn't exhibit virus-like activity.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changing the LANDesk Virus Protect home directory
If you have changed the home directory for LANDesk Virus protect and you
are trying to load the LANDesk Virus Protect NLM and you get the messages,
"Cannot find pattern file or pattern file is corrupt. Please complete the
installation" you need to run LPWP from your workstation. At the DOS prompt
type:

LPWP LPROTECT.NLM F:\VPROTECT

F: should be the drive letter mapped to the LANDesk Virus Protect home directory.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The NLM Unload Password can only be Alpha-Numeric, it cannot contain
symbols e.g. ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) etc.
