PUBLISH-IT! for WINDOWS README File
===================================
This file contains information that was not available when the
Publish-It! for Windows User's Manual was printed.

Importing Text
==============
If you see a "Publish It! could not interpret file format" message
when trying to import a text file, it may be that Publish It! does
not support files from the latest version of your word processing
program. Here are a few ways in which you may be able to work
around this problem:

1) Save your file in Rich Text Format (.RTF). Most word processors
   allow you to save or export your file to RTF. Saving a file in
   RTF will allow Publish It! to import all of the text file's
   formatting including fonts, type sizes, and paragraph styles.
2) Save your text file to a format written by a previous version
   of your word processor. For example, Word for Windows 6 lets
   you save files in Word for Windows 1 and 2 format.
3) Save your file as ASCII text.

PostScript printers
===================
Frame tints, object fill styles, and PowerText fill styles will always
print as opaque, regardless of your chosen transparency setting. This is a
limitation of PostScript printers. To overcome this problem, use the Frame
menu's Bring to Front and Send to Back commands to position your frames.

Using compressed and expanded fonts
===================================
Printer drivers for the HP LaserJet IV (versions 1.12 and 1.18) and the
DeskJet 1200C (version 2.20) cannot print widths correctly when using
TrueType or ATM soft fonts. That is, when you compress or expand the width
of a font, it will be printed at 100%, regardless of your width settings
within Publish It!'s Font and Size dialog.

Language formatting
===================
When importing an RTF or Word for Windows file into Publish It! 4, any
language formatting used in the file will be recognized by Publish It!.

If the text is formatted in a language that you do not have a Publish It!
language dictionary for (e.g. French), that text will be skipped over when
spell-checked. A message will inform you that the spell-checker has skipped
a portion of your text.

Note: If the file you are importing was created in Word for Windows, the
Language option on the Story Status dialog will not be set to any language.
Word for Windows only attributes language formatting to paragraph styles or
selected blocks of text.

Bullets
=======
RTF files do not support bulleted paragraphs. So, if you export a Publish It!
file as RTF and try to re-import it, your bullets will be lost.

Color
=====
If you export a Publish It! file containing colored text as RTF and then load
it into Word for Windows, your color formatting may not be recognized.

Object Linking and Embedding: 256-color mode
============================================
When linking or embedding objects into Publish It!, the colors displayed on
screen in the linked or embedded object may not be the same as those used in
the source document when running Windows in 256-color mode. This is because
all Windows applications do not use the same color palette. However, your
object will print correctly (that is, using the colors you see in the source
document).

Object Linking and Embedding: Microsoft Excel (version 3 or 4)
==============================================================
When linking an object into Publish It!, the object must be saved before a link
can be established. However, if you are using Microsoft Excel (version 3 or 4),
the Paste Link command in Publish It!'s Edit menu may be enabled even if the
source document has not been saved. Note: selecting Paste Link in this
situation will paste the object, but a link will not be created.

Object Linking and Embedding: Updating links
============================================
Linked objects are updated automatically in Publish It! (i.e. any edits made
to the object are reflected in the source document and all links pointing to
it). If you do not want a link in a particular document to be updated you
must change the linked object to an embedded object by following the steps
below:

1) In Publish It!, double-click on the linked object that you need to change.
   The server application opens with the objects displayed.
2) In the server application, select the object and copy it to the Clipboard.
   (This is usually done using the Copy command in the Edit menu).
3) Return to Publish It!, either by clicking on the Publish It! window or by
   pressing ALT-TAB.
4) In the list of OLE objects in the Library, double-click on the name of the
   linked object. The Object Status dialog is displayed. Click on Remove to
   remove the linked object from your document.
5) Select the frame that contained the linked object, then select Paste
   Special from the Edit menu. The Paste Special dialog is displayed.
6) From the Data Type box, select the correct format of the object that you
   wish to embed. For example, if the object has been created in Paintbrush,
   the format you require is Paintbrush Picture Object.
7) Click on Paste to embed the object into your document.

When you embed an object into Publish It!, a copy of the object file is made
and stored within your document: the original file is not altered in any way
and remains available for future use.

We hope you enjoy working with Publish It! for Windows.
