The international lnternet Association is handing out free lntemet access to
all interested parties. Beginning Nov. 1. computer users in the U.S. will be
allowed to use the lnternet free of charge. The lnternet, which is funded by
the U.S. Government, will require an account ID code which you can obtain from
the International lnternet Association, Suite 852, 2020 Pennsylvania Ave.,
N.W., Washington, D.C. 20006 -- or call (202) 387-5445 and pray the call gets
answered (They have a backlog of requests) or better yet, FAX your request to
them at (202) 387-5446. With the backlog, expect your new account ID codes
in about six weeks. And happy computering, fellow journalists!

No, it's no joke or prank. The International lnternet Association's purpose is
to promote the free flow of information and ideas without regard to position
or affiliation. With this spirit in mind, the IIA received funding to provide
unlimited free access to the lnternet for uses in the domestic U.S. Anyone
with a modem will be able to access the lnternet free by dialing into IIA's
master node in Washington, DC. in fact, I've already called and requested my
access ID. Then I interviewed Max Robbins, the executive director of IIA, for
a a story about the free access. They'll have 50 lines open beginning Nov. 1,
with the ability to double that within three days, and 200 lines in the near
future if needed. There will also be 800 numbers available, but you'll have
to pay 0.20 per minute for access on those lines. So call today -- and if
you're a reporter wanting to do a story, they'll even let you on right now to
explore around. Trust me about all this, I'm a reporter who checked it out
for myself!

My article will appear Monday, Nov. 8, in the Business Monday section of the
Fort Myers News-Press. However, since we re a Gannett newspaper, I suspect
such a story will be filed to Gannett News Service, and gosh knows which of
our 82 dailies would pick it up, etc. However, I have since learned that the
Associated Press ran a small article on its business desk, and the San
Antonio Express-itiews (Oct. 27) and Houston Chronicle (date unknown) have
already run articles. The 800-lines are only for those who choose to be
billed in this manner. Otherwise, you call in on their Washington, D.C. lines
and pay what ever your local telephone company chargres you for for long
distance. For some, its a bargain such as us here in Fort Myers who don't have
cheap lnternet access. For others, such as yourself, you're able to gain
inexpensive and unlimited access. So you just have to weigh both sides But
getting an account number is free, and they're not qoing to charge you to
dial in unless you Use the 800-lines. Any other questions, feel free to ask.

I have called them, and it is for real. If you call by voice, you
have to leave your name and phone # on a machine so they can get back
to you. They say it will take about three weeks to return the call.
Then it will be some time after to get set up.
