1. About Vertigo ActiveBooks
***************************************************************
An ActiveBook is an electronic book in which the examples,
illustrations and exhibits literally come to life with the
active presence of the author. Readers can modify information
in the book to their specific needs while the author guides
them each step of the way. The ActiveBook is the first
electronic book to harness the power of the computer to compute
at the same time it delivers meaningful content. ActiveBooks
have the book "look" and all the trappings: electronic
navigation, annotation, indexing, page marking, and an
interactive glossary. ActiveBooks also provide features well
beyond other electronic books: Sophisticated software that
provides the power to do advanced calculations and analysis,
and: Built in intelligence to electronically bring the
knowledge of an author to bear to solve a problem or to catch
an error. The ActiveBook provides the best of both the book
and the software worlds by combining the knowledge in books
with the power of the personal computer.

2. Help
***************************************************************
The ActiveBook help system provides full instructions on how to
use the ActiveBook. Use the ? icon to get context sensitive
help for the ActiveBook. The icon is located in the lower left
corner of the book. Clicking on the icon opens the ActiveBook
help program. You can access ActiveBook help in one of two
ways:
1. Click on the Help Icon in the lower left corner of
   your ActiveBook.
2. Press the F1 key. If you are having trouble running
or using the product then further information is
available in the Troubleshooting Section of the help
program and in this README.TXT file.
***************************************************************
3. INSTALLATION TIPS
***************************************************************

Be sure you have at least 5MB of free space on the drive you
will be installing the ActiveBook.

Before you install your ActiveBook you may want to check your
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS. The CONFIG.SYS should have FILES
and BUFFERS = 40 or greater. Your AUTOEXEC.BAT should have a
line for setting the TEMP environment variable to a drive with
at least 2MB of free disk space. The entry would look like SET
TEMP=C:\TEMP.This assumes you have a directory called TEMP.
Refer to your DOS manual for more information on setting
environment variables and editing your AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS.

If you press SKIP during the installation when prompted for a
GROUP name for the ActiveBook or are running PC TOOLS ON TOP
then you will need to create your program group and icons
manually. If you wish to place the icons in an existing group
then do not create a new group. If you want to place the
program icons in an ActiveBook group then select NEW from the
PROGRAM MANAGER FILE menu. Select PROGRAM GROUP in the net
dialog box. Enter a group name/description and a file name
for the group. Once the group is created it will be opened
within Program Manager. Now you can create a program icon for
the ActiveBook. Select PROGRAM MANAGER FILE NEW again. This time
select PROGRAM ITEM in the next dialog box. A dialog box will be
displayed for entering the PROPERTIES for the icon you are
creating. Enter the name of your ActiveBook on the DESCRIPTION
line.
For the Command Line specify: [BOOKNAME].EXE
For the Working Directory specify:
[DRIVE]:\[ACTIVEBOOK Path...]\[BOOKNAME]
where the BOOKNAME is the simply the 8 character filename,
without extension, of the book executable installed in the
ACTIVEBOOK directory specified at install time.
The default ACTIVEBOOK directory, overridable at install time,
is [DRIVE]:\ACTIVEBOOK\[BOOKNAME]

Refer to your Window's manual for more information on creating
program icons.

This section is designed to help you through problems you may
encounter while running or using your ActiveBook. It is
organized by the type of problem you may encounter. Please
read through this section before calling Customer Support, as
many questions can be answered by the information contained
here.

If you cannot solve your problem using this information, don't
hesitate to call our Customer Support Line.

=>   ActiveBook Will Not Start

Error: File Write Error
There are two possible reasons you might see this error message:
1. No Disk Space: This message could indicate that not enough
free disk space exists to open the ActiveBook. The ActiveBook
creates a temporary file while it is running, which requires
free disk space (the amount required depends on which
ActiveBook you are reading). To solve this problem, you must
free up some disk space and try again.

2. Running Off CD ROM: Another possibility is that the
ActiveBook is attempting to write information to a write
protected disk drive or CD ROM. This occurs if you are running
the ActiveBook off a network or CD ROM and your ACTIVEBK.INI
file is corrupted or missing. To solve this problem, reinstall
the ActiveBook. Reinstalling will cause a new copy of
ACTIVEBK.INI to be placed in your Windows directory, and should
fix the problem.

Error: Cannot Load Resources
This message (when displayed before the ActiveBook starts),
indicates that the ActiveBook cannot fit in memory because too
many other programs are running. To solve this problem, close
some other applications and try again.

Error: Writeback File Does Not Match Book File
All user specified data, (i.e. Bookmarks, Notes, ActiveInformation
values etc.) in the book are stored in a special file
on your disk called a WriteBack file. This file has the
same name as the book file, but has a different extension
(.VWB). If your Writeback file becomes corrupted as a result of
some disk error, this message will appear. To resolve this problem,
restore from backup or delete the Writeback file.
Note that by deleting the Writeback file, all book specific user
specified data will be permanently lost.

Error: Path Requested Does Not Exist
You will receive this error any time the ActiveBook looks for a
file on disk and the path it was given is not available. This
may happen at startup or later, such as when you attempt to
view a video. There are two probable causes of this error:
1. CD ROM Not In Drive: If you run some or all of the
ActiveBook from a CD ROM, and the ActiveBook's CD is not in
the drive, you will see this error message. To solve this
problem, place the correct CD into the drive and try again.
2. ACTIVEBK.INI is Corrupted: The ACTIVEBK.INI file specifies
where the ActiveBook looks for files it uses while it runs.
If this file becomes corrupted or is accidentally deleted, you
may see this message. Reinstalling Windows could cause this
file to be deleted. To solve this problem, restore an old copy
of ACTIVEBK.INI, or rerun the installation program, which will
create a new copy of ACTIVEBK.INI.

=>   Book Display Problems

Every effort has been made to maintain the ActiveBook
appearance on varying system configurations. However, this
does not mean the book will appear exactly the same on all
types of screens and in all situations.

Problem: Book Type Not Normal
If the book type is not displaying in the correct typeface,
there are two possibilities.
1. Not Enough Memory: When too many other programs are
running on Windows, the ActiveBook will not be able to
retrieve the typefaces it wishes to use when displaying the
book (because the other programs are using too much of the
computer's memory). In this case, the ActiveBook will begin
displaying all type in the Windows System font. To solve this
problem, close the ActiveBook, close some other applications,
and try running the ActiveBook again.
2. Fonts are Mapped: Some Windows utilities allow you to
"map" fonts from one typeface to another. This "fools"
Windows into providing fonts that are different than those
that the ActiveBook requests, which will cause your book's
text to display strangely. To solve this problem turn off font
mapping.

Problem: Book Has No Border
This occurs when the ActiveBook cannot load the book's
background. This normally occurs in the same situation as
described in the "Book Type Not Normal" problem topic: too
many programs are running on Windows. To solve this problem,
close the ActiveBook, close some other applications, and try
running the ActiveBook again.

Problem: Book Looks Tiny
The ActiveBook is designed to take up the full screen on a
standard VGA resolution monitor. On machines of higher
resolution, the ActiveBook will take up less than the full
screen. The higher the resolution of the screen, the less
screen space will be taken. This behavior is normal.

Problem: Grainy or Silent Video
When viewing an ActiveBook containing full motion video
objects, the system requirements are assumed to be multimedia
capable (i.e. MPC or equivalent) and therefore should include
at least a 256 color capable VGA monitor and adapter, a
sound card, and a CD ROM drive. On systems that do not meet
these requirements, the ActiveBook will still attempt to play
the video. However, the playback display will appear "grainy"
if 256 colors are not available. The playback sound will not
be as clear as intended if you are using the PC's internal
speaker.

Problem: Video Runs Full Screen
Video in the ActiveBook is intended to be viewed in a small
window right in the book's page, though it will work in full
screen mode as well. If your videos are taking up the whole
screen when you play them, then your video defaults have been
changed through another application, such as the Media Player.
To see the videos right in the book's page, as they were
intended, you must reset the video defaults to show video in a
window. This can be done using the Media Player in video
mode.

=>   Information is Lost

We have attempted to protect against data loss in every way
possible. If you find that your ActiveInformation pages are
suddenly missing all of the data that you had previously entered,
don't give up hope. Similarly, any Notes, Bookmarks and other
user controlled state in the book will disappear as well.
There is a possibility of retrieving your lost information. All
information you enter into the ActiveBook is stored in files
within a directory on your hard disk. If your information
suddenly disappears then there are two possibilities. The
first is that the files cannot be found by the ActiveBook, but
that they still exist on disk. The other possibility is that
the files are really missing.

Problem: The Files Can't be Found
The ActiveBook decides where on your disk to look for your
files by using the ACTIVEBK.INI file (found in the Windows
directory). If this file is missing or corrupted, then the
ActiveBook won't be able to figure out where your files are.
In this case, the ActiveBook will simply create new files in a
default location. This would cause all of your ActiveInformation
to return to their starting values. This could happen if you
have reinstalled Windows, reinstalled the ActiveBook to a new
location, had a major disk error, or accidentally changed or
deleted the ACTIVEBK.INI file. To solve this problem, restore
an older copy of ACTIVEBK.INI from backup and place it in your
Windows directory. If none is available, try reinstalling the
ActiveBook to the same directory. If the files holding your
ActiveInformation are already on disk, the installation program
will not overwrite them. The install program will attempt to
correct any problems in your ACTIVEBK.INI file.

Problem: The Files are Missing
If your ACTIVEBK.INI file is correct, then the files are
most likely no longer available. This could happen because of a major
disk error or because you accidentally removed the files or
the directory where the files were located. To resolve this
problem, restore the files from backup and place them into the
appropriate ACTIVEBOOK directory for the book(s) in question.
