I. New Version of the PostScript Printer Driver

A. Description of the changes in the new driver

The Microsoft TrueType Font Pack 2 includes an updated
PostScript printer driver that prints highly complex TrueType
fonts, such as Augsburger Initials, more efficiently and
correctly. This version also includes other minor changes made
to the driver since it was released with Windows 3.1. The new
version simply replaces the old driver, without affecting how
you print.

B. Installing the new printer driver

The Setup program automatically checks your system for an older
version of the PostScript printer driver:

--If the Setup program finds an older version, it asks if you
want to install the new driver or continue to use the older
one. If you choose the new driver, the Setup program will
automatically copy it to the correct location on your hard
disk. The next time you print, your system will automatically
  use the new driver.

--If you do NOT have the PostScript driver on your hard disk,
the Setup program will not copy the driver to your Windows
  system directory.

If you later decide to start using a PostScript printer, you
will have to install the PostScript driver that came with
Windows 3.1. To do this, open the Printers icon on the Control
Panel, and install and configure the printer as described in
your Windows 3.1 documentation. Next, to install the updated
PostScript printer driver included with the Microsoft True Type
Font Pack 2, run the Setup program.

II. Font Assistant

A. Limitations on groups and group names

Font Assistant will allow you to create up to 63 groups. Group
names must not exceed 32 characters or contain a double-quote
character (").

B. Font Assistant and the Control Panel

While the Fonts dialog box from the Control Panel is open, do
not activate or deactivate font groups in Font Assistant. Close
the Fonts dialog box from Control Panel before changing the
active font groups on your system in Font Assistant. Failing to
follow this advice can cause the two applications to get differing
views of the active fonts on your system.

C. Predefined font groups in Font Assistant

Font Assistant includes predefined font groups that include all
the font products previously released by Microsoft. Grouping
fonts reflects personal choices, so consider the predefined groups
as suggestions only. You can always add or delete fonts from any
predefined group except the <all fonts> group.

To review the fonts in any group, highlight the group in the
Fonts Group(s) list. The Samples area to the right of the list
will display a one-line sample of each font in the highlighted
group.

D. Using the backup copy of the predefined groups

The Setup program automatically copies a backup copy of the
predefined font groups to your hard disk. If you modify the
predefined groups, you can always restore the original groups.

To restore the predefined font groups, use either DOS commands
or the File menu of the File Manager to copy the FAST.BAK file
to your FAST.INI file.

Alert: Before replacing FAST.INI with the backup version, be
aware that doing so also will erase any font groups you created.
If you want any of those groups, you'll have to recreate them.

E. Rebuilding the FAST.INI file

The FAST.INI file is Font Assistant's database of information
about the fonts installed on your system. This database can
become inconsistent with the installed fonts, especially if you
use the Control Panel to add, delete, or otherwise change the
fonts on your system while Font Assistant is running. For
example, installed fonts may fail to appear in the <all fonts>
group, and deleted fonts may still appear in font groups.

In the unlikely event that this happens, delete your FAST.INI
file from the Windows directory. The next time you start Font
Assistant, it will rebuild FAST.INI automatically. However, the
new FAST.INI will have only one group: <all fonts>. All the
predefined groups will be gone, and you'll have to recreate any
font groups you created from scratch.

F. Changing the sample text displayed by Font Assistant

To illustrate an individual font you select in the Fonts in
Active Group(s) list, Font Assistant displays sample text, which
it also uses if you print a type sample page. By default, the
sample text consists of the upper-case and lower-case alphabet,
digits, and common punctuation marks. At any time, however, you
can change this sample text.

To change the sample text used in Font Assistant, you change the
FAST.INI file:

	1. Exit Font Assistant.
	2. Make a backup copy of the FAST.INI file stored in your
	   Windows directory.
	3. Using NotePad or any other word-processing application,
	   open the FAST.INI file.
	4. Search for the "Sample=" string.
	5. After the "=" sign, replace the sample text with your
own text, typed without a carriage return.
	6. Save your revised FAST.INI file and, if you're not
	   using NotePad, specify text-only format.

To test your change:

	1. Start Font Assistant.
	2. In the Fonts in Active Group(s) list box, select a
single font--the sample should use your new text.

III. Updated Wingdings Font

Microsoft TrueType Font Pack 2 includes the latest version of
the original Wingdings font. The new version looks the same, but
it includes a revised Panose number, which Font Assistant needs
to characterize the font accurately (for details, see the
Microsoft TrueType Font Pack 2 User's Guide).

The Setup program automatically installs the new version of
Wingdings. If you don't want Wingdings on your system, remove it
using the Fonts icon on the Control Panel.

IV. Display and Printing of Complex Fonts

If you use many sizes of complex fonts on your system, Windows
might run out of system resources required to display those
characters. When this occurs, you might see a rectangular box or
blank in place of the character.

To correct this problem, close some of your open applications to
free resources for Windows. If this doesn't work, you may have
to restart Windows.

V. Manually Decompressing the Files

A. Using the Setup program

All files on the disks are compressed. The Setup program will
decompress the files during installation. You can, however,
decompress them manually. The EXPAND.EXE program that comes with
DOS 5.0 can decompress all files on the disk set except those
used only by the Setup program itself.

To use EXPAND.EXE, insert the disk with the file to want to
decompress into your floppy drive. Then, from DOS, type the
following (this example assumes you are using Drive A):

	expand a:\filename.ex_ c:\dir_name\filename.ext

where filename.ex_ is the name of the file you want to
decompress, and c:\dir_name\filename.ext is the full name of the
decompressed file on your hard disk. Your DOS 5.0 documentation
has complete details about EXPAND.EXE.

If your system doesn't have EXPAND.EXE, you can decompress the
files using the manual decompression command built into the
Setup program itself. Follow these steps:

	1. Place Disk 1 in the appropriate floppy drive.
	2. In File Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
	3. In the Command Line box, type the following (this
example assumes you are using Drive A):

	   a:\Setup /z [drive:][filename] [drive2:][filename2]

For example, if you're decompressing cour.tt_, you would type:

	   a:\Setup /z a:cour.tt_ c:\windows\system\cour.ttf

The Setup program will tell you that the file has been
decompressed successfully. If you have problems, please contact
Microsoft Product Support Services. In the US, call (206) 637-
7098. Outside the US, contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for assistance.

B. Using the Control Panel

In general, you should use the Setup program to install the
Microsoft TrueType Font Pack 2 fonts. If problems arise,
however, you can install the fonts using the Fonts icon on the
Control Panel. For details about the Control Panel, see the
Windows 3.1 documentation.
