INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Systems/Volume I - the first in a series of advanced trading
systems for MetaStock-Professional Version 3.0. The package contains 40
Profit Systems specifically designed for MetaStock, including 20
optimized and 20 non-optimized versions. Also included are tips on how
to begin discovering successful methods to trade any market using these
resources.

INSTALLATION

To install the Systems/package, run the installation utility provided on
the distribution disk. With your disk in drive A or B, type one of the
following lines at the DOS prompt and press [ENTER].

        A:INSTALL (if using drive A)
        B:INSTALL (if using drive B)

Follow the instructions on the screen. Note that it if our version of
Systems! is different from the version of MetaStock you have, a version
update will be required, and you will be given instructions by the
installation program on how to do it. Essentially, you must run
MetaStock once to let it update the systems file. Then, you can enter
the following command:

        SYSMERGE

to merge our Systems! file with your original systems, should you choose
to do so. The installation program will create a backup for your old
system file. To restore this file later, see Appendix C.

INDICATORS, FORMULAS, AND SYSTEMS IN METASTOCK HERE'S A METASTOCK REFRESHER:

Using the hot key method, the Indicator Menu is accessed by typing (i)
in MetaStock while a chart is displayed. You can plot a Stochastic
Oscillator or any other indicator easily from this menu. Note that the
indicator is plotted for visual reference only. You must inspect the
graph to visually spot conditions which identify a valid entry or exit
point. That is, there are no automation features available from the
indicator menu.

The Custom Formula Menu is accessed by typing (O) in MetaStock. Formulas
can be built (by the user) using the standard indicators listed in
Appendix A. Custom Formulas are plotted from this menu just like
indicators. As with indicators, you must visually examine the graphs to
determine if a trading signal has been generated.

The Systems Menu is accessed by typing CTRL - F10 Systems can employ
indicators and/or custom formulas to define trading rules with Entry,
Exit, and Stop conditions. Because of this, Systems can be used to test
the profitability of any strategy, and also to identify current trading
signals.

ABOUT OUR SYSTEMS

Our Systems replace the systems which come with MetaStockProfessional
v3.0 to give you 40 pre-defined trading systems which we have created
and tested with MetaStock. We have selected what we feel are the best,
most powerful indicators in the MetaStock program, and believe this set
of Systems will help you identify excellent trading signals in any
market.

Most of the Systems are based on oscillators, which means they are
designed to catch short-term and intermediate-term market swings.
However, a few, such as TRX, MAC, and MV2 are also designed to work in
trending markets.

There are two general groups of systems, Non-Optimized and Optimized.

Non-Optimized The Non-Optimized list begins with the "N-" prefix and contains
Systems indicators with default values. For example, the RSI
               systems (N-RSI-C, N-RSI-CS, and N-RSI-PS) are programmed with a
default RSI period value of 14 days. The Defaults programmed in
the Non-Optimized section are listed in Table 1.

Since MetaStock alphabetizes the systems in the System Menu, all 20
Non-Optimized Systems appear at the beginning of the menu, followed by
the Optimized Systems.

Optimized The Optimized Systems begin with the letters "O-" prefix and
Systems contain optimization parameters specifically designed for each
system. For example, O-RSI-C, O-RSI-CS, and O-RSI-PS are
programmed with the RSI period ranging from 8 to 25 (in
increments of 3), as shown in Table 2. Note that the default
value, 14, is in the middle of this range.

An important point is that we have limited the number of
optimizations to a subset which is designed to yield the most
benefit. For example, RSI could theoretically be optimized for
the upper and lower signal lines (70 and 30) in addition to the
period. However, if 5 optimization values are specified for each
of these, you would have to wait through (5 x 5 x 5) or 125 runs,
which would take 30 minutes per security! Through experimentat-
ion, we have determined that this level of optimization is The
classic 70/30 line for RSI works very well. The value which
really needs to be optimized is the period. This limits the
number of optimizations required to only 6, which will run in
about 30 seconds for 1 year of data on a 386 machine running at
               25 mhz.

Crossovers & Each system with a "-C" suffix in the name is designed as
Peaks a "crossover system". This is the typical way indicators are
interpreted. For example, a Relative Strength oscillator
generates a trading signal every time the oscillator crosses the
70/30 signal lines. A drawback to crossover systems is that they
are usually late. Each system with a"-P" suffix in the name is a
"peak system", meaning it is designed to test for peaks above
(or below) the signal line. This generally leads to faster
(tighter) signals, and works very, very well on stocks and
commodities which exhibit a smooth price transition.

Exit Systems which end in "S' ', such as N-CCI-CS and N-RSI-PS have
Stops an automatic Exit Stop written into the system definition. These
signals are designed to "cancel" an existing signal so another
one can be generated. To see an example of this, run the N-STO-CS
system, and examine the arrows on the chart. You will see that
everywhere there is a valid 70/30 crossing, a signal will be
generated, because each time the indicator goes hack over the
threshold, a stop is automatically triggered to the trade. This
insures that you will see every 70/30 signal that is generated.

Monetary For simplicity, we have left the Monetary Stops blank. if you
Stops wish, you can edit the Systems to specify the Stop-Loss, Profit,
Breakeven, and Inactivity Stop Levels you want to test.

Which System Should I Use?

Here's the key: Trading is a very personal endeavor. Anyone who has done
it long enough will tell you that. If you're not comfortable with a
system, you simply can't and won't trade it. If you don't trade it, you
won't make money using it.

So, the name of the game is:

"Find what works for YOU, and then STICK WITH IT."

That sounds easy - but it isn't, because all systems will have losses.
Most investors have a very hard time placing the next trade after a
string of 2 or 3 losses in a row. But that is what you have to do,
assuming the system you are following has a positive expectation.

Some investors are comfortable using a 'black box" trading system. The
fact that you are using MetaStock indicates that you want to prove to
yourself that a system works, and you want to understand why it works.
These Systems will give you a good starting place, and the automated
capabilities of our MetaStock-based utilities can make it easy to find
the answers you are looking for. It's extremely important that you run
your own experiments to verify any approach you are considering trading.

System-Testing using MetaStock 3.0

Basic Test We suggest you load each security in MetaStock (about 200 days)
Sequences and then test each of the 20 Non-Optimized Systems. To paraphrase
the MetaStock 3.0 Manual, here is how you run a System Test in
              MetaStock.

            * Type CTRL-F10. This will bring up the
              System Menu.

            * Move the cursor to the System you want to test.

            * Press the [ENTER] key repeatedly until the
              System Test begins.

            * When MetaStock has finished running the Test, it will display a
message indicating you should look at the Reports. Press
              [ENTER] at this prompt.

            * Press (R) at the System Menu for "Reports" and note the amount of
              profit which was generated.

            * Press (A) to display "Arrows" or the chart.

            * Press [ENTER] to the question: "Remove existing Arrows?"

            * Press [ENTER] to the question: "Change the trade arrow color?"

            * Press ESC twice.

Examine the chart using the methods described in the next section.
Repeat this process for each Non-Optimized System in the list (all 20 of
them) to determine which system works the best for the given security.

Evaluating Different securities have different personalifies, and react
System differently to each indicator. We believe the best approach to
Performance finding a good Performance system to trade is to find the most
profitable indicator for each individual security over a 200-day
             period of time.

By examining the' 'trading arrows" on the charts after each test run,
you should be able to select the system which performs the best for a
given security by asking the following questions:

Is the system usually late or early? You will note that the STO-PS
system generates earlier signals than the STO-CS system. However, on
stocks which do not exhibit a smooth transition in price, this may lead
to whipsaws. An early signal is good, but should be approached with
caution. Consistency is key.

How often does the system trade? Commissions can be a problem if a
system trades too much. However, some systems which generate a lot of
signals (such as PRICE ROC) may provide useful indications of change in
trend, and for this reason may be worth looking at on a daily basis as
"confirming" indicators.

How often is the system right? You will want to see at least 60% of the
signals profitable. Avoid systems which have 1 or 2 really great trades,
but lots of bad ones. The % long trades correct and % short trades
correct should both be over 60. You can get these statistics by doing
the following:

        * At the System Menu, type (R) for "Reports"
        * Type (I) to "Inspect"

From the Report Summary, you can examine the values for total long
trades, winning long trades, total short trades, and winning short
trades.

Optimizing Once you have selected the Non-Optimized System which worked
the best for a given security, you can use the equivalent Optimized
System to individually optimize it to "fine-tune" the indicator to the
individual security. While we agree that optimization should be used
with caution, we feel that if you are going to use a technical
indicator, your odds improve if it has been individually optimized for a
             given security.

For example, let' s say that N-RSI-C appears to be the best system for
consistently trading IBM. N-RSI-C is programmed with a default RSI
period of 14 days. You would run the optimizing system, O-RSI-C, to
determine which RSI value worked the best for IBM for the given time
frame.

After optimizing, you can examine the indicator parameters which result
in the highest profit by going through the MetaStock Report menu.

From the System Menu in MetaStock:

                * Type (R) for "Reports"

                * Type (V) for "View Systems"

                * Type [ENTER]

                * Type [ALT-O] to view the optimized parameters.

Trading with MetaStock

Find the If you follow the steps outlined above, you will be able to isolate
Best System the systems and parameter values which tend to work best for each
individual stock, commodity or mutual fund you are trading. For
example, you may find that a 17-Day Stochastic Peak trading system
works best for Alcoa Aluminum, a 12-Day Commodity Channel Index
Crossover system works best for Chrysler, and so on. Once you know
which system works best for each security you want to trade, you
can begin looking for daily signals using the individual systems.

Identify Use MetaStock to generate daily signals at the end of the day by
Daily loading a security and then running the appropriate system on it.
Signals Once you have done this, you can examine the "arrow" at the right
edge of the chart to see if a trading signal has been generated.
Alternatively, you may use our-AutoStock utility to do this for
you. (see AutoStock description, page 10.)

By using daily signals to alert you to a potential trades, and then
examining the charts for classical patterns to form, you can filter out
a large number of bad or questionable trades. As you can see from your
testing, no mechanical system is perfect. We firmly believe that pattern
recognition using the charts is a vital ingredient to successful
trading.

The following chart patterns are especially useful:

    * Head and Shoulder formations: Look for technical trading signals which
      coincide with the right "shoulder."

    * Triangles and Pennants: Triangles and pennants usually indicate a
continuation in trend. Look for a technical signal which goes with the
      trend, out of the triangle.

    * Channels and Trendlines: Price channels and trendlines will often form
where the price will remain within the confines of the channel or above/
below the trendline for a long period of time. You want to identify
technical trading signals which are in the direction of the channel
(trend), at the lower boundary for a long signal, and upper boundary for
      shorts.

    * Trading with the Trend: When considering whether or not to take a given
trading signal, always look at the signal to the immediate left of the
current one. For example,to enter LONG, the previous buy signal should be
LOWER than today's buy signal. That is, you always want to take a higher
buy signal (or a lower sell signal). This rule will help insure that you
are trading with the trend, and will filter out a lot of bad trades.
Remember - "The trend is your friend; trendless market is a friendless
      market."- wise trader

Appendix D lists several books which can really help in teaching you how
to identify these patterns, and what they mean. By combining technical
trading signals with classic charting techniques, your odds for success
are greatly improved.

The Nirvana Utilities

Nirvana has built several utilities which work directly with MetaStock
and Systems! to provide fully-automatic testing and daily screening.

WhatWorks What Works can automatically determine which system generated
the highest profit for each security in your database.
WhatWorks takes two inputs: A list of systems to test and a
list of securities to apply them to. WhatWorks will
automatically load each security into MetaStock, test each
system you specified, and extract report information generated
by the tests. The output is a list of security/system pairs
showing which system worked the best for each security. If you
use WhatWorks with any of the Optimized Systems, it will also
extract the parameter which resulted in the highest profit.
For example, WhatWorks can determine that a 17-day period for
O-STO-PS generated the highest profit on IBM, and so on.

The Input to The Optimizer is a list of security/system pairs,
Optimizer using any of the Optimized Trading Systems. The Optimizer
automatically tests each pair in MetaStock and reports the
best value for the parameter(s) of each system. A typical use
of The Optimizer is to first use WhatWorks to find the best
NonOptimized system for each security (e.g., N-STO-PS) and
then use The Optimizer to optimize each pair using the
equivalent Optimized Systems (O-STO-PS.) This takes
considerably less time than lettin g WhatWorks perform the
optimizations, since The Optimizer is limited to just one
          system per security.

AutoStock AutoStock is designed to automatically identify trading
signals each day using the systems selected by WhatWorks and/or
The Optimizer. The input to AutoStock is also a list of
security/system pairs. For Optimized Systems, the OPT
parameter(s) can also be specified, so that each security can
have its own, individualized trading system. AutoStock will run
MetaStock and produce a list of trading signals which were found
for each security/system pair, in the form: OPEN LONG, CLOSE
LONG, OPEN SHORT, or CLOSE SHORT.

Appendix A - Custom Formulas for Indicators in MetaStock

The following table lists every indicator in the MetaStock Indicator
Menu, with the corresponding formula. These formulas are used in the
System definitions.
