Before Installing

It is recommended that you have SMARTDrive, the Microsoft Windows
disk-caching program, installed for faster installation of PC-Xware.

Ensure that DOS SHARE.EXE is not loaded. If it is loaded it may cause
problems installing the APPLICATIONS disk. SHARE.EXE could have
been loaded explicitly via AUTOEXEC.BAT, implicitly from the
COMMAND.COM directory, or in Microsoft Windows for Workgroups,
SYSTEM.INI file. In the first case, remove SHARE.EXE from the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. In the second case, remove SHARE.EXE from the
directory that COMMAND.COM resides in, after saving it first. In the third
case, edit the [386Enh] section of Microsoft Windows SYSTEM.INI and
remove the "device=vshare.386" declaration.

If you are already using any NetManage utility, make sure that NetManage
is not currently running under Microsoft Windows. Generally, NetManage
utilities or ChameleonNFS is running if the NEWT and/or PortMapper icons
are on the Windows Desktop. If you are running any Chameleon utilities,
exit before running the PC-Xware setup program. To terminate
ChameleonNFS, in the Control Panel window, choose the Network icon.
The Network dialog box appears. In the "Installed Network" window choose
NetManage ChameleonNFS (all versions). Choose the Remove button to
remove NetManage ChameleonNFS. Choose the OK button.

The default PC-Xware configuration uses three (3) TCP and two (2) UDP
network sockets. Please ensure that your network software has additional
sockets available for each of your X applications.

Networks

3COM (3COMNT)

PC-Xware also supports 3COM TCP/DPA 2.1. 3COM TCP/DPA 2.1
supports TCP/IP connections via their Windows Sockets Library
implementation (WINSOCK.DLL). PC-Xware does not work with the
initial 3COM 2.1 WINSOCK.DLL release. Do not choose "Winsock
compatible TCP/IP" from PC-Xware's Network Type dialog box during
PC-Xware installation. Instead, follow these installation instructions:

If you have upgraded from 3COM TCP/DPA 2.0, copy the 3COM
TCP/DPA 2.0 WSOCKETS.DLL file into your 3COM 2.1 directory.
Select "3COM TCP/DPA 2.0" from PC-Xware's Network Type dialog
box during PC-Xware installation.

If you do not have access to the 3COM TCP/DPA 2.0 WSOCKETS.DLL
file, select "3COM TCP/DPA 1.2" from PC-Xware's Network Type dialog
box during PC-Xware installation.

The following 3COM TSR modules need to be loaded in the following
order:

TCPLITE.EXE
NMTSR.EXE
SOCKTSR.EXE
DNTSR.EXE (only needed if host names are resolved via a Domain
		Name Server)

Beame & Whiteside (BWTCP)

Beame & Whiteside is supported through the BW WLIBSOCK.DLL
module. BW 3.0a contains the current WLIBSOCK.DLL (dated 5/25/93
or later). If you have 2.3 or 3.0, contact Beame & Whiteside to obtain
the latest WLIBSOCK.DLL module.

Note: XDM connections are not supported with BW 2.3 even if the
latest WLIBSOCK.DLL module is used.

NCD's Integrated Stack (NEWT)

Serial numbers and authorization codes are case sensitive.

SUN PC-NFS (PCNFS)

Because of the low DOS memory requirement of PCNFS, we
recommend you load high as many devices and TSRs as possible.

Walker Richer & Quinn Reflection (REFLEC)

The buffers must be configured to be the maximum number (16). This
setting is found under Advanced Configuration of Network Parameters
in the TCP Connection Setup Utility of the network Setup program.

Windows Sockets (WINSOCK)

Windows Sockets network support for network vendors other than
NetManage has not been certified. We recommend that you use the
direct support for your network.

Wollongong Runtime 1.2 (PATHWY)

The number of packet buffers should be increased to the Number of
NetBIOS sessions plus one (1).

To make the change, run PWSETUP.EXE and select:
	Configuration*Modify TCP/IP Software Setup

The number of packet buffers and the Number of NetBIOS sessions are
set in the Advanced Configuration Setup.

Changing Network Software

PC-Xware only installs the network module needed for your selected
network type. If you change network software, you will need to install an
additional PC-Xware network module. Please refer to "Changing Network
Software" in chapter 2, "Installation" of your "PC-Xware Operations Guide".

PC-Xware Initialization File (XWARE.INI)

When PC-Xware is installed, a file (XWARE.INI) is placed in the
MS-Windows installation directory. This file contains the NVRAM
(non-volatile random access memory) startup information for PC-Xware.
The default contents and a brief explanation of XWARE.INI follow:

[NVRAM]
net-network-software-type=network type
unit-serial-number=serial number
unit-authorization-code=authorization code
unit-installation-directory=installation directory

network type specifies the network type that will be used
with PC-Xware. For example, BWTCP, to specify Beame & Whiteside network
software.

serial number specifies the serial number provided with
your copy of PC-Xware. For example, "123456".

authorization code specifies the authorization code provided with
your copy of PC-Xware. For example, "1-2345-6-789ABC".

installation directory specifies the directory where
PC-Xware is installed. For example, "C:\PCXWARE\".

Note: All the default entries in XWARE.INI are established at the time
PC-Xware is installed.

Windows TEMP Environmental Variable

Windows font files (.FON) are created and accessed by PC-Xware. If the
Windows TEMP environmental variable has been set, PC-Xware will store
the font files in the specified directory. Otherwise, the font files will be
created in the root directory of your boot disk drive. These font files are
temporary and are deleted by PC-Xware at termination. If for some reason
PC-Xware is terminated abnormally, the existing font files will be deleted the
next time PC-Xware is executed. For further information on the Windows
TEMP environmental variable see your Microsoft Windows User's Guide.

XRemote

Using the XRemote function requires NCD supplied host software to be
installed. The host software for PC-Xware Remote can be obtained from
NCD PC-Xdivision at no charge until December, 1993. It can be ordered
(part number PC3020) or the binaries for a specific host and operating
system can be downloaded from the Bulletin Board. To order it please
contact the Sales Department at NCD PC-Xdivision. To obtain it from the
Bulletin Board System:

* The BBS is compatible with 2400 and 9600 baud modems.

* Communication parameters are: No Parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.

*       Modem phone number is (503) 646-1743.

* Download the appropriate host file from the XRemote directory.

Remote Window Managers

When an X window manager is run from your host to your PC, the X
window manager only knows about the X windows on the screen. It has no
knowledge of the Microsoft Windows. Thus, using the window manager to
raise or lower an X window, only raises or lowers it within the stack of X
windows. PC-Xware attaches a "Lower" item to all system menus. If you
need to lower Microsoft Windows beneath your X windows, select the
"Lower" item from any of your Microsoft Windows system menus.

Limitations

* File and Print services are not available with XRemote.

* When making an XDM connection from the PC-Xware Available
Connections window, the Login Chooser is sometimes displayed for a
very short period before the XDM login window appears. This is due to a
delayed XDM connection caused by heavy network traffic or host use.
This does not adversely affect the operation of PC-Xware.

* Due to problems with PC-Tools for Windows desktop software, icons
created with PC-Xware will not be accessible. It is recommended that
you create your PC-Xware icons while NOT running PC-Tools for
Windows.

* When using PseudoColor visuals, Microsoft Windows applications that
allocate more than the 20 standard Microsoft Windows colors will not get
the correct colors copied into the Microsoft Windows clipboard when
using Microsoft Windows cut and paste. Microsoft Windows Excel is one
such application.
