                       NDIS Drivers Installation Notes

 This file contains instructions on installing NDIS drivers for the
 network operating systems listed below.

 -  Microsoft LAN Manager
 -  3Com 3+Open
 -  IBM Lan Server
 -  DEC Pathworks
 -  Microsoft Windows for Workgroups
 -  Banyan VINES
 -  Other NDIS-based installations

 Microsoft LAN Manager versions 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2
 ------------------------------------------------

 The EtherDisk diskette contains a subdirectory structure and files that make
 it an OEM import disk for the LAN Manager installer. Use the import function
 of the LAN Manager installer to capture the NDIS driver from the EtherDisk
 diskette. Be sure to save the new configuration before exiting the
 installer.

 3Com 3+Open
 -----------

 The 3Com 3+Open installer already has the maximum number of drivers it can
 support, so the installation does not use the 3+Open installation utility.
 Instead, a replacement strategy is used.

 1. Install 3+Open and select the EtherLink II adapter driver for
     installation.

 2. Run the Menu Program in the root of this EtherDisk diskette, and select
     NDIS Drivers for LAN Manager on the first menu, followed by Install
     NDIS Drivers from the second menu.

 3. Select Install 3Com 3+Open Drivers from the third menu.

 This installation replaces the existing 3+Open EtherLink II installation with
 the 3Com EtherLink III installation by copying the NDIS driver(s) from the
 EtherDisk diskette to the hard disk and modifying the CONFIG.SYS and
 PROTOCOL.INI files to use the 3Com EtherLink III adapter. To ensure the
 change is reliable, the CONFIG.SYS and PROTOCOL.INI files are copied to the
 EtherDisk diskette, edited, and returned to the hard disk. If the
 installation fails for any reason, the original 3+Open installation on the
 hard disk is left intact. In addition, the original CONFIG.SYS and
 PROTOCOL.INI files on the hard disk are renamed to .OLD.

 IBM LAN Server
 --------------

 This EtherDisk diskette contains Ethernet driver import files for
 IBM LAN Server.

   IBM LAN Server 3.0

   IBM LAN Server 3.0 contains an installer for both OS/2 (LAPS) and DOS
   (DXMAID). Both of these installation utilities fully support OEM network
   adapter driver import capability.

   DOS Installation

   Run the DXMAID installer from the IBM LAN Support diskette. Use the
   defaults from the first menu. The second menu prompts you to enter the
   drive and path for the import diskette. Remove the LAN Support diskette,
   put the 3Com EtherDisk diskette in the drive, and type A:\NDIS\DOS for the
   drive and path. The installer will pause after it copies the files needed
   from the EtherDisk diskette. Place the LAN Support diskette back in the
   drive, and continue the installation.

   OS/2 Installation

   Run the LAPS installer from the LAN Adapter and Protocol diskette. From
   the second menu, select the Install option. LAPS then installs itself and
   other files, and returns to the second menu. Select Install again. On the
   next menu, LAPS prompts for a drive and path for installation. Remove the
   LAPS diskette and insert the EtherDisk diskette in the drive. Type
   A:\NDIS\OS2 for the drive and path. LAPS will copy the needed files from
   the EtherDisk diskette. When the acknowledge message appears at the end of
   the copy, reinsert the LAPS diskette and continue with the installation.

 IBM LAN Server 2.0

 LAN Server 2.0 is not as sophisticated as LAN Server 3.0. Installation can
 be done successfully, but manual intervention is required. In all cases, the
 user is required to edit files. For OS/2, the E editor is fine. For DOS, use
 either EDLIN or EDIT.

   DOS Installation

   Run the DXMAID installer from the LAN Support diskette. Specify the
   Ethernet adapter installation from the menu. When DXMAID is completed, do
   the following to complete the installation.

   1. Copy the EtherLink III NDIS driver to the hard disk. Type:

      COPY A:\NDIS\DOS\ELNK3.DOS C:\LANMAN

   2. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file.

      a. Change the line:

         device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS

         to

         device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS /I:\LANMAN

      b. Change the line:

         device = XX.DOS

         to

         device = \LANMAN\ELNK3.DOS

      c. Save the file and exit the editor.

   3. Enter the LANMAN subdirectory. Type:

      CD LANMAN

   4. Rename the PROTOCOL.INI file to save it. Type:

      REN PROTOCOL.INI PROTOCOL.OLD

   5. Append the PROTOCOL.INI fragment from the 3Com EtherDisk diskette. Type:

      COPY PROTOCOL.OLD + A:\NDIS\DOS\PROTOCOL.INI  PROTOCOL.INI

   6. Edit the new PROTOCOL.INI file.

      a. Four lines after the line [ETHERNET], change the line:

         Bindings = IBMAC

         to

         Bindings = ELNK3

      b. Two lines before the line:

         ;3C509 3Com EtherLink III adapter

         change the blank line to

         [ELNK3]

      c. Save the file and exit the editor.

   The installation is complete. The LAN Support program activates the next
   time the machine boots.

   OS/2 Installation

   1. Insert the IBM OS/2 Requester Diskette #1 and run the LAPS installation
      program. Select Advanced Installation on the second menu.

   2. Insert the OS/2 Protocol and Drivers diskette when the prompt appears.
      After LAPS has completed copying the files from the Protocol and Drivers
      diskette, select the Copy Additional Drivers option from the next menu.
      The next menu prompts for the drive and path for the additional drivers.

   3. Insert the EtherDisk diskette and type A:\NDIS\OS2. LAPS copies the
      appropriate 3Com adapter files to the hard disk and returns to the
      options menu.

   4. Select the Configure Workstation option. The next menu prompts for
      adapter and protocol options. In the adapters window, page down until
      the 3Com EtherLink Family OS/2 menu item appears. Select this item and
      continue the installation. When the installation is complete, exit the
      installer.

   The installer presents a message that the system needs to be rebooted for
   the changes to take effect. However, you must complete the following
   steps before you reboot the computer.

   1. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file. After the line:

       device=C:\IBMCOM\PROTMAN.OS2

       insert the line:

       device=C:\IBMCOM\MACS\ELNK3.OS2

   2. Save the file and exit the editor.

   3. Reboot the computer, and the OS/2 requester will activate.

 DEC Pathworks
 -------------

 To install DEC Pathworks version 4.1 on a DOS NDIS workstation, DOS must be
 installed on the target workstation C: drive, or you must have a bootable
 DOS floppy.  Follow these steps:

 1. Insert the version 4.1 DOS Client Setup diskette in your floppy drive.

 2. Change to that drive and execute the NETSETUP.EXE program.

 3. Press [Ctrl]+[F10] twice to change to advanced-operator mode.

 4. Follow the screens to select a Transport Protocol.

 5. Insert the appropriate diskettes for the selection you made in step 4.

 6. Select your network adapter by typing ETHERNET or TOKEN-RING.

 7. Select the option (OTHER NDIS) adapters.

 8. When prompted for the DRIVE:\PATH\FILENAME for the NDIS driver, type:

    A:\NDIS\DOS\ELNK3.DOS

 9. When prompted for the full DRIVE:\PATH of the PROTOCOL.INI fragment,
    type:

    A:\NDIS\DOS

 10. Follow the rest of the installation screens and the procedure for writing
     the KEY DISK.

 The NETSETUP program will build the PROTOCOL.INI file for you and modify your
 startup files to use the adapter you have selected.

 NOTE: If you are using a 16-bit adapter in DOS Pathworks, you must add the
        /N parameter to the line in the STARTNET.BAT file that starts the
        network scheduler. The line usually looks like:

        %BOOT%\DECNET\sch /h

 Microsoft Windows for Workgroups
 --------------------------------

 Microsoft Windows for Workgroups version 3.1 contains the 3Com EtherLink III
 NDIS driver.

 NOTE: The EtherLink III NDIS driver in Windows for Workgroups 3.1 is
        suitable for all 3C509 ISA and 3C579 EISA products but will not work
        with the 3C529 Micro Channel products. The NDIS driver was updated
        to accommodate the 3C529 products after Windows for Workgroups
        shipped.

 To use the latest 3Com NDIS driver in Windows for Workgroups:

 1. Install Windows for Workgroups and select the 3Com EtherLink III driver
    during installation.

 2. After installation is completed, insert the EtherDisk diskette and run
    the Menu Program. Select the NDIS driver for LAN Manager, from the first
    screen, and Update NDIS Drivers, from the second screen.

 3. Enter the drive letter of the disk that contains Windows for Workgroups.
    The menu system will scan the disk drive and prompt for each NDIS driver
    replacement. Enter 'Y' to replace the old driver with the updated NDIS
    driver on the EtherDisk diskette.

    For example: The EtherLink III DOS NDIS driver is located in the Windows
    for Workgroups base directory. This is usually C:\WINDOWS.

 Banyan VINES
 ------------

 To install VINES 5.0 software on a DOS NDIS workstation, follow these
 instructions. DOS must be installed on the target workstation C: drive, or
 you must have a bootable DOS floppy.

 1. Use the DOS MD command to create a subdirectory called \VINES.

 2. Copy the contents of the VINES LAN S/W (DOS) Install diskette into the
     \VINES subdirectory.

 3. Copy the contents of the NDIS subdirectory on the VINES LAN S/W (DOS) 2
     of 2 diskette into the \VINES subdirectory.

 4. Copy the PROTOCOL.INI fragment from the NDIS\DOS subdirectory on the
     EtherDisk diskette to the \VINES subdirectory.

 5. Edit the PROTOCOL.INI file to read as follows:

     [PROTOCOL MANAGER]
      DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$

     [VINES_XIF]
      DRIVERNAME = NDISBAN$
      BINDINGS = ELINK3

     [ELINK3]
      DRIVERNAME = ELNK3$

 6. Run the PCCONFIG.EXE program located in the \VINES subdirectory.

 7. Select option 1, Network Card Settings.

 8. Select the NDIS Ethernet option.

 9. The NDIS workstation screen appears. Enter the IRQ that you selected for
     the EtherLink III adapter.

     NOTE: For the 3C509 adapter, select the IRQ using the diagnostic
            and configuration utility. For the 3C579 adapter or the 3C509
            adapter in EISA mode, select the IRQ using the EISA configuration
            utility. For the 3C529 adapter, select the IRQ using the Micro
            Channel setup program.

 10. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and add the following lines, substituting A:
     for C: for a floppy disk installation.

     DEVICE = C:\VINES\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\VINES
     DEVICE = C:\VINES\ELNK3.DOS

 11. Add the BAN command to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. BAN loads the NDISBAN
     drivers and reads the PCCONFIG.DB file to invoke changes made during the
     PCCONFIG stage.

 Other NDIS-based Installations
 ------------------------------

 Under this NDIS subdirectory are the directories DOS and OS2. These
 directories contain the 3Com adapter NDIS driver and PROTOCOL.INI fragments
 for DOS and OS/2. Use these files to install the NDIS driver and create your
 own PROTOCOL.INI file.
