                          DOS INSTALLATION

You should be at the main DOS prompt (usually C:\>) to start the install
process. If you are in WINDOWS, exit WINDOWS and go to the DOS prompt --
It is not the same thing to run a DOS Window under WINDOWS. Exit WINDOWS
completely for best results.

First, insert the Distribution Diskette carefully in your floppy drive.

Second, at the main DOS prompt (C:\>) type the designation for your floppy
drive, typically A: or B: and press ENTER.

Third, at the floppy prompt (A:\> or B:\>) type GO and press ENTER. You
MUST be at the floppy prompt - typing A:GO or B:GO at the C:\> will not
work.

The Main Menu Screen will appear with the following options:

             Preview ScreenSavers from the diskette;

             Install the ScreenSaver to your hard disk;

             view these Help screens

             Escape to Quit

Each option can be invoked 3 different ways -- (1) Mouse Click; (2) Type
the underscored letter; or (3) press F1 for Preview, F2 for Install,
F3 for Help and the Escape key to quit.

N.B. if you don't have a mouse installed F1, F2 and F3 appear on the
buttons.

                          MAIN MENU OPTIONS

PREVIEW - will run the ScreenSaver from the floppy disk prior to
installation on your hard disk. Since it is played from the diskette
it will take longer to start and will run much slower then after
you install and run from the hard disk.

INSTALL-- will copy the ScreenSaver and other need files to your hard
disk install and activate the TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) Program.

You will be asked 4 questions:

Destination drive and directory Default = C:\XMASAVER

        Number of minutes of inactivity
before ScreenSaver activates Default = 3 (minutes)

        ScreenSaver to be loaded each
time your system is restarted Default = Y

If entries are correct Default = Y

It is suggested that you accept the default entries.

After each choice, whether you choose the default or
type in your own response, press ENTER to accept the entry.

HELP -- to view these information screens
(looks like you figured this out already!)

ESCAPE -- Quits and exits to DOS prompt

When INSTALL is chosen, and installation was successful
the following occur:

    1. the destination directory is created on your hard drive
    2. installation files are copied to that directory
    3. a batch file is created in that directory
    4. the batch file is run to load the TSR
    5. you receive the 'Installation complete!' message
    6. In addition, if you chose to have the ScreenSaver loaded when
you start your system, an entry was made as the last entry
          in your C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

If you run the installation process more than once, DO NOT answer Y to
the question 'Do you want the screen saver to be installed every time
you restart your system?'. If you do, an additional entry will be placed
at the end of your C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Once the TSR has been loaded, you may activate it manually by pressing
and releasing 3 keys at the same time CTRL - LEFT SHIFT - S (S for SAVER)

When the ScreenSaver is running, either because it was activated manually,
or through automatic pop-up, it will exit when the ESCAPE key is pressed.

                          ABOUT THE TSR

If you would like more detailed information about the MediaDisk TSR,
change to the installation directory (usually C:\XMASAVER) and type
XMASTSR /?. This will show the TSR Help Screen WITHOUT installing the
TSR.

If the ScreenSaver has been loaded and activated to pop-up and you want
it to remain loaded but inactive, press CTRL - LEFT SHIFT - I (I for
INACTIVE).

If the ScreenSaver has been loaded and is inactive and you want to
activate it again, press CTRL - LEFT SHIFT - A (A for ACTIVE).

If you wish to remove the TSR completely from memory, and it was the last
TSR loaded, go to the installation directory (usually C:\XMASAVER) and type
XMASTSR /U and press ENTER.

You may reload the ScreenSaver TSR at anytime by going to the installation
directory (usually C:\XMASAVER) and typing SAVERIN and Pressing ENTER.
Don't worry about installing it twice, the TSR will not install another
instance of itself - it will simply update its parameters with any
new command line arguments contained in SAVERIN.BAT.

The TSR can be loaded high. You can do this by loading SAVERTSR manually
by typing your own 'LOADHIGH' command and XMASRTSR at the C:\XMASAVER>
prompt. When SAVERIN.BAT is executed - SAVERIN will find the TSR loaded
high and update its parameters.
                        MORE ABOUT THE TSR

The TSR can be loaded manually by typing XMASTSR in the install directory.
Its defaults are as follows:

       1.  Wait for 3 minutes of inactivity;

       2. Clear out a 420K block of memory by swapping out current
video display and current memory to Extended Memory (above
1 Megabyte) if present, or if not present saving to a disk
           file;

       3. Spawn the program GRASPRT.EXE with the argument XMASAVER.GL /S
from the directory that the TSR was loaded from.

       4. Continue to run that program until the ESCAPE key
            is pressed; then

       5. Restore memory and video display that had been current
prior to swapping (either from Extended Memory or Disk)

       6. Continue to stay resident waiting for a further
            3 minutes of inactivity.

SAVERIN.BAT loads the TSR, sets the delay, memory, Arguments, and /W to
inhibit TSR pop-up in WINDOWS. SAVERIN.BAT can be edited with any ASCII
editor - e.g. to reduce the delay to 30 seconds change T/3 to /T0:30.

                            WINDOWS 3.1

When you first type GO from the Distribution Diskette, the batch file
looked to see if you had a file called WIN.INI in C:\WINDOWS. If it
found this file, and there was about 90,000 Bytes available in the
directory, it copied the files XMASAVER.SCR and XMASAVER.PIF to the
C:\WINDOWS directory.

This means that when you next go to WINDOWS, the entry 'Lil Guy Screen-
Saver' will appear with other WINDOWS' 3.1 ScreenSavers in the DESKTOP
(click on MAIN, click on CONTROL PANEL, click on DESKTOP).

This ScreenSaver will act just as any other 3.1 ScreenSaver.
You may test it, set a WINDOWS' Time Delay. (Note: The Time Delay set
in the DESKTOP is NOT related to the DOS time delay set during DOS
install.)

If you do not have WINDOWS on your system these files WERE NOT copied.

If you DO have WINDOWS on your system, but the file WIN.INI is NOT in the
C:\WINDOWS directory, (i.e. D:\WINDOWS) - you must copy the ScreenSaver
files manually with the following 2 or 3 step process:

       1. Copy XMASAVER.SCR to your correct Windows directory
       2. Copy XMASAVER.PIF to your correct Windows directory

If you chose an install directory other than C:\XMASAVER then add step 3:

    3. Using the PIF editor, edit XMASAVER.PIF to reflect the correct
directory and other entries. See the sample PIF in the OnLine
        help screens.

The PIF on the Distribution Disk works in Standard Mode as well. As above,
use the PIF editor to edit XMASAVER.PIF with the correct entries.

Once the above 2 or 3 steps have been successfully completed, you will
find the Lil Guy ScreenSaver entry in your DESKTOP as above.

Once selected in the DESKTOP the Lil Guy ScreenSaver will remain installed
in WINDOWS until another ScreenSaver or NONE is selected in the DESKTOP.

                       CREATING AN ICON

If you wish, you may create an ICON for the Lil Guy ScreenSaver by
choosing the PROGRAM GROUP you wish it to be in, click on FILE in the
PROGRAM MANAGER, click on NEW, click on PROGRAM ITEM, enter XMASAVER
(the XMASAVER entry defaults to the PIF file) and choose an ICON
from the available PROGRAM MANAGER ICONS. The ScreenSaver can now
be activated by double-clicking on that Icon.

When you have created an Icon with Properties information, that
information overrides any similar but different information in the
PIF file. Such as starting directory, special hot keys.

Further, if you begin experimenting with the PIF file and PROPERTIES
information, you must keep in mind that after installation there are
2 PIF files on your system. One in the installation directory and
one in the C:\WINDOWS directory. Make sure when you edit a PIF file,
you are editing the one you will be using. As a precaution, since
it is not necessary AFTER a PIF file is successfully copied to your
WINDOWS directory, you may delete the PIF file in your installation
directory. This will eliminate any potential conflict.

If you have created an Icon, you may then further choose
'CTRL - LEFT SHIFT - S' (or any other sequence) as the WINDOWS'
hot key combination by entering this information in the XMASAVER
PROPERTIES' Dialogue Box. See the sample Dialogue box on the OnLine Help
screens.

Note: Hot key information is entered by actually pressing the keys
NOT just typing the key information.

                        WINDOWS 2.X and 3.0

Previous versions of WINDOWS did not provide a built-in mechanism for
a standard ScreenSaver. Your XMASAVER ScreenSaver WINDOWS 3.1 installation
WILL NOT work in 2.X and 3.0. Nevertheless, for the not faint-of-heart,
XMASTSR does have an option that will frequently be successful. If you
have a prior WINDOWS version, you can try to allow activation of the
ScreenSaver in WINDOWS by using any ASCII editor to remove the '/W'
parameter from the file 'SAVERIN.BAT' usually located in the default
install directory C:\XMASAVER. Removal of this parameter instructs the
TSR to allow pop-up in Windows using the DOS delay time. You may test
its operation by running WINDOWS and pressing and releasing the special
built-in WINDOWS 3 key hot key combination -

LEFT CTRL - LEFT SHIFT - RIGHT SHIFT

when these keys are released, the ScreenSaver should appear. It should
always work in REAL MODE. It may or may not work in STANDARD or ENHANCED
mode depending on your configuration and display card. Using the standard
VGA driver supplied with WINDOWS works best with the ScreenSaver
mechanism.

If the ScreenSaver still does not work as you wish, simply restore the '/W'
parameter in the file 'SAVERIN.BAT' and WINDOWS' pop-up will no longer
be attempted.
                             NETWORKS

XMASTSR works well with Networks. As more fully described below,
the Distribution Diskette may be copied into a directory on a Server and
each workstation may install it from the Server.

If a diskless workstation has a minimum of 530K free RAM above 1 Megabyte,
and SmartDrive or similar installed the TSR will use extended memory for
swapping. When the TSR activates it will download GRASPRT and
XMASSAVER.GL from the Server only once for the duration of the ScreenSaver
session, so it will not require continuing servicing from the Server.

If a diskless workstation does not have the minimum free RAM above
1 Megabyte, the TSR can still be loaded as above. However, when it
activates, it will swap out the required block of current local memory and
video display to the Install Directory on the Server. When it
deactivates, this file will be swapped back into the workstation's local
memory, placing an undue burden on some Networks, which you may want to
avoid.

It is not recommended that the ScreenSaver be installed on a Network
Server, either dedicated or Peer to Peer. The TSR's monitoring program
(to determine inactivity) is not always successful in recognizing logical
device activity and may interfere with network operation.
                      TROUBLE SHOOTING - DOS

If the ScreenSaver does not work at all, first try reinstalling from the
Distribution Diskette. Choose ALL DEFAULT entries.

If the ScreenSaver STILL does not work at all, check to make sure
a C:\XMASAVER directory has been created on your C drive.

If a C:\XMASAVER hasn't been created, it may be because there was not
enough room on the hard disk. Free up the amount of hard disk space
your install files need. This is about 575,000.

After freeing up the space, try reinstalling again from the Distribution
Diskette. Choose ALL DEFAULT entries.

If a C:\XMASAVER directory still has not been created, create the directory
manually:

change to the C:\ prompt by typing C: and CD \

at the C:\> prompt type the command MAKEDIR (MD) XMASAVER

change to the new directory CD XMASAVER
and copy the files on the Distribution Diskette to
         the C:\XMASAVER directory (i.e. COPY B:*.* C:\XMASAVER)

at the C:\XMASAVER> prompt, type SAVERIN and ENTER

Note: Using this manual method, you will copy some files that are
needed. See directory of needed files below.

If you were unable to make a directory, you may be up to your
maximum number of directories. Consult your DOS manual.

If you were able to make a C:\XMASAVER directory and copy the files,
and you type SAVERIN and get the message that the XMASTSR is installed
but the ScreenSaver still does not work at all -- you may not have enough
free hard disk space for the TSR to swap memory too.

If you have no extended memory (memory above 1 Megabyte) and you have only
300,000 bytes free on your hard disk the TSR will not operate because it
has nowhere to put the memory it is trying to swap out.

Freeing up at least 500K on the installation Drive will solve the
problem.

If the ScreenSaver still does not work - but you hear a beep when
the time has elapsed and the screen flickers - this means that
the TSR is looking for a file it can't find.
Check the directory and compare with the list of files in the directory
screen below. If files are missing, either reinstall or copy files
manually.

If the ScreenSaver still does not work - try running the ScreenSaver
manually by typing at the C:\XMASAVER> prompt, GRASPRT XMASAVER.GL /S.

If this works, it means there probably is a conflict with XMASTSR.EXE
and other TSR's on your system. Remove any unneeded TSR's OR you
can try loading XMASTSR.EXE before your other TSR's. This often
fixes the problem.

If you can't make enough RAM available and you have DOS 5.0 or 6.0
check your DOS manual and be sure that you are using HIMEM.SYS and
loading DOS high to free up conventional RAM.

If this still does not work, call the phone number listed
on the last screen.
                    TROUBLE SHOOTING - WINDOWS 3.1

If the ScreenSaver does not work in WINDOWS 3.1, check to make sure
there is an entry in your DESKTOP saying 'MDSaver ScreenSaver' (or
similar). If there is none - it means the file XMASAVER.SCR was not
copied from the Distribution Diskette to your WINDOWS directory.
It may not have been copied because there was no room on your disk.
If so, clear out about 100K bytes and reinstall.

If the entry still does not appear, you should copy the files XMASAVER.SCR
and XMASAVER.PIF to your WINDOWS Directory.

If the entry still does not appear call the phone number listed
on the last screen.

If the entry now appears but clicking on Test will not make the ScreenSaver
appear, you need to edit the PIF file to indicate where WINDOWS can
locate the ScreenSaver and GRASPRT.EXE. If there is no XMASAVER.PIF, you
need to copy it from the Distribution Diskette to your WINDOWS directory.

See Editing the PIF file under WINDOWS Installation above.

If Editing and saving the PIF file does not allow the ScreenSaver to
appear when you select TEST in the DESKTOP -- call the
phone number listed on the last screen.

                     TROUBLE SHOOTING NETWORKS

If the ScreenSaver appears to have loaded properly but does not work,
please review the DOS Trouble Shooting above.

If you have followed the instructions and it does not work, logoff
the Network and try it in 'local' mode.

Networks operation generally relies on TSR (Terminate and Stay
Resident) Programs as does the XMASTSR. It may that the
Network TSR's (or any other TSR for that matter) may conflict
with XMASTSR. Short of unloading all conflicting TSR's there
may be nothing more to be done.

By varying the loading order of TSR's (first Network TSRs then XMASTSR
or vice versa) you may be able to get the ScreenSaver to work.

If you are successful, but the ScreenSaver will not load automatically
when you first turn the computer on, and you have followed the DOS
trouble shooting instructions above, it may be that your Networked
PC has been set to use a non-standard COMSPEC (a DOS Environment
parameter). Our install program relies on the COMSPEC variable to
allow us to make the entry in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Check your AUTOEXEC.BAT file for the entry CALL C:\XMASAVER\SAVERIN.BAT.
If this entry does not appear, use any ASCII editor to add it. Once
this is added, your ScreenSaver will be loaded everytime the computer
is started up.

Making an Install Directory on your Hard Disk

You may find it useful to make a directory on your hard disk called
something like 'XMASDISK' and copy all files on the Distribution
Diskette to that directory. If you do that - then anytime you wish
to reinstall the ScreenSaver (i.e. to change the time delay, to
choose a new install directory) all you do is change to the XMASDISK
directory and at the C:\XMASDISK> prompt type GO and ENTER, just as
if you were installing from the floppy. This will also allow you
to view these information screens at anytime you wish.

This technique is invaluable if you wish to install this on individual
workstations on a Network from the Network Server or load the ScreenSaver
manually from a Network Server to a diskless workstation.
