Additional Information about Q&A for Windows

This document provides late-breaking information about Q&A for
Windows. For last-minute information for Q&A Write, open README.QW,
which is installed in the same directory as this file.

The information in this file is organized according to the following topics:
1. Installation
2. Documentation
3. Fonts and Printing
4. Networks
5. Troubleshooting
6. Upgrading from Q&A for DOS to Q&A for Windows
7. Compatibility Issues

1. Installation

1.1 Installation on a Network
There are two LAN Pack installation requirements:

1) All network user nodes must have the same drive letter reference as
the drive where the Q&A Network Pack is located.

2) The original administrator installation on a peer-to-peer network must
be done from a network node with the shared volume set to the same drive
letter as other network nodes. For example, if other nodes have the shared
volume set to N:, the installation must be done from a node that also has
the volume set to N:.

1.2 If you want to run a single copy of Q&A for Windows from a network
drive, you must perform an administrative installation. Run the Install
program and enter INSTALL /A. After the install starts, select the network
drive and directory to create the new network drive for Q&A. When you
finish, run the Install program again from the newly created network
directory. This will copy the correct files from the network to your local
machine. For additional information on network installation, see
Appendix D in the Q&A User's Manual and Reference.

2. Documentation

2.1 Q&A User's Manual and Reference page 3-22
Step 1 about retrieving records should say: "After saving the retrieve,
return to the Add/Edit area. Choose Cancel Retrieve from the Retrieve
menu or click the Cancel icon in the tool bar."

2.2 Q&A User's Manual and Reference page 3-43
Step 10, should say "Click the Attach button in the tool bar or choose
Attach Retrieve from the Retrieve menu."

2.3 Q&A User's Manual and Reference page 3-80
In Step 9, choose Company from the Merge Field drop-down list, but
do not click OK.

2.4 Q&A User's Manual and Reference page D-14
Under "What You Need to Use the Q&A Network Pack," the second bullet
item should say: "When using Q&A on a network, do not set the following
files as read only: the .DTF files or files in the LICENSE directory."

3. Fonts and Printing

3.1 If you use Adobe Type Manager (ATM) before version 2.5 and have the
Generic/Text Only printer driver selected, the message "Not enough memory to
complete this operation" will be displayed. You can correct this problem by
upgrading to ATM version 2.5 or later.

3.2 Screen fonts in an input form or reports do not scale correctly in Print
Preview when the report or input form is magnified less than 100%. When you
print the report or input form, Windows will substitute the closest
available font. However, the results will probably not look exactly the
same as what you see on the screen.

3.3 Q&A supports all standard Windows fonts. To get the closest
representation of fonts on the screen and printer, use font software that
provides the same scalable fonts on the screen and printer, such as TrueType
fonts, Windows bitmap fonts, Windows stroke (vector) fonts, Adobe Type
Manager (ATM), Bitstream FaceLift, and Hewlett Packard Intellifont-for-
Windows. (ATM, Bitstream FaceLift, and HP Intellifont-for-Windows are
third-party font software packages. Contact your dealer for more information.)

3.4 When printing to an HP Laserjet Series III printer on a Novell
network, you can encounter problems when printing small fonts, less
than 10 point. If this occurs, turn the Enable Tab option off. To do that,
follow these steps:
  1) Select Printers from the Windows Control Panel.
  2) Click the Connect button.
  3) Click the Network button.
  4) Click the Options button.
  5) Deselect the Enable Tabs option so it is not checked.

3.5 In some cases, Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups have different
printer drivers for the same printer. This may result in a confusing message.
For example, if you are running WFW and have an HP LaserJet III Si as your
default printer and print a file that was printed on an HP LaserJet III Si
and saved from Windows 3.1, you will get the message.

"This document is formatted for an HP LaserJet III Si printer. This
printer is not currently installed on this system. The default printer
will be used."

In this case the default printer is an HP LaserJet III Si. OK the
dialog and the file will print correctly.

4. Networks

4.1 For Q&A to run properly on a Lantastic network, do the following on the
server where Q&A is installed. In the CONFIG.SYS file, set FILES=250. In
STARTNET.BAT, add this statement: SHARE /L:500 /F:4096
All the Q&A .EXE and .DLL files should be set as read only.

4.2 When using Q&A with Windows for Workgroups, set sharing to Allow
Sharing or Disallow Sharing for each database. If the sharing mode is
set it to automatic, you can have file-locking problems. To set the
sharing mode, choose Database Structure from the Select menu, then
choose Sharing Mode from the Security menu.

4.3 See the Installation section above for information on Network
installation. See section 2.3 above for information on the Network Pack.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 The animated, online tutorial is designed to run at a screen
resolution of 640x480 (VGA) with 16 colors. If you experience video
display problems, or system instability while running the tutorial,
change your screen resolution to 640x480 (VGA). An easy way to do this
is to select Windows Setup from the Main Group. From the Options menu,
choose Change System Settings. Select the Display Box and choose either
the VGA or 640x480 - 16 color option.

5.2 The database files in the SAMPLES directory; for example, INVENTRY
and HRFILE, are designed to run at 640x480 (VGA) screen resolution.

5.3 Q&A for Windows supports the following file formats for importing or
exporting data: dBASE II, III, or IV; Excel 2.1, 3, and 4, Lotus 1-2-3
2.1 or 3.x, Paradox 2, 3, or 3.5, Macintosh text or standard ASCII text.

5.4 Q&A for Windows can lookup data from an external file. However, the
external file must be either another Q&A database or a dBASE file. See
page 17-68 in the documentation for more information on using an external
data file.

5.5 For other troubleshooting issues, see Troubleshooting in the online
help system.

6. Upgrading from Q&A for DOS to Q&A for Windows

6.1 If you are upgrading from Q&A for DOS and plan to access your data files
with both the DOS and Windows versions of Q&A, we suggest you follow these
steps:

1) Upgrade all DOS users with the disk labeled "Interoperability Update
Files." (Note: To run the update program on a monochrome monitor type
A:UPDATE -M)

2) Make a backup copy of any Q&A data files you plan to upgrade.

3) Upgrade all databases by opening them with Q&A for Windows. It is best to
have one person do this and no other users should open the file until the
upgrade operation is complete.

4) For more information, read the booklet Transitioning from Q&A for DOS to
Q&A for Windows.

7. Compatibility Issues

7.1 If you are using Q&A for DOS and use After Dark as a screen saver, we
suggest you not install the After Dark DOS screen blanker. The screen
blanker can interfere with Q&A for DOS operation.

7.2 Some high resolution video drivers for the Headland Technology
video chipset used in the NorthGate SlimLine ZXP models may not
work correctly with fill patterns. The pattern may fill with the
complement of the selected color. Standard VGA modes on these machines
display patterns correctly.
