The American Heritage Dictionary for Windows
College Edition, Version 1.1

The following information supplements the printed documentation:

INSTALLING AMERICAN HERITAGE

If you are using a disk compression utility such as Stacker, be
sure you have 11MB of actual disk space before you install
American Heritage. The American Heritage files are compressed,
so they cannot be further compressed by a disk compression
utility. The American Heritage installation program checks for
disk space before it starts the installation, but the disk space
reported with a disk compression utility is not the actual disk
space. To check for the actual disk space, check how much disk
space your system reports (you can use the DIR command), and
divide it by the compression ratio of your disk utility (1.8 is a
common ratio). If the result is less than 11MB, you must free
additional space before you can install American Heritage.

ABBREVIATIONS

American Heritage provides definitions for abbreviations. For
example, if you want to know what the abbreviation "CPU" stands
for, type CPU in the Word box. Choose Define or press Enter to
view the definition.

BIOGRAPHICAL ENTRIES

American Heritage lists biographical entries, including the
person's vocation, date of birth, and date of death. For
example, to find out when Davy Crockett was born, and type
CROCKETT in the Word box. Choose Define or press Enter to
view the information.

GEOGRAPHICAL ENTRIES

You can use American Heritage to look up geographical
information. For example, to learn where Kitty Hawk is, choose
Lookup and type KITTY HAWK in the Word box. Choose Define or
press Enter to view the information.

UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES

American Heritage provides information about America's two-year
and four-year colleges and universities. For example, you can
find out what the enrollment count is at the University of
California at Santa Barbara.

To look up information about a university or college:

1 Choose CrossWords.

2 Type as much of the name as you can, using wild-card
characters. For example, type UNIVERSITY*BARBARA. A list of
   choices appears.

3 Select University...Barbara to view the information.

WORDHUNTER

It is best to use lowercase letters to enter words. Always enter
the AND, OR, and NOT operators in uppercase.

WordHunter looks for exact matches of the words you enter; it does
not check for other inflections of a word. If you don't find the
match you want, try changing one of the words. For example,
WordHunter finds no matches for "blue AND flower," but it finds 13
matches for "blue AND flowers."

LOCAL AREA NETWORKS

American Heritage can be installed on a local area network. For
licensing information and installation instructions, please call
WordStar International at 1-800-523-3520.
