INSTALLATION
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following are instructions for installing the driver in Windows 3.1.
It is installed through the Control Panel. This driver is an updated
version of the PostScript driver that ships with Windows 3.1, which adds
support for the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript printer. It will replace
any older version you have installed and will continue to support all
the PostScript printers supported by the older version.

1. Insert the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript Printer Drivers for Microsoft
Windows disk into a flexible disk drive.
2. Double-click the "Control Panel" icon in the Main window in the
    Program Manager window.
3. Double-click the "Printers" icon in the Control Panel window.
4. Click the "Add" button. The dialog box expands to display a list of
printers available in Windows 3.1. If you have never installed a
printer, this list box will fold out automatically for you.
5. Click "Install Unlisted or Updated Printer" at the top of the list
    of printers.
6. Click the "Install" button.
7. If your driver disk is in flexible disk drive A:, type the
following, then click the "OK" button:
      a:\win31drv
If your driver disk is in a different flexible disk drive,
    substitute the appropriate drive letter.
8. "HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript" should be highlighted. Click the
    "OK" button.
9. Click the "Connect" button.
10. Click the desired port in the "Ports" list box.
11. Change the "Transmission Retry" to "600" to ensure that timeouts
    do not occur.
12. Click the "OK" button.
13. Click the "Setup" button.
14. Click the "Options" button.
15. Click the "Advanced" button.
16. Clear the "Compress Bitmaps" check box by clicking it. (Clearing
this check box will cause your print files not to be compressed.
This should significantly decrease the time needed to print files with
    bitmapped graphics.)
17. Click the "OK" button.
18. Click the "OK" button.
19. Make any other desired changes to the driver options.
20. Click the "OK" button to exit the "HP LaserJet..." dialog box.
21. Click the "Set as Default Printer" button if you wish to make this
    printer the default printer.
22. Click the "Close" button.
23. Double-click the upper left-hand corner of the Control Panel window
    to close it.
24. Remove the driver disk from your flexible disk drive.

HP LASERJET 4/4M PRINTER & 300 DPI PRINTING
------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the HP LaserJet 4/4M printer, this driver is optimized for a printer
resolution of 600 dpi (dots per inch). If your printer is configured
for 300 dpi, optimize the driver for 300 dpi printing as follows:

1. Double-click the "Control Panel" icon in the Main window in the
    Program Manager window.
2. Double-click the "Printers" icon in the Control Panel window.
3. Click "HP LaserJet 4/4M Postscript on ..." in the "Installed
    Printers" list.
4. Click the "Setup" button.
5. Click the "Options" button.
6. Click the "Advanced" button.
7. Change the "Resolution (DPI)" setting to 300 by clicking the
    arrow and then clicking "300".
8. Change the "Halftone Frequency" to 60 by double-clicking the
"Halftone Frequency" box and typing "60" in place of 85.
9. Click the "OK" button.
10. Click the "OK" button.
11. Click the "OK" button.
12. Click the "Close" button.
13. Double-click the upper left-hand corner of the Control Panel window
    to close it.

To change the driver back to 600 dpi, repeat the same steps, setting
"Resolution (DPI)" to "600" and "Halftone Frequency" to "85".

Note that for the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript printer, making these
driver changes does not affect the printer's resolution setting. The
printer's resolution must be set at the printer's front panel.

DRIVER OPTIONS FOR HP LASERJET PRINTERS
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The driver's on-line Help facility describes driver options that are
common to all printers. This section describes driver options that are
unique to HP LaserJet printers, or which warrant additional explanation.

HP LASERJET 4/4M PAPER SOURCES: The driver's Paper Source selections
for the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript printer correspond to the printer's
paper sources as follows:

    DRIVER: PRINTER:
    Upper Tray .......... Multipurpose Tray
    Lower Tray .......... Paper Cassette
Manual Feed ......... Manually fed from the Multipurpose Tray
Envelope Feed ....... Optional Envelope Feeder
Auto Select ......... Printer's default tray for the selected
                          paper size
Large Capacity ...... Optional Lower Cassette

DUPLEX PRINTING - NONE, LONG EDGE OR SHORT EDGE: This option allows you
to enable duplex (two-sided) printing on HP LaserJet IIID and IIISi
printers. Selecting None causes the document to be printed one-sided.
Selecting Long Edge causes the document to be printed two-sided, ready
to be bound along the length (longer dimension) of the pages. Selecting
Short Edge causes the document to be printed two-sided, ready to be
bound along the width (shorter dimension) of the pages.

APPLICATION NOTES
------------------------------------------------------------------------

MS NOTEPAD AND MS CARDFILE: MS Notepad and MS Cardfile do not
print properly if resolution is set to 600 dpi in the driver's Advanced
Options dialog box. To print from these applications, temporarily set
the driver's resolution to 300 dpi, as described earlier in this README
file.

MS WORD FOR WINDOWS 2.0: To print envelopes using an accessory envelope
feeder with Word for Windows 2.0, you must configure your software to
use the feeder. Select "Tools" from your Word for Windows 2.0 menu bar,
then select "Options." In the "Options" dialog box, click the "Printer"
icon. In the "Envelope Options" box, click the "Printer's Envelope
Feeder has been Installed" box. Click "OK" to exit the "Options" box.

APPLICATIONS THAT IMPORT IMAGES: The placement of imported images
(such as EPS files) may be incorrect when printing in landscape
mode. To correct the problem, try adding the following setting to the
[ModelName,Port] section of the WIN.INI file (where ModelName is the
name of your PostScript Printer model, e.g., "HP LaserJet 4/4M
PostScript"):

    LandScapeOrient=270

APPLICATIONS THAT ASK FOR RESOLUTION, HALFTONE SCREEN FREQUENCY,
OR HALFTONE SCREEN ANGLE VALUES: Following are the values for
resolution, halftone screen frequency and halftone screen angle
that are built into the printer. If an application overrides the
printer's defaults with user-selectable values from the application's
menus, HP recommends trying the following values, depending on the
printer's front panel resolution setting:

    Resolution: 600 300
    Halftone Screen Frequency: 85 60
    Halftone Screen Angle: 45 45
