------------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTALLATION
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following are instructions for installing the driver in Windows 3.0.
It is installed through the Control Panel. Note that this driver will
replace any driver named PSCRIPT.DRV. This includes Microsoft's driver
for PostScript printers (Version 3.x) as well as older versions of
Adobe's Release 1 driver (versions 1.00.00 through 1.00.87), such as the
1.00.69 driver which is distributed by HP with the HP LaserJet
PostScript Cartridge Plus.

If you currently have Microsoft's driver for PostScript printers
(Version 3.x) installed, or don't know if you have it installed, start
at step 1 in the instructions. You will need to deinstall this
driver. This will not, however, cause you to lose support for any
PostScript printer models supported by that driver. The Adobe 1.00.88
driver will continue to support them.

If you currently have an older version of Adobe's Release 1 driver
(versions 1.00.00 through 1.00.87) installed, proceed to step 2 in the
instructions.

If you currently have no PostScript printer driver named PSCRIPT.DRV
installed, proceed to step 2 in the instructions.

1. If you currently have a Microsoft 3.x driver installed, or don't
    know if you do:
    a. Double-click the "Control Panel" icon in the Main window in
        the Program Manager window.
    b. Double-click the "Printers" icon in the Control Panel window.
    c. Does the "Installed Printers" list box contain any entries of
the form "PostScript Printer on..."? If no such entry exists,
        proceed to step h.
    d. Click the "Configure" button.
    e. Click the "Remove" button.
    f. Click the "Yes" button to remove the printer.
    g. Repeat steps c through f to remove additional printers.
        - - - -
    h. Click the "OK" button.
    i. Double-click the upper left-hand corner of the Control Panel
        window to close it.
    j. If you didn't find any printers to remove, proceed to step 2.
        - - - -
    k. Now remove any WPD (Windows Printer Description) files
you have installed for HP LaserJet printers. WPD files
provide printer feature information to PostScript printer
drivers. The driver you are about to install, however, has
support for HP LaserJet printers built in and is not compatible
with WPD files for HP LaserJet printers. WPD files for other
printers, however, should be compatible with the Adobe driver
and do not need to be removed. To remove WPD files for
HP LaserJet printers, you can use Windows File Manager to delete
the following files, if they exist, from your Windows directory:
            HP3SI523.WPD
            HPIID522.WPD
            HPIII522.WPD
            HPIIP522.WPD
            HP_3D522.WPD
Or you can type the following DOS command at the DOS prompt of
        your Windows directory:
            DEL HP???52?.WPD
2. Insert the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript Printer Drivers for
Microsoft Windows disk into a flexible disk drive.
3. Double-click the "Control Panel" icon in the Main window in the
    Program Manager window.
4. Double-click the "Printers" icon in the Control Panel window.
5. Click the "Add Printer" button. The dialog box expands to display
a list of printers available in Windows 3.0. If you have never
installed a printer, this list box will fold out automatically for
    you.
6. Scroll to the bottom of the list of printers and click "Unlisted
    Printer".
7. Click the "Install" button.
8. If your driver disk is in flexible disk drive A:, type the
following, then click the "OK" button:
      a:\win30drv
If your driver disk is in a different flexible disk drive,
    substitute the appropriate drive letter.
9. In the "Driver Files" list, click "pscript.drv".
10. Click the "OK" button.
11. If you already have a PostScript driver named PSCRIPT.DRV
installed, you may be asked: "A printer driver for this printer is
already on the system. Do you want to use the current driver or
install a new driver?" Click the "New" button.
12. "PostScript on None, Inactive" should now appear in the
    "Installed Printers" list box.
13. Click the "Configure" button.
14. Click the desired port in the "Ports" list box.
15. Change the "Transmission Retry" to "600" to ensure that timeouts do
    not occur.
16. Click the "Setup" button.
17. In the "Printer" list box, scroll to the appropriate HP LaserJet
PostScript printer name (e.g., "HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript"), and
    click it.
18. Make any desired changes to the driver options.
19. Click the "OK" button to exit the "PostScript Printer on ..." dialog
    box.
20. Click the "OK" button.
21. Click the "Active" button.
22. Double-click "PostScript on ..." if you wish to make this printer
    the default printer.
23. Click the "OK" button.
24. Double-click the upper left-hand corner of the Control Panel window
    to close it.
25. Remove the driver disk from your flexible disk drive.

PRINTING THE MANUAL
------------------------------------------------------------------------

A manual for this driver is located on the driver disk. The manual
contains information on installing and configuring the driver, selecting
driver options, using downloadable fonts, and more. Also located on the
driver disk is a DOS batch file which prints the manual. Note that
printing the manual requires 5Mb of disk space on a hard drive, but that
the disk space is used only temporarily and is freed up after the manual
has been printed. Also note that printing the manual takes
approximately 20 minutes, depending on the PC, printer and printer
connection you are using.

1. Make sure your printer is in PostScript or Automatic language
    switching mode.
2. Insert the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript Printer Drivers for Microsoft
Windows disk into a flexible disk drive.
3. Exit Windows and go to the DOS prompt of the flexible disk drive
that contains the driver disk. Then go to the WIN30DRV directory.
(Do not run DOS from Windows by using the DOS icon in the Program
Manager Main Group.) For example, if the driver disk is in the A:
drive, exit Windows and type the following:
        a: <press Enter>
        cd \win30drv <press Enter>
4. Run the MANUAL.BAT batch file, as follows:
        MANUAL <hard-drive> <output-port>
For example, if your hard drive with 5Mb of available disk space is
drive C and your PostScript printer port is LPT1:, type:
        MANUAL C: LPT1: <press Enter>
5. In approximately 20 minutes the manual will be printed. The manual
contains 24 numbered pages preceded by 4 unnumbered pages. Once the
manual has printed you can go back into Windows.

DRIVER OPTIONS FOR HP LASERJET PRINTERS
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The driver manual and the driver's on-line Help facility contain
information about driver options that are common to all printers. This
section describes driver options that are unique to HP LaserJet
printers, or which warrant additional explanation.

HP LASERJET 4/4M PAPER SOURCES: The driver's Paper Source selections
for the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript printer correspond to the printer's
paper sources as follows:

    DRIVER: PRINTER:
    Upper Tray .......... Multipurpose Tray
    Lower Tray .......... Paper Cassette
Envelope Feeder ..... Optional Envelope Feeder
Auto Select ......... Printer's default tray for the selected
                          paper size
Mixed Bins .......... First page from the Multipurpose Tray,
remaining pages from the Paper Cassette
Large Capacity ...... Optional Lower Cassette
Manual Feed ......... Manually fed from the Multipurpose tray

ORIENTATION: In addition to the standard orientations of Portrait
and Landscape, the driver provides Rotated Landscape. Rotated
Landscape pages are upside down as compared to Landscape pages, but
identical to landscape pages printed with PCL. The Rotated Landscape
option allows PostScript and PCL users sharing a printer to share
landscape envelopes and forms without requiring the users to physically
flip the forms or envelopes at the printer.

BINARY COMMUNICATIONS - SEND BINARY: This option provides faster
printing of bitmapped images on the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript printer
and the HP PostScript Cartridge Plus. Note that this option does not
affect applications that bypass the driver and generate their own
PostScript for bitmapped images.

RESOLUTION ENHANCEMENT - PRINTER DEFAULT, LIGHT, MEDIUM, DARK OR OFF:
This option allows you to adjust Resolution Enhancement on
HP LaserJet III and 4 family printers.

DUPLEX PRINTING - NONE, DUPLEX LONG EDGE OR DUPLEX SHORT EDGE: This
option allows you to enable duplex (two-sided) printing on
HP LaserJet IID, IIID, and IIISi printers. Selecting None causes
the document to be printed one-sided. Selecting Duplex Long Edge
causes the document to be printed two-sided, ready to be bound along
the length (longer dimension) of the pages. Selecting Duplex Short
Edge causes the document to be printed two-sided, ready to be bound
along the width (shorter dimension) of the pages.

USE COLOR: This driver allows you to check the Use Color check box,
even when printing to a monochrome printer. In most cases, this will
improve the output, particularly for gray-scale images. However, some
applications bypass the driver and generate their own PostScript. With
the Use Color check box checked, some applications attempt to send
color PostScript operators which fail when printing to monochrome
devices. If you experience problems printing color images to a
monochrome printer, clear the Use Color check box.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
APPLICATION NOTES
------------------------------------------------------------------------

MICROGRAFX DESIGNER: Micrografx Designer does not print reliably
through this driver. If you want to print from Designer, you can
use the PostScript driver supplied by Micrografx. Note that the
Micrografx driver may not support all the features of your printer.

MS WORD FOR WINDOWS 2.0: To print envelopes using an accessory envelope
feeder with Word for Windows 2.0, you must configure your software to
use the feeder. Select "Tools" from your Word for Windows 2.0 menu bar,
then select "Options." In the "Options" dialog box, click the "Printer"
icon. In the "Envelope Options" box, click the "Printer's Envelope
Feeder has been Installed" box. Click "OK" to exit the "Options" box.

APPLICATIONS THAT IMPORT IMAGES: The placement of imported
images (such as EPS files) may be incorrect when printing in
"Rotated Landscape" mode. To correct the problem, try changing
the orientation to "Landscape."

APPLICATIONS THAT ASK FOR RESOLUTION, HALFTONE SCREEN FREQUENCY,
OR HALFTONE SCREEN ANGLE VALUES: Following are the values for
resolution, halftone screen frequency and halftone screen angle
that are built into the printer. If an application overrides the
printer's defaults with user-selectable values from the application's
menus, HP recommends trying the following values, depending on the
printer's front panel resolution setting:

    Resolution: 600 300
    Halftone Screen Frequency: 85 60
    Halftone Screen Angle: 45 45
