UNDERSTANDING UNIVERSAL NAMING CONVENTION (UNC)

The Universal Naming Convention (UNC) is a method of accessing
network resources. UNC names are used primarily in MS Lan
Manager-based networks. The UNC path consists of a server name,
a volume name, and a path, \\servername\volume\path\path1\path2.

For example, on a Novell 3.11 network, you have a Server named
APPSERVER. On APPSERVER, you place all of your applications on
volume APPVOL. You can map each user's workstation to a drive
letter and APPSERVER\APPVOL:LOTUS\AMIPRO. With a UNC
path, any user can attach to APPSERVER using any drive letter
and access Ami Pro in \\appserver\appvol\lotus\amipro.

Node Install benefits the most from UNC path names because you only
need to specify the UNC path once, and all users have access to
Ami Pro. If you do not use UNC path names, you must specify
absolute path names and drive letters that exactly match each
user's map settings.

For more information about using UNC, refer to your network
documentation.

INSTALL OVERVIEW

OS/2 2.1 is highly reccommended for networked applications.

You can install Ami Pro for OS/2 on any Local Area Network (LAN)
compatible with OS/2 version 2.1. UNC path names are supported
for node path names. Anywhere you can specify a node path name, you
can specify a UNC path name. In addition, Install supports the
OS/2 High Performance File System (HPFS).

You can access online Help by pressing F1 or choosing Help.

Ami Pro offers a flexible network installation. During
installation on the network server, you can specify default paths for
each user's macros, documents, style sheets, SmartIcons, or clip
art. You can specify paths on the network or on the user's local
workstation. If you specify paths on the network, you can decide
if each user accesses common network directories or their
individual user directories. You can decide whether the user can
edit the paths.

You can configure each user differently. For example, you can
configure all users in the Sales Department to share common
directories on the network. You can configure all users in the
Marketing Department to share common style sheets and macros
directories on the network, but store other files locally.

During Install, you can specify the number of licenses you have
purchased for Ami Pro. Licenser determines how many concurrent
users can run Ami Pro from their workstations.

After installing Ami Pro on the network file server, there are
several methods of setting up each individual user's workstation
to run Ami Pro. You can use the Administrator's Node Install to
automate copying macros, documents, style sheets, SmartIcons, or
clip art to each user's node directory on the file server. You
can also instruct each user to run Node Install from their local
workstation and copy macros, documents, style sheets,SmartIcons,
or clip art from the network server.

6. Create a default path name template to use when adding user
     names to the Install List.

You can modify the template when you create the Install List
in order to create groups of user nodes with different paths.

You can choose Reset to restore the default settings.

Specify System Administrator Paths as they appear to the
     system administrator.

If you specify UNC path names, you do not have to specify
          User Mapped Paths.

You can use the ? character to specify a wildcard for a
portion of the path name. When you create the Install
List, you can specify the subdirectory to use in place of
the wildcard. For example, you can specify a path of
f:\user\?\amipro. When you add George Bailey to the
Install List, you can specify gbailey as the replacement
for ?. When you add Amanda Wingfield to the Install List,
you can specify awingfield as the replacement for ?.

Specify Users Mapped Paths as they appear on the user's
     workstation.

If you specify UNC path names for System Administrator
Paths, you can delete the path names from the template.

     the Install List.

11. Choose Start Install.

Administrator's Node Install creates node copies of Ami Pro
for all users in the Install List.

NOTE: Administrator's Node Install does not stop or display
any error information. You should view the ERRORLOG.TXT file
in the INSTALL directory to determine if Administrator's Node
Install successfully created nodes for all users.

A message displays when Install is complete.

12. Choose OK.

13. Choose Save and Exit from the Main Menu.

14. You can instruct each user to run Icon Install to create the
Ami Pro icon on their desktop, or you can include Icon
     Install in a login script.

Icon Install checks for an existing Ami Pro icon. If an icon
is found, Icon Install exits immediately and does not create
     another icon.

You can run Icon Install with a "-n" option if you do
not want to check for an existing icon.

You can run Icon Install with a "-x" option if you do not
want to add an icon, but you want Icon Install to create
template files and update system settings.

You can give users the following instructions:

     1. Start OS/2.

     2. Open an OS/2 Command Prompt Window.

     3. Type cd\amipro\install and press ENTER.

INSTALLING AMI PRO ON SPECIFIC NETWORKS

Contact Banyan Vines for an update to the OS/2 redirector before
installing to the Server. Banyon Vines does not support UNC.

IBM LAN Server 3.0 requires ServicePak - IP07001 be installed
on workstations prior to running Ami Pro for OS/2.

Novell supports HPFS file names only if you are running the OS/2 Name
Service.

HINTS & TIPS

Install copies READNET.TXT to the \amipro\install directory
so you can use it without accessing the original program disks.

The Administrator's Node Install creates a file called
USERLIST.TXT. You can use any text editor to modify the
USERLIST.TXT file. You can modify existing users, add new users,
or delete users.

NOTE: Administrator's Node Install always installs to all users
in USERLIST.TXT. If you wish to install in groups and maintain
the groups for future upgrades, you can move or rename this file.

If users cannot access shared documents on the network,
make sure they have Read-Write-Create-Delete-Attribute permissions
to the directory.

If users receive errors that Ami Pro cannot find style sheets
and no path names display in the User Setup Paths dialog box,
make sure their Ami Pro icon Settings are correct. Verify that
the Path and file name setting is the path to the AMIPRO.EXE
file on the network. The Parameters setting should have i
equal the path name to the user's INI files. For example,
-i="f:\user\gbailey".

To create a distribution server on the network, copy all files
from the Ami Pro Install diskettes to one directory on the
network file server. If you create separate directories for
each disk, Install prompts you to change disks.

Install creates hidden files to prevent users from overwriting
files during Node Install. If you create other directories for
users to share, and do not want these directories updated
during Node Install, copy the appropriate files.

For example, for a document directory, copy or create the file
"DOCS.DIR," for macros "MACROS.DIR," for styles "STYLES.DIR,"
etc.

If you need to update Ami Pro for OS/2, install the update on the
server, then instruct users to run INSTALL.EXE from the
\amipro\install directory.

Whenever you specify a user directory for documents and macros,
you can specify multiple path names. Only the first path in the
list displays in the list boxes, but Ami Pro searches all paths
listed for a specified file. For example,
c:\amipro.os2\docs;\\bigserver\sys\lotus\company.doc;g:\thay\toddsdocs.
