Ofoto(TM) for Windows(TM), Version 1.02 September 2, 1993

Installing Ofoto
----------------

Before installing Ofoto be sure you have followed the manufacturer's
instructions for installing both your scanner board and the software
supplied with it.

Note: If you use anything other than default settings for your board
(i.e. if you change the board's port address), you may need to modify
your config.sys file or your Ofoto configuration. See the scanner
information section at the end of the Readme.

For Ofoto installation instructions, see the "Installing Ofoto for
Windows" card included in your package.

Ofoto runs best when your CONFIG.SYS file sets Files to at least 40
and Buffers to at least 10. When you install Ofoto, the Installer
checks these settings in your CONFIG.SYS file. If your Files or Buffer
settings are lower, you can choose to have the Installer change them
automatically.

If you choose not to have the Installer automatically update your
CONFIG.SYS file, you must update the file manually. To find out what
changes to make, refer to the file CONFIG.OFO in your Ofoto
directory. CONFIG.OFO is placed in your Ofoto directory only when
you choose not to have the Installer automatically update your
CONFIG.SYS file.

Exporting a calibration
-----------------------
Calibrations are stored in the Ofoto directory in files with a ".CAL"
extension. The Ofoto.ini file defines what calibration names are
associated with what ".CAL" files. Under the "[ofotoCalibrations]"
heading there is a definition line for each custom calibration. To
take the calibration to another computer, copy both the ".CAL" file
and the line describing that calibration from the Ofoto.ini file to
the other computer. Put the ".CAL" in the Ofoto directory and update
the Ofoto.ini file with the line describing the calibration.

Installing a new scanner
------------------------
If you wish to install a new scanner, follow these steps:

1. Carefully read the manufacturer instructions for your scanner and
install the new scanner with the supplied software.
2. Run Ofoto and select "Run Scanner Setup, Try Again" from the
Scanner Initialization window.
3. Select "Add scanner" and insert Disk 1.
4. Select the correct scanner from the list and select O.K.
You will need to follow these steps even when changing between
different models in the same family of scanners (i.e. the HP ScanJet
IIc to the HP ScanJet IIp) in order to attain the highest quality
images from each model scanner.

Printing on a PostScript printer
--------------------------------
IMPORTANT: If you are printing from a PostScript printer, you must
select the correct printer setup options in Windows 3.0 and 3.1.

For Windows 3.0:
1. Open the Control Panels icon
2. Open Printers
3. Click Configure
4. Set Device Not Seleted Time-out to 999 and Transmission Retry
Time-out to 999.
5. Click Setup
6. Click Options
7. Set Job Time-out to 0 seconds

For Windows 3.1:
1. Open the Control Panels icon
2. Open Printers
3. Click Connect
4. Set Device Not Seleted Time-out to 999 and Transmission Retry
Time-out to 999.
5. Click Network
6. Click Options
7. Set Job Time-out to 0 seconds

Printing on an Apple LaserWriter IIg
------------------------------------
To print with PhotoGrade quality on an Apple LaserWriter IIg that has
5MB of RAM, you must set Paper Size to "Letter Small" in Windows.

If you see an "Invalid Gray Chart" message
------------------------------------------
When scanning a gray chart to calibrate Ofoto for your printer, Ofoto
may display an "Invalid Gray Chart" message. This occurs when some
portion of the gray chart cannot be scanned because the chart is
placed incorrectly either on the page or on the scanner.

The chart should be centered on the page with at least a one inch
white margin around the edge of the paper. Consult the manual for
the application used to print the chart to see how to do this.

To correctly place the chart on the scanner:

1. Check the Ofoto document window to see which portion of the chart
was not scanned (the outermost black border should be scanned by the
first pass).
2. Move the chart so that the outermost black border will be scanned.
3. Scan the chart again.

Using Ofoto with Ventura Publisher 3.0
--------------------------------------
Ventura Publisher 3.0 inverts 8-bit Ofoto images. If you experience
this problem, you may wish to upgrade your Ventura Publisher software.
Ventura Publisher version 4.0 works properly with Ofoto images.

Using Ofoto with Aldus Freehand and PageMaker 4.0
-------------------------------------------------
Aldus Freehand and PageMaker 4.0 do not accept 8-bit PCX images. To
import Ofoto images into Aldus Freehand and PageMaker 4.0 use the
TIFF file format when saving images in Ofoto.

Opening a non-PostScript image
------------------------------
If you scan and save an image using a non-postscript calibration,
Ofoto scans the image at 8 bits but saves it as a 1-bit halftoned
image. Consequently, when you open the saved image, a 1-bit image is
displayed and thus will appear as if it contains "cross-hatch"
patterns.

Calibrating for a Printer that is not listed
--------------------------------------------
If you are calibrating Ofoto for a printer that is not listed in the
Scan Controls Calibration window, consult your printer manual for the
DPI (dots per inch) of your printer. Then, follow these steps:

1. Select Calibrate/Create Gray Chart
2. Base the calibration on any printer. If you know of one similar to
your printer, select it.
3. Select Options, change the printer dpi field to the specified dpi
for your printer, and select a name.
4. Select Print Gray Chart and O.k.
5. Once you scan in the printed gray chart, your new calibration will
be listed for your printer in the Scan Controls.

If your filenames do not appear in the file save window
-------------------------------------------------------
If your filenames are missing from the file selection list when
saving a file, check the shade of gray you have selected for the
window text. Files listed in the selection box are grayed out when
saving a file. If the shade of gray you have selected is the same
shade as the grayed out text, your filenames will not appear.

If you see a "Scanner communication error" message
--------------------------------------------------
Follow the directions in the error message. Additionally, some models
of scanners need to be powered on before the computer boots to allow
the scanner driver to load properly.

Scanner configuration summary
-----------------------------
This section summarizes the configuration information provided by each
scanner manufacturer and contains some additional information about
configuring for use with Ofoto. If you follow the manufacturer's
instructions for installing the scanner hardware and software and then
install Ofoto this information should not be needed, but it may help if
you have problems getting Ofoto to work with the scanner the first time.
