VISIO HOME README.TXT
----------------

This file answers common Visio questions and addresses some
printer and other hardware issues. Additional information
is available in "Using Visio," the Visio Release Notes, and
from Shapeware Technical Support. For more information
about Shapeware Technical Support, please see Appendix C of
"Using Visio."

FULL VERSUS SHORT MENUS
-----------------------
The first time you start Visio, some commands, such as
Import and Export, are not visible. To see these commands,
choose Full Menus from the Window menu. Chapter 8 of
"Using Visio" tells you whether a particular command is
available under short menus, full menus, or both.

PRINT TILING AND PAGE SCALING
-----------------------------
Visio gives you the option of defining the printed page
independently of the drawing page. This means that you can
create a drawing measuring 11" by 17" and print it tiled
over several 8 1/2" by 11" pieces of paper, reduce it to fit
on one piece, or enlarge it to fit over as many pieces as
you like. For details, see Chapter 5, "Creating and printing
drawing pages," in Using Visio.

NON-BREAKING JUSTIFYING SPACEBAND
---------------------------------
Visio supports a non-breaking justifying spaceband. To use this
feature, press Num Lock to enable the numeric keypad, hold down
the Alt key, then on the numeric keypad, type 018.

ADDING SHAPES TO STENCILS
-------------------------
You cannot add shapes to a stencil that has been opened as read
only. If the stencil name in the title bar has brackets around
it, the stencil was opened as read only. When you open Visio
templates, the stencil that is part of the template automatically
opens as read only. For a step-by-step guide to how to add shapes
to stencils, see Chapter 6, "Planning for future drawings," in
Using Visio. For details about the different ways to open
stencils, see Chapter 1, "Getting started with Visio," or see
the Open entry in Chapter 8, "Command and tool Reference" in
Using Visio.

USING OBJECT LINKING AND EMBEDDING WITH WORDPERFECT FOR
WINDOWS VERSION 5.2
-------------------------------------------------------
If you place a Visio drawing in a WordPerfect for Windows
Version 5.2 document, you may want to use the Select Printer
command in WordPerfect to select a Windows printer driver
(rather than a driver that came with WordPerfect) in order
to ensure the best print quality.

PRINTING TIP - SETTING UP YOUR DRAWING
--------------------------------------
To ensure the best printing results in Visio, before you draw,
choose the printer that will be your final output device from
the Printer Setup dialog box. Changing printers after you
have drawn something but before you print it can sometimes
cause the line breaks in text to be different from what you
might expect. Line breaks can vary from printer to printer
because letter widths vary from printer to printer.

USING THE HP LASERJET III PRINTER
---------------------------------
If you use the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III printer driver,
version 31.3.89, and get unexpected results when you print text
with TrueType fonts, try enabling the Print TrueType as
Graphics option. To enable this setting, choose Print Setup
from the File menu, click on the Options button, and check the
Print TrueType as Graphics box. There is a new version 2.1
driver for the LaserJet III that works with the Universal printer
driver version 3.1.2. You can order this updated driver from
either Microsoft or Hewlett-Packard. For more information, see
the Visio Release Notes.

PRINTING ROTATED TEXT USING THE PRINT TRUETYPE AS GRAPHICS OPTION
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If you experience unexpected results when you print rotated text
using an HP LaserJet or other PCL printer, try printing with the
Print TrueType as Graphics box checked. To enable this setting,
choose Print Setup from the File menu, click on the Options
button, and check the Print TrueType as Graphics box.

Alternatively, you can add the TextBaselineAlignment=0 line to
your VISIO.INI file. See the "Using the Microsoft(R) Windows(TM)
Printing System" section below.

USING THE MICROSOFT(R) WINDOWS(TM) PRINTING SYSTEM
--------------------------------------------------
If you have trouble printing rotated text using the Microsoft
Windows Printing System product, use Notepad or another text
editor to add the following line to the [Application] section
of your VISIO.INI file:

     TextBaselineAlignment=0

Unless you are running VISIO over a network, the VISIO.INI file
can be found in the same directory as your VISIO.EXE file, usually
\VISIO. When running VISIO from the network, VISIO.INI is placed
in your Windows directory, usually \WINDOWS.

USING VISIO AND YOURWAY(TM)
---------------------------
If you use Prisma Software's YourWay software and use the Quick
Menu program, you may experience a problem when Visio is minimized
or another application is brought to the foreground. A workaround
for this problem is to remove the Quick Menu icon from the Start
Up group in the Program Manager.

COLOR PRINTING WITH THE HP DESKJET 500C AND 550C PRINTERS
---------------------------------------------------------
When you print in Color mode on an HP DeskJet 500C or 550C with
a version 3.0 printer driver, TrueType fonts might print as large
black bars across the page. Hewlett-Packard is aware of the
problem and is working on a solution.

In the meantime, there is a simple workaround. In Visio, choose
Print Setup from the File menu. Choose the HP DeskJet 500C or
550C. Click Options and More, then change the Dithering from
standard to anything else. If you would like to make this change
permanently, repeat this process in the Windows Control Panel.

INVENTORY ADD-ON
----------------
When running the Inventory Add-on (and displaying to your screen),
be sure to exit Notepad before closing the Inventory Add-on
window to avoid unpredictable behavior after returning to VISIO.

ENHANCING PERFORMANCE
---------------------
For general information on enhancing your system's performance,
see Chapter 14, "Optimizing Windows," in your Windows manual.

Visio performs certain functions faster when a floating point
math co-processor is available and enabled.

DISPLAYING AND INSTALLING TRUETYPE FONTS
----------------------------------------
If fonts in a dialog box don't display properly, check to
see that your TrueType fonts are installed in the Control
Panel. To check for TrueType fonts:

-Open the Main program group in the Windows Program Manager.
-Double-click on the Control Panel icon.
-Double-click the Fonts icon.
-Make sure that (at a minimum) all the TrueType fonts that
ship with Windows 3.1 appear in the list of installed fonts.

To add TrueType fonts, if needed:

-Click on the Add button.
-If no fonts are displayed, select the System subdirectory
from the Windows main directory. A list of TrueType fonts
 will appear.
-Highlight TrueType font(s) to be added and click OK.

ZEOS 486-33 CPU & FLOATING POINT EXCEPTION
------------------------------------------
The Award BIOS 3.10, 452-005-01, found in some ZEOS 486-33
machines and possibly in other computer makes and models as
well, does not correctly handle floating point exceptions.
As a result, floating point errors will cause these machines
to hang (that is, to stop responding). Floating point exceptions
are most likely to be the result of a Union or Fragment
operation. If Visio displays an error message telling you that
a floating point exception has occurred, try to save your work
(you may not be able to), then close Visio and Windows, and
reboot your computer.

To correct this problem with the Award BIOS 3.10, 452-005-1, an
updated BIOS is required. ZEOS owners can contact ZEOS Technical
Support at 612.633.7337 voice, 800.228.5390 toll-free, or
612.633.4607 FAX. Owners of other machines can contact the
manufacturer of their machine.
