============= I. INSTALLING WILLMAKER 5.0 FOR DOS ===============

  A. STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

WillMaker 5.0 for DOS comes with two installation disks,
labeled "WillMaker 5 for DOS Install Disk, and "Disk 2".

To install WillMaker 5 for DOS:

     1. Insert Install Disk in drive A: or dive B:

     2. Type A: <Enter> if you inserted it into the A drive or
B: <Enter> if you inserted it into the B: drive.

     3. Now type INSTALL and press <Enter>.

     The installation process will proceed.

After about a minute or so, you will be prompted to
insert disk #2. The installer will say it is looking for
the file "WM.NP2." Insert disk #2 at this point and press
<Enter>. The installation should continue and be finished in
     another half minute.

  B. PROBLEMS YOU MAY ENCOUNTER DURING INSTALLATION

PROBLEM: You insert Disk #2 and nothing happens.

SOLUTION(S): First, check to make sure that you have
     inserted disk #2.

If disk #2 is installed, chances are the problem is that
the installer is searching your hard drive for the next
installation file, (called WM.NP1). This will happen if
you skipped step 2 of the STEP-BY-STEP instructions above.

In this case, make sure that the installer is
looking on the correct drive -- A: or B: -- depending on
which drive you are installing from. (The drive that the
installer is searching is displayed on the last line.

If the last line says "C:\wm.np2" then move
the cursor under the "C" and replace it with the letter
of the drive you are installing from. Then press <Enter>.

The installation should continue at this point.

To avoid this problem in the future, be sure
to type A: <Enter> or B: <Enter> BEFORE you type
     INSTALL.

============== II. CONVERTING WILLMAKER 4 FILES ================

WillMaker 5 for DOS can convert your existing WillMaker data
file created with WillMaker 4 for DOS.

  A. CONVERTING DURING THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

When you installed WillMaker 5 for DOS, you were asked
whether you wanted the installer to search your hard disk
and convert any WillMaker 4 files.

If you answered "yes," the installer searched your hard disk
for any files called WILLDATA.WMK. Any files with this name
were converted, renamed, and saved in your WillMaker
     directory.
NOTE: If you ever copied and renamed the WILLDATA.WMK file
while using WillMaker 4 (for example, to make another will
without erasing the original), these renamed copies were not
converted in the install process. You will have to convert
     them after the installation.

  B. CONVERTING WM4 FILES AFTER YOU HAVE INSTALLED WM5

When you are ready to convert your WillMaker 4 files, follow
     these steps:

     1. At the DOS prompt, change to the WillMaker 5 directory.
(If you followed the default installer directory name, you
     would type:

           CD\WM5

     2. Once you are in the WillMaker 5 directory, you can type
CONVERT, a space, then path and file name of the file you
     want to convert.

For example, to convert a file called WILLDATA.WMK that is
in the "WM" directory of your C drive you would type:

           CONVERT C:\WM\WILLDATA.WMK

If the file was on a floppy disk in your A drive, you
     would type:

           CONVERT A:\WILLDATA.WMK

The conversion will only take a second or two. The converted
file is saved in your WillMaker 5 directory with a new name,
consisting of the first name of the person whose name is in
the will, followed by a .WM5 extension.

Thus, if the WILLDATA.WMK file was the will of John Doe, the
new file will be saved as JOHN.WM5. If a file of that name
already exists, the name will be JOHN1.WM5.

For most WillMaker 4 users will only have ONE WillMaker data
file, called WILLDATA.WMK. The other *.WMK files in your
WillMaker 4 directory are probably NOT data files -- unless you
intentionally copied and renamed your WILLDATA.WMK to
a different name with a .WMK extension.

  C. AFTER YOU CONVERT YOUR WILLMAKER 4 FILES

When you start the WillMaker 5 application, your converted
WillMaker 4 file(s) will show up in your "portfolio list."
See the user manual for more details.

When you open one of these converted files, WillMaker may
show that the status of your will is "partially complete" or
"not started" even if you have previously completed it.
Don't worry, none of your data has been lost; it is just
WillMaker's way of telling you that you will need to review
each screen of your will by walking through it before you
can print it out. Walking through it in this way will
update your state's UTMA information, if applicable, and
allow you to name a "Property Guardian" if you have minor
children--an option that was not available in WillMaker 4.

  D. PROBLEMS YOU MAY HAVE DURING CONVERSION

     -----

PROBLEM: Message "Invalid fields detected: use -F to
               convert"

EXPLANATION: You have tried to convert a file that is
not a WillMaker data file. You can type -F before the file
name to force the converter to convert this file, but it
will probably be unusable. The only WillMaker files that
will not convert are those that are not started.

     -----

PROBLEM: Message "Premature end of file"

EXPLANATION: You have tried to convert a non existent
file or a file that is not a WillMaker 4 file.

SOLUTION: Check that you have spelled the file name
properly and have typed the correct drive and path.

For example, if you are trying to convert a file
called "JOHN.WMK" in a the "WM" directory on your C
     drive, you should type:

          CONVERT C:\WM\JOHN.WMK

================== III. PAGE SETUP OPTIONS ===================

Be conservative on your choice of font and spacing.

Generally, you should not need to change any of the default
page margins for your documents. In some cases you may
have to change the page margins so that the signature
page contains some language of the document, and
that the witness lines all appear on the same page.

====== IV. RESTORING DEFAULT COLORS AND OTHER SETTINGS =======

The first time you run WillMaker 5, a file called WM.INI
is created. This file holds your color settings, page
     setup settings, etc.

If you want to reset WillMaker to its default settings,
delete the WM.INI file from your WillMaker 5 directory.
It will re-create itself when you start the program again.

==================== V. MANUAL ERRATA ========================

WillMaker 5 for DOS File List

     readme.txt this file
     wm.exe the WillMaker application
     wm5.res the WillMaker program data
     convert.exe the WillMaker conversion utility
                       (for WillMaker 4 files)

=================== V. TROUBLESHOOTING ======================

If you have trouble running WillMaker, be sure to consult
the user manual, especially Part 5, "Problems Running
     WillMaker."

Here are a few additional situations that may arise that did
not make it into the manual.

     -----
PROBLEM: Confirmation boxes do not appear on some multiple
choice screens in the Living Will module and the Final
     Arrangements module.

EXPLANATION: Confirmation boxes were eliminated as
redundant on such screens, because seeing the check-mark
serves as confirmation of your choice before you press the
     Enter key.

     -----
PROBLEM: Messages flash too fast to be read on some 486 or
     Pentium based computers.

EXPLANATION: These messages are intended to inform users
of slower computers that WillMaker is busy processing
information. Don't worry about missing important information
on these messages. Generally they consist of information
like "loading file" or "assembling document." If you really
want to read them, turn off the "turbo" switch on your 486
(if you have one). This will probably make your computer
slow enough to give you a chance to read the messages.

     -----
PROBLEM: I mistakenly typed in a number in the STATE
screen, WillMaker confirmed my answer that I had chosen a
     state.

EXPLANATION: WillMaker 4 had users enter their state by
pressing a number -- Alabama was number 1 for example. In
WillMaker 5, we made entering your state easier by allowing
you to enter your postal code. To ensure compatibility with
WillMaker 4 data, it is still possible to enter your state
by pressing a number--if you care to count through
the list to figure out which number your state is.

     -----
PROBLEM: When I opened my converted WillMaker 4 file, it
listed my will as "Not Started" or "Partially Complete."

EXPLANATION: Don't worry. None of your data has been
lost; it is just WillMaker's way of telling you that you
will need to review each screen of your will by walking
through it before you can print it out. Walking through
each screen in this way will update your state's UTMA
information, if applicable, and allow you to name a
"Property Guardian" if you have minor children--an option
that was not available in WillMaker 4.

     -----
PROBLEM: When I leave a screen blank in the Final
Arrangements module, it displays my answer as "No
preference." when I return to that screen.

EXPLANATION: In the Final Arrangements module, you are
instructed to leave an entry blank if you have "No
preference." In order to make the final document print
properly, the actual words "No preference." are inserted as
your answer for that screen, and this is what will print in
     your final document.

     -----
PROBLEM: I named my exported text file as JOHN.DOE and
     it was saved as JOHN.TXT

EXPLANATION: WillMaker saves all text files with a .TXT
extension. This enables users to more easily load the
text files with word processors that look for a ".TXT"
extension when listing files. It is also done for the
convenience of users who have configured Windows or the MS
DOS DOSSHELL to automatically open a .TXT file by double-
clicking on it. In the example above, the user should name
his file JOHNDOE and it WillMaker will save it as
     JOHNDOE.TXT.

     -----
PROBLEM: Hash marks - "/////" - appear at the bottom of a
     page

EXPLANATION: As you view your Will, Healthcare Directions
or Final Arrangements on screen or on paper, you may notice
that some pages have hash marks - "/////" - at the bottom of
     a page.

This is done for your protection.

It is good practice to have your signature appear on the
same page as at least some of the actual language of the
document you are signing. Also, all of the witness'
signatures should appear on the same page. To ensure that
this happens, WillMaker uses built-in reference points in
the document to mark off text which must be printed on the
same page, sometimes forcing text to be printed on the next
     page.

Accordingly, a new page may start even though the
previous page is not completely full. When this happens,
WillMaker automatically inserts hash marks in the remaining
space on the previous page to ensure that no one can later
fill in the blank space after you have signed the document.
The hash marks also indicate that more text follows on the
     next page.

     -----
PROBLEM: I changed the name in my will from "Felix
Slatkin" to "Mary Poppins" but my portfolio name remains
     "Felix Slatkin."

EXPLANATION: Your portfolio name can be changed only from
the list of documents screen (press F3 then F8 to get
there). Although this name is inserted as the default name
the first time you create any of the three documents in your
portfolio, it is not a "global" name. Each document can have
a different name. Thus if you change your name in your will,
it will not be changed in your final arrangements or your
     healthcare directions.
