2 Tips and Known Problems

1. System Requirements
======================
To install and use Microsoft Word Assistant, you will need:
o A personal computer running MS-DOS 3.0 or later.
o Windows version 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, or Windows for
  Pen Computing.
o A personal computer using a 286, 386, or higher processor.
o 4 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM).
o A hard disk with 4MB available.
o An EGA or higher-resolution monitor.
o Microsoft Word version 6.0 build 2117 or greater. Build 2117
  is the corporate Beta release.

2. Tips and Known Problems
==========================

Font Selector Tips
------------------
o You can customize Font Selector (FS) through its initialization
file, FONTSEL.INI. Under the [Settings] section of the file,
  make these adjustments:
Tab=AsFont (or Tab=Normal, to set the default view)
AsFontSize=18 (set the size of fonts displayed in As Font view)
NormalSize=10 (set the size of fonts displayed in Normal view).
Under the [Misc] section of the file, make this adjustment:
button=1 (put the FS button on the Standard toolbar).

o The Font Selector status bar shows an icon to the left of the font name.
The icon shows whether a font is a TrueType font or a printer font.
This information can be useful if you have multiple fonts of the
  same name installed.

o The FS database file, FONTTOOL.DBF, is built during initial setup.
If the file becomes corrupted or is accidentally deleted, follow
these steps to rebuild it: 1) Exit Word, 2) Delete FONTTOOL.DBF from
your Windows directory, and 3) Restart Word. The next time you start
Font Selector, it will automatically rebuild its database.

Font Selector Known Problems
----------------------------
o If you have many fonts installed (upwards of 256), you might experience
a GP Fault as Font Selector builds its database file, FONTTOOL.DBF,
during Setup. Try uninstalling fonts (down to 200 or fewer) using the
Control Panel. Then run the Setup program again. This problem will be
  resolved before the product ships.

Special Paper Tips
------------------
o For best results with Special Paper (SP), create your Word document,
then apply an SP design and adjust formatting just before printing.

o To improve performance, add the following setting to Word's
initialization file, WINWORD6.INI: bitmapmemory=0. Windows, rather
than Word, will save the SP design in cache so the design draws faster
in the document and in the SP dialog box.

o To delete an SP design, follow these steps: 1) Drag the mouse to the
left edge of the document (the cursor will change from Word's insertion
point to a four-headed arrow), 2) Click to select the design, and
  3) Choose Cut or Clear from the Edit menu (or press the Delete key).

o When you insert an SP design in a document, you're actually
inserting both a design and a text box to contain the design. The
text box is the same dimension as the design. In only a few
situations will you see or work with the text box. If you are working
in your document and press the Ctrl+PageUp key, the insertion point
appears at the top-left corner of the page, which is Special Paper's
text box. If you select an SP design and press the Backspace key,
the design will be deleted but the insertion point will be moved
  to Special Paper's text box.

o The insertion point must be in the main text area before you can
insert an SP design. To move the insertion point to the main text area,
click in the grey area beyond the right or left edge of the Word
  document.

o If you accidentally type some text in Special Paper's text box,
just delete it by following these steps: 1) Press Ctrl+PageUp
to position the insertion point in the SP text box, 2) Select the
text to be deleted, and 3) Choose Cut or Clear from the Edit menu
  (or press the Delete key).

o If you have inserted a design into your document and then choose Print,
SP will ask if you'd like to print a proof copy of the page with
a black-and-white copy of the SP design and your text. If you
choose the Yes button, SP will turn on Word's Hidden Text option so the
design will print. The Hidden Text option will remain on until you turn
it off (use Options from the Tools menu) or until you print your document
and choose the No button when SP asks if you want to print a draft copy.

o If you save a document as a template with an SP design on it, the
design will be saved as hidden text. If you want a black-and-white copy
of the design to print with your text, you will need to make the design
not hidden before you print the document: 1) Select the design, and
  2) Using Font from the Format menu, deselect the Hidden Text option.
Alternatively, you can attach the SPCLPPR.SPT template to the document,
but don't make it global. When you print the document, SP will then
ask you if you want to print a copy of the design and the text.

o Pasting text into a page that has a SP design may cause the SP design
to move to the following page. That's because the design is anchored
to the text, which in turn is anchored to a paragraph mark. Pasting other
text may push the paragraph mark to the following page. One workaround
is to delete the design, and then insert it again. Another workaround
is to cut text from the first page until the design moves back to its
  original location.

Special Paper Known Problems
----------------------------
o If you insert multiple designs on top of each other, you will see only
the last inserted design. But for each additional design, you will be
depleting memory further. If you try to place an additional design on
your page, SP will display a warning that you already have a drawing
object on the page and ask if you want to continue. You should choose
the No button, and then delete the current design before inserting
another. If you insert too many designs in a document (whether on the
same or different pages), Word can run out of memory and get very slow.
If you continue putting designs into your document, Word may even crash.

Font Assistant Known Problems
-----------------------------
o The Font Assistant (FA) window can be moved so far off the screen that
you can't get to it anymore. This can happen if you move the window far
to the left, and then close the Font Sample area (Ctrl+F). To recover, exit
FA (use the Task Manager or exit Windows), and then delete FAST.INI,
the FA initialization file, from your Windows directory. When you next
start FA, it will position itself in its default location near the
  middle of your screen.

o If you deactivate the <all fonts> group, but leave one or more other
groups active. This change does not register when you exit FA.
The next time you start FA, the Fonts in Active Group(s) and Font
Samples windows will show all fonts. A workaround is to activate,
then deactivate, the <all fonts> group. This problem will be fixed
  before the product ships.

Forms Tips
----------
o If you open a document using WAF_WEEK.DOT and immediately print it,
the dates next to the days of the week will not print. To make them
print, tab to or click any field (except the first one). Once
you do, Word will update the dates.

Forms Known Problems
--------------------
o If you use the Control Panel to change your International settings,
you must manually change the form fields (e.g., change a date field from
  mm/dd/yy to dd/mm/yy).

Fonts Known Problems
--------------------
o Some video drivers do not correctly display italicized fonts such
as Palace Script, but the font will print fine. On screen, the right side
may look clipped. Change your video driver to make this problem go away.

Setup Tips
----------
o You must have Word version 6 installed before you can install or uninstall
Word Assistant. To install Word Assistant, run Setup, and select the
components you want to install. To uninstall Word Assistant, run Setup
again, which automatically goes into Maintenance Mode, from which you can
  select the Remove All option.

Setup Known Problems
--------------------
o If you type an extremely long name (e.g., 30 characters), Font
Assistant may crash when you start it. This will be fixed before the
  product ships.

o Setup will not remove the TrueType fonts it installed.

Tips for Customizing Word
-------------------------
Because Word Assistant is an add on, there is no way to make Word Basic
recognize commands not internal to Word.

If you want to create your own custom macro to call Font Selector, you
need to add the following line to your macro.

Declare Sub FontToolpopup Lib "fonttool.wll"()

This declares the function FontToolpopup, so it can be called from a
Word Basic macro.

If you want to create your own custom macro to call Special Paper, you
need to add the following line to your macro.

Declare Sub SpecialPaper Lib "spclppr.wll"()

The below example macro, calls both the Special Paper dialog, and the
Font Selector Dialog.

Declare Sub FontToolpopup Lib "fonttool.wll"()
Declare Sub SpecialPaper Lib "spclppr.wll"()
Sub MAIN
FontToolpopup
SpecialPaper
End Sub
