About the QuickVerse 2.0 Installation Disk
************************************************************

There may be a disk labelled "QuickVerse 2.0 Installation
Disk" included in your copy of QuickVerse for Windows. It is
NOT required during installation of QuickVerse for Windows.
You may use this disk at a later time to install additional
QuickVerse add-on products.

If your copy of QuickVerse for Windows is the UPGRADE from
the DOS version of QuickVerse, you do not receive a
"QuickVerse 2.0 Installation Disk." You should already have
a copy of this disk with your original QuickVerse 2.0 (for
DOS) product.

************************************************************
                   New Features
************************************************************

This section describes new features that have been added to
QuickVerse for Windows since the original User's Guide was
printed. None, some, or all of these features may be
documented in your User's Guide, as the User's Guide is
periodically updated to include changes such as these.

Translation Selection for Copy/File/Print Passage
-------------------------------------------------
The ability to select a translation to copy, file, or print
from has been added when Copy Passage, File Passage, or
Print Passage is selected. After selecting one of these
items, you'll be able to select not only the passage to
output, but also the translation to use. If a window
containing the Bible translation is not already open,
QuickVerse will automatically open a new Bible window.

Additional Configuration Information Kept in Desktop
----------------------------------------------------
The QuickVerse desktop file also stores display
configuration information such as the font name and point
size, whether to display with boldface, italics, and red
text, the word format for displaying Hebrew and Greek
"words" and the status of window synchronization. When the
desktop is restored, the settings in the desktop file will
override any settings in the configuration file.

File Resource Statistics Displayed in About Box
-----------------------------------------------
The "about box" also contains statistics regarding the file
resources used by QuickVerse for Windows.

New Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) Capabilities Added
--------------------------------------------------
Refer to the section titled "DDE Technical Reference" below
for full details on DDE support included with QuickVerse.

Note Files Used with All Translations
-------------------------------------
When creating a new note file, you may select whether the
note file is to be used with a specific translation or with
all translations.

A note file that is used only with a specific translation
may include all types of notes, including word notes, but
may be used with only one translation. For instance, a note
file created for use with the King James Version (KJV) may
contain word notes but may not be used with any translation
other than the KJV. Use this type of note file if you want
to write commentary on specific words in a verse.

A note file that is used with all translations may contain
book, chapter, and verse notes, but may not contain word
notes. For instance, you may create a note file for all
translations, and use it simultaneously in both a King James
Version window and a New International Version window. The
notes are not tied to any particular translation. Use this
type of note file if you do not need word notes, and want to
be able to use the note file with any translation.

Verse Notes Tagged with a Note Marker
-------------------------------------
A verse reference that has an associated verse note is now
marked with the degree symbol. This is the same symbol used
to mark words that have an associated note. This tag will
help you locate verses that contain a verse note as you are
browsing through the verse text.

Book and Chapter Notes
----------------------
You may now write notes on an entire book or chapter by
selecting Book Notes or Chapter Notes from the Notes menu.
Selecting either of these menu choices will display the
Study Notes dialog box. Selecting Book Notes will cause the
note for the current book to be displayed. Similarly,
selecting Chapter Notes will cause the note for the current
chapter to be displayed.

The Study Notes dialog box contains the following items.

- A list box containing the books of the Bible.

Select a book from this list to change the selected
book. The note for the selected book will be displayed.

- A list box containing the chapter in the current book.

Select "Entire book" to view the book note, or a chapter
number to view a chapter note.

- The note window.

The book or chapter note is displayed in this window.
The note is for the selected book and chapter in the two
list boxes discussed above. If there is no note, then
this window is left blank.) You may edit the note by
clicking in this window and typing. You may also access
the clipboard using the standard clipboard shortcut keys
for cut, copy, and paste. Any changes to the note that
you make will automatically be saved in the note file.

- Buttons for the following features: close, copy to, and
  cancel.

If a book note is present for a book, then a symbol similar
to a superscript 'o' is added to the first verse in the book.
If a chapter note is present for a chapter, then a symbol
similar to a superscript 'a' is added to the first verse in
the book. These tags help you to locate books and chapters
that contain notes as you browse through the Bible text.

Book and chapter notes may be automatically included with the
verses (see the section on setup options below). A book note
is included with the first verse in the book. A chapter note
is included with the first verse in the chapter.

Setup Options for Including Book and Chapter Notes
--------------------------------------------------
Options to select whether or not the book and chapter notes
are included with the verse text have been added to the File
Setup, Print Setup, and Clipboard Setup dialog boxes. The
figures in the User's Guide might not reflect these options.

************************************************************
         Installing QuickVerse Add-On Products
************************************************************

QuickVerse for Windows uses the same add-on products that
are available for use with QuickVerse 2.0 (for DOS). That
is, a QuickVerse 2.0 Bible Text product, for example, may be
used with either QuickVerse 2.0 or QuickVerse for Windows.

Beginning in December, 1992, all QuickVerse packages include
an installation procedure and an installation disk for
installing the product. If your add-on product contains
installation instructions, please follow those instructions
to complete the installation of the add-on product.

Prior to December, 1992, the "QuickVerse 2.0 Installation
Disk" was used to install QuickVerse 2.0, the QuickVerse
Companion, add-on Bible texts, and the Hebrew and Greek
Transliterated Bible. If you have received an older stock
product, or purchased from an outlet other than directly
from Parsons Technology, your add-on product might not
contain the new installation procedure. In this case, you
should use the "QuickVerse 2.0 Installation Disk" to
complete the installation. You may perform the following
steps.

1. Exit Windows, or run MS-DOS from within Windows.
2. Place the QuickVerse 2.0 Installation Disk in the
    drive (A or B).
3. Log into the drive by typing A: (or B:) at the DOS
    prompt.
4. Type INSTALL. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Be sure to use your QuickVerse for Windows directory
instead of the \QV2 directory as will be suggested by
    the installation program.

************************************************************
            Installing Nave's Topical Bible
************************************************************

The Nave's Topical Bible includes its own installation
program. Exit Windows or run a MS-DOS session from within
Windows, then follow the instructions that come with Nave's
Topical Bible.

Older copies of the Nave's Install program will expect the
DOS version of QuickVerse to be installed. If you don't own
the DOS program and the Nave's Install program aborts because
it can't find QV2.EXE, you should create a fake QV2.EXE by
doing the following:

1. Exit to DOS or run a MS-DOS session from within Windows.
2. Log into your QuickVerse for Windows directory. This is
usually \QVWIN. To do this, type "CD \QVWIN" at the DOS
    prompt then press Enter.
3. Type "COPY QVWIN.CFG QV2.EXE" then press Enter.
4. Run the Nave's Install program again. If you are prompted,
it is not necessary to update the QV2.EXE file. You can
skip this step and continue with the remainder of the
    installation.

************************************************************
               Installation Error 105
************************************************************

If a "File Error 105" is reported during the installation of
QuickVerse for Windows, it may be caused by the installation
of a virus intercepting program, such as Central Point's
VSafe program, instead of being caused by a damaged disk.
When this error is received, we suggest that you remove
VSafe, or any other virus detection program, from memory and
then attempt the installation again.

************************************************************
      Compatibility with Atech Publisher's PowerPak
************************************************************

Publisher's PowerPak version 1.57, a font utility program
supplied by Atech Software, is not fully compatible with many
Windows applications, including QuickVerse for Windows. When
using Publisher's PowerPak with QuickVerse, error messages may
be displayed when text is printed and the print operation may
not complete. Additionally, when a PowerPak font is used, the
text in the windows may not display correctly. These errors
generally occur when three or more translation windows are
open, but may occur at any time.

As of the writing of the text file, we are continuing to work
with Atech Software to help them resolve these problems with
Publisher's PowerPak.

************************************************************
         Compatibility with Wired for Sound
************************************************************

We have been made aware that the Wired for Sound program
contains a bug that causes it to crash the computer,
generally resulting in a reset being required, when both of
the following conditions occur:

    - an action occurs that generates a sound in Wired for
      Sound, and
    - when the current application does not have any free
      file resources available.

Since QuickVerse for Windows uses more file resources than
most applications, it is much more likely that you will
encounter this bug in Wired for Sound when using QuickVerse
than when using many other Windows applications. The only
solution to this problem is to disable or close Wired for
Sound while using programs such as QuickVerse that routinely
access several data files.

************************************************************
         Compatibility with Other Sound Products
************************************************************

Other Windows "sound" products, such as Wired for Sound, may
generate the same errors as Wired for Sound, discussed above.

Additionally, such programs have been known to halt the
computer when QuickVerse for Windows displays a QuickVerse
Message window. The symptom of this problem is that
QuickVerse appears not to display any buttons in the message
window. However, the actual cause of the problem is the sound
program. Removing the sound program eliminates this problem.

************************************************************
List of Word Processors that can not be Customized
************************************************************

The following word processing programs are known to not be
customizable using the Customize Word Processor feature.

WordPerfect for Windows (when used with Windows version
3.0 only... it may be customized when used with
        version 3.1)
    PFS:Publisher
    PFS:WindowsWorks

************************************************************
        Customizing WordPerfect for Windows
************************************************************

Customizing WordPerfect
-----------------------

WordPerfect for Windows versions 5.1 and 5.2 with Windows
version 3.1 can be customized using the Customize Word
Processor feature of QuickVerse for Windows. This capability
adds a new menu item called QuickVerse Paste to the edit menu
of WordPerfect for Windows. Selecting this menu items causes
a selected scripture passage to be pasted into the word
processor document. This method does not use dynamic data
exchange (DDE).

To use this feature, perform the following setup operations
once.

    1. Start QuickVerse for Windows.
    2. Select the Options menu.
    3. Select the Customize WP menu item.
    4. Check the check box next to the WordPerfect entry.
    5. Press the Update button.

To use this feature when you start your Windows session,
start WordPerfect for Windows, then start QuickVerse for
Windows. QuickVerse will automatically customize
WordPerfect's edit menu.

Note: If you start WordPerfect after starting
QuickVerse, you can customize WordPerfect's edit menu by
pressing the Update button again in the Customize Word
    Processors dialog box.

Select the new item, QuickVerse Paste, from WordPerfect's
edit menu.

QVWIN.WCM, a WordPerfect Macro
------------------------------

Additionally, if you are using WordPerfect for Windows
version 5.2, you may use the QVWIN.WCM macro included with
QuickVerse for Windows. Copy this macro from your QuickVerse
directory to the MACROS subdirectory in your WordPerfect for
Windows directory.

You may add this macro to the button bar by performing the
following steps.

    0. Start WordPerfect for Windows, version 5.2.
    1. Select the View menu.
    2. Select the Button Bar Setup menu item.
    3. Select the Edit menu item.
    4. Press the "Assign Macro to Button" button.
    5. Select the macro titled QVWIN.WCM.
    6. Press the "Assign" button.

This will cause a new button to be added to the button bar.
The button will appear as a cassette tape with the letters
"Qvwin" underneath, if your button bar is configured to show
both icons and characters.

To save the new button bar, perform the following steps.

    1. Select the View menu.
    2. Select the Button Bar Setup Menu Item.
    3. Select the Save As menu item.
    4. Press the Save button.

The macro assumes that WordPerfect has been customized, that
is, that QuickVerse Paste has been added to the Edit menu.
If this is not true, then an error will occur when you
execute the macro.

For What It's Worth
-------------------

We have received reports of WordPerfect 5.2 generating
General Protection Faults after multiple paste operations.
One report indicated that the error only occurred when the
keyboard was used to select the QuickVerse Paste from the
edit menu. This error has not been confirmed by Parsons
Technology, but has been forwarded to the attention of
WordPerfect Customer Service.

Other reports have indicated that various WordPerfect error
messages are displayed following multiple paste operations.
One report indicates that the problems occur only after
changing the font in WordPerfect. Another report indictes
that the problems was solved by disabling the Adobe Type
Manager (ATM) product. These errors have not been confirmed
by Parsons Technology, but have been forwarded to the
attention of WordPerfect Customer Service.

If you encounter either of these problems while pasting into
a WordPerfect document, we recommend that you contact
WordPerfect Customer Service directly.

Answers to a Few Common Questions
************************************************************

Q: Should I be in the habit of making backup files?

A: Absolutely! If your index and note files contain data
that is valuable to you, make regular backups of these
files to help reduce the possibility of data loss.

Q: What is the purpose of an unsorted index?

A: One of the purposes of an unsorted index is to rearrange
the order of the verses from biblical order to your
order. As an example, suppose that you are creating a
lesson on tithing. You may want to start with verses
from the New Testament and then get a few from the Old
Testament. You could list them in the index in the order
you wanted to refer to them. Then when the index is
printed, the verses will be listed in your order, not in
biblical order. You could even repeat verses by
inserting the same verse into the index multiple times.

By the way, by combining this feature with the notes
feature, your whole lesson could be prepared from within
    QuickVerse.

Q: After I perform a search, the search words are not
displayed in boldface even though I have that option
turned on in the Display Options dialog box. Why not?

A: In some fonts such as the system font, the difference
between "bold" and "normal" is difficult to discern. If
there is not enough contrast between bold and normal, try
    selecting a different font.

Q: How often do I need to press the "update" button in the
    Word Processor Customization dialog box?

A: The update button in the Word Processor Customization
dialog box can be used at any time that you want to
provide a link between QuickVerse and the other
    applicaton.

If the other application is running before QuickVerse is
started, the QuickVerse may be able to establish the link
when it is started. If not, just press the update
    button.

If you close the application and start it again while
QuickVerse is still running, you will need to press the
update button to create the link.

Q: Are the clipboard setup options used when "copy" is
    selected from the Edit menu?

A: No. The "cut" and "copy" menu commands in the edit menu
cut or copy the highlighted text as displayed. The only
clipboard formats that are used in these cases are the
settings for whether to use boldface for search words,
italic for supplied words, and red to signify Words of
    Christ.

Q: When I cancel a Paste Verses operation from Word for
Windows, a WordBasic error is generated. Why is this?

A: When you select Paste Verses from the Edit menu of Word
for Windows (using the QVWIN.DOT template), QuickVerse
will respond by displaying a Paste Verses dialog box. If
you cancel this dialog box, then QuickVerse informs Word
for Windows that the requested information was not
copied. Word for Windows responds with the error message
to indicate to you that the information was not copied.

Q: How big is the Windows clipboard? Can I make it any
    bigger?

A: The Windows clipboard can contain about 65,536 characters.
It is not possible to make it any bigger. Also, when
pasting in rich text format (where either bold, italics,
or red words are used) can cause the clipboard to fill up
    faster.

Q: QuickVerse always displays verses in context, but there
are times when I want to see the full verse text for all
of the verses that matched my search. I know that I can
view the full verse text in the search list window, but
I don't really want to have to scroll over to see all of
the verse. Is there anything that I can do?

A: Yes. Windows provides an application called
"Clipboard." It is usually located in the Main program
group. Start this application and size the window to
your preference. Then perform your search in
QuickVerse. Following the search, use the Copy To
button in the search list window to copy all of the
verses to the clipboard. Use alt-tab to access the
Clipboard application. This will contain a list of
all of the verses that matches your search.

               DDE Technical Reference
************************************************************

INTRODUCTION TO DDE
-------------------

Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) is a method whereby two
applications can communicate with one another using a
standardized format. This communication takes place as
applications send messages to each other to initiate
conversations, to request and share data, and to terminate
conversations.

The WM_DDE_INITIATE and corresponding WM_DDE_ACK message must
be sent using the SendMessage() API. All other DDE messages
are issued using the PostMessage() API.

The PostMessage calling format is as shown.

    PostMessage(hRecipient, Message, wParam, lParam);

where

hRecipient - the window handle who receives the message
Message - a DDE message to be sent
wParam - for DDE message, this is generally the
handle to the window that sent the message
    lParam - additional message-specific arguments

Atoms, which are WORD values that refer to character strings
in a case-insensitive manner, play a very important role in
DDE communication. Atoms are used for the DDE application
(the server application name), topic (topic supported by the
DDE server application) and item strings (data item within
each topic sopported by the DDE server application).
Applications using these atoms must explicitly delete them to
purge them from the atom list. In all cases, the sender of a
message must delete any atom which the intended receiver will
not receive due to an error condition, such as failure of the
PostMessage() function.

In addition, the data structures that are transferred from
one Windows program to another must be allocated using
GlobalAlloc() with GMEM_DDESHARE option. This allows the
global memory block to be shared among multiple Windows
programs.

For more information about the DDE, please refer to Chapter
17 of Petzold's "Programming Windows 2nd edition" and Chapter
15 of SDK manual, volume 2.

GENERAL METHODOLOGY
-------------------

QuickVerse for Windows supports COLD DDE links. Cold links
allow information to be passed from one application to
another without any additional updating being required or
requested.

Warm links and hot links are not supported.

QuickVerse serves only as a DDE server, not as a client. That
is, it supplies information to other applications but does
not request information from other applications.

A client application can use the WM_DDE_REQUEST message to
request information from QuickVerse. It can use the
WM_DDE_EXECUTE message to pass instructions to QuickVerse.
Both of these methods are discussed in the sections below.

DDE SPECIFICATION FOR WM_DDE_REQUEST
------------------------------------

The WM_DDE_REQUEST message is used to request QuickVerse to
place the text for a specified passage in DDE shared memory
that can then be used by the client application.

The DDE conversation must be initiated with an application
name of "QVWIN" and a topics name of "Verses." wParam
of the WM_DDE_REQUEST message is the handle to the DDE client
window. The low word of lParam is the requested clipboard
format. CF_TEXT and rich text format are supported. To
obtain the rich text format specifier, use the
RegisterClipboardFormat("Rich Text Format") API. The high
word of lParam is an atom containing the requested verse
reference or references.

In response to this message, QuickVerse will allocate DDE
shared memory and transfer the text into this memory.
QuickVerse will then post a WM_DDE_DATA message. The low
word of lParam contains the handle to the DDEDATA memory
block. The values stored in this memory block are shown
below.

    Field Value Explanations
    ---------------------------------------------------------
fResponse TRUE The client application is expected to
                        free the memory object.
fRelease TRUE This data is offered in response to a
                        WM_DDE_REQUEST message.
    reserved FALSE Reserved by Windows.
fAckReq TRUE The client application is expected to
send a WM_DDE_ACK message after the
                        WM_DDE_DATA message has been
                        processed.
cfFormat CF_TEXT Format of the data in the value
                        field.
Value hMem Handle to the memory block
                        containing the verse text.

The client window is expected to send a WM_DDE_ACK message to
QuickVerse after the WM_DDE_DATA message has been processed.
If the client window does not respond within a specified time
period, QuickVerse will free the memory blocks it allocated
for the WM_DDE_DATA message.

DDE SPECIFICATION FOR WM_DDE_EXECUTE
------------------------------------

The WM_DDE_EXECUTE message is used to pass commands to
QuickVerse. Prior to using the WM_DDE_EXECUTE command, a DDE
conversation must be initiated with an application of "QVWIN"
and a topic of "Verses."

In all cases, wParam of the WM_DDE_EXECUTE message is the
handle to the DDE client window. The low word of lParam is
reserved. The high word of lParam is the handle to global
memory, allocated as GMEM_DDESHARE. This global memory
contains the item string, or the command string. The client
application should not assume that this memory will not be
modified. QuickVerse may modify this memory in response to
specific command messages.

The following commands are supported.

Command: WM_DDE_EXECUTE
Application: "QVWIN"
Topic: "Verses"

Item: NULL

        Available beginning with version 1.0c.

QuickVerse Paste. This command causes a dialog box
to be displayed. The user can select a reference and
a translation. The reference is copied to the
        clipboard using the specific translation.

Item: QvPaste

        Available beginning with version 1.0f.

        QuickVerse Paste. See above.

Item: [GoTo("John 3:16")]

        Available beginning with version 1.0f.

Go to a specified reference. The reference must be
included in quotes. The first verse matching the
        criteria will be used.

Item: [Translation("KJV")]

        Available beginning with version 1.0f.

Activate the specified translation. The translation
is a 3 or 4 letter abbreviation enclosed in quotes.
The abbreviation should match the abbreviation given
in the Options:Translations menu. If the translation
is already the active translation then nothing
happens. If a window with the translation is open
but not active, it is activated. If the translation
is not open in any window, then a new window is
opened to contain the translation. During the
processing of this message, QuickVerse may be
        temporarily activated. However, it returns
activation to the previously active application when
        through.

Item: [Minimize]

        Available beginning with version 1.0f.

Minimize QuickVerse. This command causes the whole
QuickVerse application to be minimized, but does not
        activate it.

Item: [Activate]

        Available beginning with version 1.0f.

Activate QuickVerse. This command causes QuickVerse
to be activated. If the application is minimized, it
is also restored to normal size.

Item: [QuickSearch("Phrase")]

        Available beginning with version 1.0g.

Performs a QuickSearch on the indicated phrase. The
phrase may be any phrase supported by QuickVerse, and
may include wildcards and Boolean operators. This
        command may or may not leave QuickVerse activated;
therefore, it is typical to also use the Activate
command before or after this command.

Each command must be enclosed by brackets [ ] and each
command may be separated by a space. Spaces with each
command are not allowed, except in quoted strings.
Parenthesis ( ) are used to begin and end the parameter list.

QuickVerse will respond to the WM_DDE_EXECUTE message with a
WM_DDE_ACK message. The low word of lParam will contain the
DDEACK structure. The fAck flag will be set to TRUE (non-
zero) if the command string was completely executed. fAck is
set to FALSE (zero) if the command string was not executed.

Multiple commands may be passed in one command string. For
instance, to display John 3:16 in the King James Version, the
following command string would be used.

        [Translation("KJV")][GoTo("John 3:16")]

However, this is not recommended. By passing each command in
a different WM_DDE_EXECUTE message, the return value may be
examined to determine which command, if any, failed.

If multiple commands are contained in one item, the commands
will be processed from left to right. The process will abort
and set fAck to FALSE immediately upon encountering an error.
That is, if the command string is

        [Translation("KJV")][GoTo("John 3:16")]

and the KJV translation is unavailable, then the GoTo command
will not be attempted.
