LexIcon is a collection of more than 1,500 useful, colorful Windows 3.x
icons that you can use to make your Program Manager more attractive and
efficient.

Also included is the LexIcon Editor and Viewer. With this tool you can
view, modify, and manipulate these and other Windows icons and create your
own special icons. To start the Editor and Viewer, double click on the
LexIcon program icon once this system has been installed (see below).
There is extensive context-sensitive help available by pressing the F1
key.

                               Installation
                               ------------

From the File Manager double click on SETUP.EXE on the floppy disk.
Or from the Program Manager choose File/Run... and execute SETUP.EXE
on the floppy disk (such as A:SETUP.EXE in the command line).

Setup will then show a default drive and directory (C:\LEXICON). If you
want to install to another drive or directory change it. Then just press
enter.

This will copy the necessary files, uncompress the program and all of the
icons, and optionally create a Program Manager Group that can be used to
execute the LexIcon Viewer/Editor. The LexIcon icon can be copied to
another Group by holding the Shift key while dragging it where you want.

Simple as that.

                           Using LexIcon icons
                           -------------------

To use any of these icons in your Program Manager follow the few easy
steps below:

1. Go to the Program Manager.

2. Point at the program that you wish to change the icon, clicking the
mouse once. The name of the program will be highlighted.

3. Point to FILE in the Program Manager menu. Click once.

4. Point to PROPERTIES in the File menu. Click once.

5. Click on the CHANGE ICON button in the "Program Item Properties" box.

6a. In the FILE NAME dialog box, type in the location of the new icon.
(For example, if you desire the "Zipkey" icon from the Shareware set
    you would enter C:\LEXICON\SHARE\ZIPKEY.ICO)

OR

6b. Click on BROWSE which will bring up a typical dialog selection menu.
Choose Files of Type Icon if necessary, and change to the drive and
subdirectory you want. You can then double click on the proper file
    name.

7a. To Save the new icon in Program Manager, click OK in the SELECT ICON
and PROGRAM ITEM PROPERTIES dialog boxes.

OR

7b. To Cancel the new icon (and revert to the previous one), click CANCEL
in the SELECT ICON and PROGRAM ITEM PROPERTIES dialog boxes.

Enjoy!

                             Technical Notes
                             ---------------

Icon files can take up quite a lot of space on your hard disk. Even though
each file is only 766 bytes, DOS takes a full cluster to store any file.
Depending on your hard disk, this can be anywhere from 1024 to 4096 bytes.
On extremely large hard disks that use 4k clusters, this collection will
take up 8 megabytes of disk space. Sorry, but there is no getting around
this with the current Windows 3.x internal icon management routines.

One solution is to use the included program, the LexIcon Editor and Viewer
to delete icons that you don't think you'll need. You can always get out
your LexIcon master disk and reinstall icons if you do find a need later.
Commercial or shareware compression programs such as ARJ, PKZIP or LHARC
can also be used to store selected icons or libraries as smaller,
cataloged, files.

                    Partial Installation - Icons Only
                    ---------------------------------

Executing the self-extracting programs LEX-xxxx on the LexIcon disk will
expand a group of icons. Just copy the LEX-xxxx.EXE file to the
C:\LEXICON (or any other) directory and run it to create a group of icons
in an appropriate subdirectory underneath.

For instance to install the alphabet icons copy LEX-DESK.EXE to C:\LEXICON
and run LEX-DESK. You will then have those 182 icons as individual .ICO
files in the subdirectory C:\LEXICON\DESKTOP. LEX-DESK.EXE can then be
erased from C:\LEXICON if you wish.

Self-Extracting
Program Subdirectory
--------------- ------------

LEX-DESK DESKTOP (the work-a-day world)
LEX-FLAG FLAGS (National flags)
LEX-GAME GAMES (Games, general)
LEX-HARD HARDWARE (Physical computer pieces and parts)
LEX-HOME HOME (Home, hobby, religion, etc.)
LEX-LOGO LOGOS (Computer company logos)
LEX-RETA RETAIL (Retail programs)
LEX-SHAR SHARE (Shareware programs)
LEX-STAT STATES (Mini-maps of the 50 states)

Thank you for selecting LexIcon to make your life more beautiful.

Bob Ostrander.
