DAZzle README.TXT file Release 2.0, 8/20/1993

Introduction

Welcome to DAZzle! Please take a few minutes to read this file and also
read the Users Guide for an introduction to the basics of the program.
You can obtain many more details by accessing the on-line Help in the
program.

Necessary Equipment

DAZzle requires a computer with a hard disk running Windows 3.1 or later,
500K of hard disk space, and a Hayes compatible modem for Dial-A-ZIP. As
with most Windows programs, using a VGA or SVGA monitor greatly improves
the appearance of DAZzle.

Installing DAZzle

To get DAZzle up and running, run the installation program as follows:

1. Insert the DAZzle diskette into drive A: or B:.
2. Start Windows, then choose File|Run.
3. Type A:\SETUP.EXE (or B:\SETUP.EXE. if you use drive B:).
4. Enter your name, address and serial number in the Installation
dialog box. Your serial number is the seven digit number printed
   on the installation diskette.
5. If you are upgrading or re-installing DAZzle, note that the installation
procedure will upgrade the program only. None of your layouts,
preferences or settings will be changed.

Most Common DAZzle Trouble Spots

1. Dial-A-ZIP does not work.

If your modem doesn't respond at all, you either selected the wrong COM
port (DAZzle lists the COM ports it can talk to when the
Dial-A-ZIP|Setup command is chosen). OR the COM port address is wrong,
which must be set through the Windows Control Panel (Ports Section).
DAZzle also displays the address of each COM port it finds when
    Dial-A-ZIP|Setup command is chosen.

If your modem responds (dials the phone number) but the Look-up fails,
either the phone number was entered incorrectly or you are using an MNP
modem and have not disabled that feature with the Initialize Command.
Check the phone number and make sure you can hear the ZIP-Station
answer the line. If you have an MNP modem, refer to the on-line help
    for ways to disable it.

2. The Envelope/Label/Flyer doesn't print properly.

First, not all printers are created equal, some print envelopes and
labels better than others, reguardless of the software used. Generally,
laser printers perform best, followed by ink jet and then dot matrix.

With all printers, make sure you select the proper paper feed options
in the File|Printer Setup. Select the correct tray, orientation and
also the location for envelopes. You can use the two offset values
to accurately adjust the printing location on the mail piece.

For the fastest results, use the simplest envelope design, the more
fonts, text messages and graphics used the slower the print speed.

The DAZzle On-line help has very extensive instructions for envelope and
label feeding for many common printers.

3. Importing address from other applications

Use either the clipboard (copy and pasting) or use DAZzle's DDE capability
if your other application supports DDE. Please check the on-line help for
    details on these features.

The current release of DAZzle has the following known limitations:

1. TIFF files over 64K can not be used. FAX or LZW compressed TIFF files
are not supported. Color TIFF files completely supported.
2. Some very large (over 1 megabyte) PCX files do not work in DAZzle.

Need More Help?

DAZzle is equipped with an extensive on-line help system. Pull down the
Help menu to view a table of contents, a list of commands, or a section on
"how to" utilize DAZzle's features. Clicking on the help button in any
dialog box or pressing F1 will give you information about the options
available in that dialog.

If you run across a problem that is not explained in this manual or in the
on-line help, make sure you have checked the special section of on-line
help called Troubleshooting; often, this will help you determine the cause
of the problem. If it is a Windows problem, check with your Microsoft
Windows manual. If you have gone through all the steps above, you may call
the DAZzle support line. Please have the following information available
when you call:

   Your DAZzle Serial Number/Owner Name.
The brand and model of computer and printer being used.
   Your Windows Version.

Telephone support is available Monday-Friday between 9:00 A.M. and
5:00 P.M. (PST). Call 415-321-2640. Additionally, you may send us a FAX
at (415) 321-0356.

DAZZLE.INI Settings

The DAZZLE.INI file contains all of the current settings for DAZzle. All
of the settings in this file are normally automatically maintained by
DAZzle. However, a couple of settings can be changed by editing the file
with a Text Editor (like Window's Notepad).

Section [ModemOptions]

WaitTime

Normally DAZzle will attempt to connect to a ZIP-Station for up to 30
seconds. If the connection takes longer than this, DAZzle will abort
the Dial-A-ZIP. If you need to increase this time, change the value of
WaitTime option. For example to have DAZzle wait up 45 seconds use:

	WaitTime=45

FlowControl

DAZzle uses the Clear-To-Send protocol for telecommuncations as its
default. If you are having problems with a Clear-To-Send timeout, you
might try either the DTR flow control or XON/XOFF flow control. To do
this use the following:

For DTR flow control use: FlowControl=1
For XON/XOFF (software) flow control use: FlowControl=4

(The default, for CTS flow control is: FlowControl=2 )

CommandWaitTime

During the telecommunications process for Dial-A-ZIP, DAZzle pauses
between commands for the modem to keep up. Normally this is
600 milliseconds. Some older modems, require a longer pause.
To increase this time use setting such as:

	CommandWaitTime=800

Settings are in milliseconds. It may take some trial and error
to get the shortest pause that works with your modem. We
don't recommend changing this unless you have consulted with
Envelope Manager Technical Support.
