                    QualiType Keyboard v1.0

  Welcome to FontHandler!

This document contains late-breaking news and information
that did not make it into either the printed FontHandler
manual or the FontHandler/QTKeyboard Help files.

For information on using QualiType Keyboard, see the online
Help file. There is no printed documentation for QTKeyboard.

During our FontHandler beta testing program, it came to our
attention that the font sub-system on A LOT of people's
computers is, quite frankly, pretty messed up.

FontHandler can help! During our install/uninstall
procedures, FontHandler performs much more careful error
checking and verification of your system's integrity than
any other program (especially the Windows Control Panel!).

HOWEVER: For best results, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND that before
you begin using FontHandler, you "clean up" your Windows
font sub-system and start over from scratch. This is not
as scary as it sounds. It simply means that you should:

    (1) UNINSTALL all TrueType and/or ATM Type 1 fonts
    (2) optionally reorder the font files on your disk, then
    (3) restart Windows and begin using FontHandler to manage
        your fonts.

For comprehensive help on doing this, consult the topics
SETTING UP YOUR FONT SYSTEM, REBUILDING YOUR TRUETYPE
CONFIGURATION, REBUILDING YOUR ATM CONFIGURATION, and
FONTHANDLER TIPS AND HINTS in either the printed
FontHandler manual or the FontHandler on-line Help file.

===============================================================

CORRECTIONS & ADDITIONS TO THE FONTHANDLER MANUAL

  * There is an additional topic in the FontHandler On-Line
Help file called REBUILDING YOUR ATM CONFIGURATION which
is not included in the printed manual. If you use the
Adobe Type Manager program, consult this topic for
    help in troubleshooting ATM's operation.

  * On page 31, in the REMOVING THE FONTHANDLER PROGRAM
topic, the QTATM.DLL file is not listed.

This is a Dynamic Link Library file required for
FontHandler's operation. (This file is only omitted in
the printed manual: the identical topic in the Help
    file includes correct information.)

  * When you install FontHandler, the FontHandler installation
program copies a Windows icon file called FH-HELP.ICO to
your hard disk. Similarly, the installation program copies
an icon file called KB-HELP.ICO to your hard disk when you
    install the QualiType Keyboard program.

These *.ICO icon files are not included in the REMOVING
THE FONTHANDLER PROGRAM topic in the printed FontHandler
manual (although they ARE listed in the identical HELP
    file topics).

If you remove the FontHandler and/or QTKeyboard programs
from your system, these *.ICO icon files may be safely
deleted. Also, if you keep FontHandler on your system
BUT delete the FontHandler/QTKeyboard HELP program icons
from Program Manager, you may also safely delete these
*.ICO files. (They are only there for Program Manager's
use and are not required for the HELP system itself...)

  * In addition to the information on removing FontHandler
in the manual and Help file, the FontHandler Installation
Program creates a file called INSTALL.LOG in the
directory on your disk where FontHandler is placed. This
file contains a summary of all files copied to your
system by the installation program. You may review
this file in any plain-text editing program (such as
Windows Notepad) for help in uninstalling FontHandler.

  UNDOCUMENTED KEYSTROKES

Two additional shortcut keys were added to the FontHandler
Setup Window after the documentation was printed:

     (1) Press ALT-D to DEselect all fonts in the
current listbox. (This undoes the operation
         of the Select All button...)

     (2) Press ALT-R to REFRESH the list of fonts in
the uninstalled list box when you are using
the << Fonts In This Dir >> meta-group.

This is a convenient feature in case you
have copied or deleted some fonts in
         the current FontHandler directory (with
File Manager) while FontHandler is running.
Pressing ALT-R is a quicker method of
updating the font list than exiting and
         re-entering the Setup Window.

  COMPATIBILITY NOTES

  * If you use the After Dark screen saver from Berkeley
Systems Inc., please note that QualiType Keyboard's
    "CTRL-SHIFT-macrokey" macro trigger sequence can
sometimes conflict with the default After Dark
hot key for "Sleep Now" (CTRL-SHIFT-S).

The solution is either to never create any QTKeyboard
macros which use the "S" key (not very practical) or
change the After Dark hotkey to use another key. We
recommend using a function key such as CTRL-SHIFT-F10.
Consult the After Dark documentation for help in
    reassigning the "Sleep Now" hotkey.

This problem is also true for After Dark's hotkey
"CTRL-SHIFT-Z" for the "Wall Zapper" feature. But
unfortunately, the current version of Wall Zapper
does not allow you to select a new hotkey. The
solution (for now) is to remember to only use the
RIGHT CTRL and SHIFT keys to trigger Wall Zapper,
since QTKeyboard uses the LEFT CTRL and SHIFT key
    combination.

  * FontHandler has limited support for the use of different
fonts with the same name. By "limited support", we mean
the following restrictions, which are largely due to
Windows constraints on using different fonts with the
    same name:

    1. Identically-named fonts must be both UNINSTALLED
and stored in DIFFERENT SUBDIRECTORIES for
FontHandler to be able to distinguish between
them. This is true EVEN IF the fonts have
DIFFERENT DOS FILENAMES since Windows tracks
       fonts internally by name alone.

    2. You can use same-name fonts in FontHandler
groups, but only ONE font of each name may
be present in each Group Set. If you
try to add another font of the same name
to ANY GROUP in a Group Set which ALREADY has
a group using a font of that name, FontHandler
will not be able to distinguish between the
two different fonts in the Group Set and the
two groups members will become confused.

If you have two fonts with the same name
which you want to use separately, the solution
       is to EITHER:

          (A) Don't put them into groups, but rather
only install them - one at a time -
with the CHANGE DIRECTORY button and
              the <<Fonts In This Dir>> meta-group
       OR:

          (B) Only use them each in their own Group Set,
never mixing the two fonts into any groups
              in the same Group Set.

Note: a typical example of this situation
for many people is the conflict between the
Windows TrueType "Symbol" font and the
"Symbol" font included with Adobe Type Manager.

Windows can only use ONE of these fonts at
a time. Installing them both at once can
cause the system to become confused (probably
even more confused than you are right now!
But don't worry, this is easier to understand
in practice than to read about...)

  * If you own two fonts which use the same DOS filename
(whether or not they have the same font name) you may
want to rename one of them to be slightly different.

For example, the Microsoft TrueType Font Pack #2
includes a font named "Old English Text MT" which
uses the DOS filename OLDENGL.TTF. The KeyFonts Pro
font package from SoftKey ALSO includes a font
similarly named "Old English", but which uses the
    EXACT same DOS filename OLDENGL.TTF.

Installing both of these fonts at the same time with
FontHandler results in the first-installed font's *.FOT
and/or *.TTF file being overwritten by the second one.
When this happens, Windows can become confused and
FontHandler may report a "reading error in file" problem
upon attempting to uninstall the second font.

Note that the Windows Control Panel does NOT have this
problem, preferring to rename the *.FOT and/or *.TTF file
"on the fly" as the font is installed. But FontHandler
specifically DOES NOT do this, because renaming the DOS
font file as it is installed will almost certainly result
in confusion in any FontHandler font group which uses the
    renamed font!

For use with FontHandler, it is better if you manually
rename any font in your type collection with a conflicting
DOS filename BEFORE using the font in your groups.

  * If you use a Windows video driver with a "large fonts"
System screen-font (such as the 8514/a with Large Fonts
driver) FontHandler's font-name listboxes in the Setup
and Group Control windows will exhibit a slight overlap
at the bottom of the selection highlight.

This is due to the fact that for design reasons,
FontHandler uses a slightly different screen-font size
in the Main Window font listbox than in the Setup/Group
    Control font listboxes.

This is only a cosmetic artifact: it does not affect
the operation of the program in any way. If you are
truly bothered by it, however, consider switching to
a more standard "small font" screen display (which
in our humble opinion is more in proportion to Windows'
    intended design).

===============================================================

  AN ALTERNATE-DESIGN VERSION FONTHANDLER

During our development of FontHandler, we were faced with a
design decision that was split almost exactly 50-50 in the
  preferences of our beta testers.

Windows allows standard listbox behavior to be either
"single select" or "multi-select", but NOT both at the same
time. A "normal" listbox is multi-select, so the standard
version of FontHandler uses multi-select listboxes.

In the FontHandler "Group Control" dialog box, you build
your font groups by selecting font names to include or not
include in a group. For this function, some people prefer
the "single select" behavior of the listbox so that they
may specifically choose each of the fonts for the
group - one at a time - and without fear of accidentally
  deselecting other fonts.

If you find the multi-select design of FontHandler's Group
Control dialog box difficult to use or non-intuitive, you
may prefer the single select version. This alternate
version is included on your original FontHandler disk in
the FONTHAND.EXE file located in the \OTHER directory.

To switch to this alternate version, simply copy the
  \OTHER\FONTHAND.EXE file over the \FONTHAND\FONTHAND.EXE
  file on your hard disk.

If you need help to do this, follow these steps:

      1. Insert your original FontHandler disk into
your floppy drive (either A: or B:)

      2. Run the Windows File Manager program and type
CTRL-A or CTRL-B, depending on whether your
FontHandler disk is in drive A: or B:

This will open a new drive window showing the
contents of the FontHandler disk (Note: "CTRL-A"
means press and HOLD the CTRL key while you
simultaneously press and release the "A" key...)

      3. Double-click on the small yellow folder icon
named OTHER, then select the FONTHAND.EXE file
         located in this OTHER directory.

      4. Select FILE and COPY from the File Manager menu
and type the pathname where you have installed
         FontHandler.

By default, this is set to C:\FONTHAND by the
FontHandler installation program. If you used
another drive or directory name when you
installed FontHandler, type the other drive or
         directory name here instead.

      5. File Manager will present a CONFIRM FILE REPLACE
dialog box to verify that you want to replace...

         C:\FONTHAND\FONTHAND.EXE

...with the copy of the file from...

         A:\OTHER\FONTHAND.EXE

...(or B:\ as appropriate). If this information
appears correct, click the YES button to copy
the file, overwriting the one on your hard disk.

The next time you run FontHandler, the Group Control dialog
box will use this alternate, single-select version of the
  font name listbox.

Finally, if you decide later that you prefer the standard
multi-select version after all, you can restore the
original FONTHAND.EXE file by simply re-running the
FontHandler installation program and again overwriting
the FONTHAND.EXE file with the standard version. If you
do this, however, be sure to choose Custom Install and
select only the FONTHANDLER PROGRAM files so that your
  QTKeyboard files are not overwritten.

(Note: the standard-version FONTHAND.EXE file is compressed
on the original disk in the FONTHAND.EX$ file and MUST be
uncompressed by the installer program before it can be run!
You CANNOT simply copy the compressed-version files to your
  hard disk!)
