Saber Secure 4.0 - Release Notes
SECURING WORKSTATIONS (continued)

___________________________
USING SECURE AT THE DESKTOP

This section is provided for people using Secure as a
desktop application for on-demand workstation
security.

Why use Secure?
---------------

Secure lets you safely leave your workstation area
temporarily without logging off the network. Depending
upon the options your network administrator has
provided, you'll be able to start the Secure program,
which provides a screen blanker to protect your
information from being read, as well as password
protection to prohibit unauthorized access while
you're away. With a password, you can "unlock" the
workstation and return to your work.

Which procedure should I use?
-----------------------------

You'll use one of two basic procedures. If your
network administrator has provided you with the Secure
command (or if you execute the command through a menu
item), follow the command procedure below. If you have
been provided a "hot key" (a shortcut key combination
for starting the applications), follow the hot key
procedure.

NOTE:	If your network administrator has set up
Secure to automatically log off the network session
and reboot your workstation after a period of
inactivity, be sure to save your work and close files
before leaving your workstation.

Command procedure
-----------------

This procedure describes the basic use of Secure at
the desktop. Follow the steps below to use Secure at
your workstation as a DOS application.

Step Action
---- ------

1.	To start Secure, use one of the following
	methods.

	     -	Enter the following command at the DOS
		prompt, and press [Enter]:

			SECURE

  	     or

	     -	If a menu item for Secure is
		available, select it.

Response: This command loads Secure and
displays an initial screen for defining a
	password and optional message.

2.	If you are required to define a password, type
a password you wish to use for unlocking the
workstation when you return, and press
	[Enter].

	or

If the Novell network password is being used,
the following message is displayed in the
	password field:

		TAKEN FROM NETWORK

Response: The cursor is positioned in the
Message field at the bottom of the screen.

NOTE: If you do not wish to define a
		password, press [Enter] at the
password field. Then, when you return,
press any key to return to your
		workstation session. However, be aware
that security is reduced with this
		method.

3.	Enter an optional message to display in case
someone attempts to use your workstation while
you're away (66 characters maximum). For
example, you can indicate that the workstation
is secured, or provide information about where
you can be reached. When you have completed
	your message, press [Enter].

	Response: The screen is blanked.

4.	When you return to the workstation, press any
	key.

	[Alt]+[S], that your administrator has
	provided for you.

	Response: An initial password definition
	screen (Figure x.1) is displayed.

2.	If you are required to define a password, type
a password you wish to use for unlocking the
workstation when you return, and press
	[Enter].

	or

If the Novell network password is being used,
the following message is displayed in the
	password prompt area:

		TAKEN FROM NETWORK

Response: The cursor is positioned in the
Message field at the bottom of the screen.

NOTE:	If you do not wish to define a
		password, press [Enter] at the
password field. Then, when you return,
press [Enter] twice to return to your
		workstation session. However, be aware
that security is reduced with this
		method.

3.	Enter an optional message to display in case
someone attempts to use your workstation while
you're away (66 characters maximum). For
example, you can indicate that the workstation
is secure, or provide information about where
you can be reached. When you have completed
	your message, press [Enter].

	Response: The screen is blanked.

4.	When you return to the workstation, press any
	key.

Response: The password screen is displayed.

5.	Enter your password and press [Enter].

Response: Secure is closed and you are allowed
	access to your workstation.

_______________
SECURE MESSAGES

The following messages apply to loading and running
Secure, either as a DOS application or a memory
resident utility (terminate-and-stay resident, or TSR,
program). Some messages appear when you are attempting
to load Secure; others appear when Secure is running
at the desktop.

Load messages
-------------

The following messages appear when you attempt to load
Secure. They refer to general processing or syntax errors
in the Secure command line.

     -	Cannot disable current drive.

	Current drive is specified in the -D switch;
however, Secure is unable to disable the
	current drive.

Action: Switch to another drive and load
	Secure.

     -	Cannot unload Secure; not currently resident.

	The command to unload Secure has been given;
however, Secure is not currently loaded as
	memory resident.

     -	Drive specified in the -D switch is invalid;
	must be a local drive.

Secure can disable local drives, but not
network drives. You have specified a drive
other than a valid local drive in the -D
	switch.

Action: Use the -D switch to specify a valid,
	local drive to disable.

     -	Hot key specified with -R switch is invalid;
	must be A-Z or 0-9.

The hot key specified with the -R switch (load
Secure as memory resident) is invalid. Valid
	values are A-Z or 0-9.

Action: Specify a valid hot key.

     -	Secure deactivated; program will be unloaded
	as soon as possible.

This message appears if the command to unload
Secure is executed when other memory-resident
programs have been loaded since Secure. As
soon as the more recently loaded TSRs are
	unloaded, Secure is unloaded.

Action: No action is required; however, if you
wish Secure to unload without delay, make sure
no other memory-resident programs are loaded
	after Secure is loaded.

     -	Secure is not loaded as memory resident;
cannot disable drive specified for swap file.

The local drive specified in the -D switch is
the same as the drive specified for the swap
file in the -F switch. Secure cannot disable
this drive and is not loaded as memory
	resident.

Action: Change either the -D or the -F switch
	designation.

     -	Secure is already loaded as memory resident.

This message is displayed if you attempt to
load Secure as a memory resident utility (with
the -R switch) in memory where Secure is
	already resident.

     -	Secure is not loaded; requires DOS 3.1 or
	later version.

Secure is not loaded because the operating
system requirements have not been met.

Action: Make sure you have the proper version
of DOS before attempting to load Secure.

     -	Secure is not loaded as memory resident.

This message is displayed in conjunction with
other messages if an error is found when you
	attempt to load Secure.

Action: See the descriptions which follow, or
see the description for the accompanying
	message.

     -	Secure is not loaded as memory resident;
cannot find or create swap file.

The drive or path specified in the -F switch
	may be invalid.

Action Verify that the drive, path and
filename are all correct, or try using another
	file name.

     -	Secure is not loaded as memory resident; swap
file specified in -F switch is a read-only
	file.

Secure is not loaded as memory resident
because the file name specified in the -F
switch (use a particular drive, directory or
file for memory swapping) is a read-only file.

     -	Secure loaded as memory resident.

This message confirms that Secure as been
	successfully loaded as a memory-resident
	utility.

     -	Secure unloaded successfully.

Secure has been unloaded from memory.

     -	Swap type specified in -S switch is invalid;
	must be A, E, X, D or O.

The type specified for memory swapping is
	invalid.

Action: See "Select Type of Memory for
Swapping (-Sx)" for a description of valid
	memory types.

     -	Time interval for this switch exceeds maximum.

This message appears when the Secure command
is executed. You have entered a time parameter
for one of the following switches which
	exceeds the maximum of 999.

-Lnnn	Logout and reboot after nnn minutes of
		keyboard inactivity.

-Bnnn	Blank screen after nnn minutes of
		keyboard inactivity.

-Ennn	Time-out and blank screen after nnn
		seconds of keyboard inactivity when
		the password screen is displayed.

Action: Enter a valid parameter for the -L, -B
or -E switch on the Secure command line.

     -	Time interval for this switch is invalid.

This message appears when the Secure command
is executed. You have entered invalid
characters for the -L, -B or -E switch
	(described in previous message description).

Action: Enter a valid parameter for the -L, -B
or -E switch on the Secure command line.

     -	Time interval for this switch not specified.

This message appears when the Secure command
is executed. You have failed to enter a time
parameter for the -L, -B or -E switch
	(described in previous message description).
The values allowed are numerals from 1 to 999.

Action: Enter a valid parameter for the -L
switch on the Secure command line.

     -	Time of day for logout for -T switch is
	invalid.

This message appears when the Secure command
is executed. You have entered an invalid value
for the -T switch (logout and reboot at
specified time). The syntax for the parameter
is hh:mm where hh represents the hour and mm
the minutes at which to initiate the logout
	(military time).

Action: Enter a valid parameter for the -T
switch on the Secure command line.

     -	Warning: time of day for logout precedes
current time; logout will not occur until next
	system day.

This message alerts you to the fact that the
logout time specified in the -T switch (logout
and reboot at specified time) will not occur
	until the next system day.

Action: If you wish for the logout to occur
during the current system day, specify a time
between the current time and 24:00.

Operational messages
--------------------

The following messages appear while Secure is running:

     -	System cannot log off network and reboot while
	files are open.

There are open files preventing Secure from
logging off the network session and rebooting
the workstation. This message is repeated
every minute until the file is closed; then
the user is logged off the network session and
	the workstation is rebooted.

Action: To allow Secure processing to
continue, close any remaining open files.

     -	System is now secured. Please reenter
	password.

This is the default message which is displayed
whenever a key is pressed after the
workstation has been secured and the screen
	has been blanked.

Action: To unlock the workstation, enter your
default Novell network password or the
password defined on the Password screen.

NOTE:	You can override the default message
by entering your own message when you
set up the Password screen for Secure
(see the procedure "Using Secure at
		the Desktop" above for more
		information).

     -	System will log off network and reboot at
	(time) in 5 minutes.
     -	System will log off network and reboot at
	(time) in 1 minute.

The system will log off network and reboot at
	the specified time.

Action: Save and close your open files prior
	to logoff and reboot.

     -	Inactivity: System will log off network and
	reboot in 5 minutes.
     -	Inactivity: System will log off network and
	reboot in 1 minute.

The system will log off the network and reboot
	at the specified time.

Action: To prevent logout and reboot, press
	any key.

     -	Warning: System will reboot after next invalid
	password.

This message is issued after five invalid
	attempts to unlock the workstation.
