Product Overview
----------------

XTree for Windows 2.0 combines unsurpassed file management, file viewing
and ZIP file compression with powerful, flexible program management,
allowing users to create a custom desktop environment.

The File Manager has been enhanced in response to your requests with new
features. We've answered your requests for Zip 2.0 support, enhanced
WYSIWYG file viewing, a new SpeedSearch command which allows you to
quickly jump to a file or directory by typing the first letter of its
name, support for DOS 6.0 utilities, 2.88MB format, quick format and a
range of other enhancements.

The Command Center allows users to fully customize their desktop and add
power to everyday program launching. It can read existing Program
Manager groups and convert them to CommandBars, either enhancing or
replacing the Program Manager.  The CommandBars are like tool palettes;
they contain buttons that allow you to launch programs or run macros.

In addition to launching macros and programs, each CommandBar button may
be activated with a "hot-key". By using macros and these hotkeys, a user
can actually redefine their keyboards on an application by application
basis. As an example of this feature, a CommandBar has been provided
that contains most of the XTreeGold 2.5 (DOS) keyboard commands. A DOS
user moving to XTree for Windows can execute commands by typing their
favorite DOS keyboard commands. These keyboard commands are
automatically translated into the appropriate Windows commands by macros.

For more information on the File Manager, please refer to the file
READMEFM.TXT.

------------
Installation
------------

You must use the SETUP.EXE program on the Setup Disk to install XTree for
Windows. The files on the distribution disks are all compressed and have
to be properly decompressed as part of the installation.

Before You Start Setup
----------------------

IMPORTANT NOTE: On some systems, Setup tends to take quite a long time
to copy the files from diskettes. You can ensure the best possible
performance by enabling disk caching for the diskette drive from which
you are installing. For example, if you are using Microsoft's
SmartDrive, at the DOS prompt type:

          SMARTDRV A

to enable caching for drive A.

Starting Setup
--------------

SETUP.EXE is a Windows program and should be launched from the Windows
    Program Manager:

    1. Place the diskette labelled "Setup Disk" in the appropriate drive.

    2. Choose the File Run menu command from the Program Manager menu.

    3. Enter "a:\setup", where "a" is the letter of the diskette drive
where you have inserted the Setup disk.

    4. Choose OK to start the XTree for Windows setup process.

Setup Options
-------------

You are prompted for your name, your company (optional) and your XTree
for Windows serial number. The serial number can be found on the
Registration Card. If you are upgrading from a previous version, use
your existing serial number. If you can't locate your existing serial
number, use the word "UPGRADE" for your serial number.

The main XTree for Windows Setup Options dialog allows you to select
XTree for Windows File Manager, XTree for Windows Command Center, or
both for inclusion in the installation. If you choose both components,
you can install them into the same or separate directories.

The XTree for Windows File Manager Options let you select the data file
(word processor, graphics, spreadsheet database) viewers you want
included in the XTree for Windows installation.

The XTree Command Center Options allow you to install Command Center as
your Windows shell and/or convert your Program Manager program groups
to CommandBars during the XTree for Windows installation. In addition,
you can designate which of the converted CommandBars are to be
automatically displayed whenever you start XTree Command Center.

Setup Process
-------------

    Program Manager Group
    ---------------------

SETUP creates a Windows Program Manager program group, "XTree Apps",
containing the program items, "XTreeWin File Manager", "XTree Command
Center", "File Manager Readme" and "Command Center Readme", depending
on the Setup Options you have chosen. Each of the readme files
(READMEFM.TXT and READMECC.TXT) contains additional information and
documentation errata for the relevant product.

    XTree File Manager
    ------------------

Setup copies the XTree File Manager files you designated into the
destination directory. In addition, the XTREEWIN.CFG configuration
file is placed in the Windows directory.

    XTree Command Center
    --------------------

Setup creates the following directory structure for Command Center:

          XTCC
               AUTOLOAD
               CMBS
               MACROS
               XTGOLD
               XTWIN

The XTCC directory contains the main application program files.
AUTOLOAD initially holds any CommandBars that you want automatically
displayed whenever you start Command Center. If you choose to install
XTCC as your shell, Setup always places STARTUP.CMB (if there is one)
in the AUTOLOAD directory. You can modify which files reside in
    AUTOLOAD at any time.

The CMBS subdirectory initially contains the CommandBars that Setup
converted from Program Manager groups, and that you have not designated
for the AUTOLOAD directory. You can modify which files reside there at
    any time.

The MACROS directory contains sample macros and CommandBars. The
XTGOLD directory contains a CommandBar and macros that provide XTree
Gold keystroke compatibility to the XTree File Manager. The XTWIN
directory contains a CommandBar and macros that automate some XTree for
    Windows File Manager commands.

Setup Error Messages
--------------------

    "Unable to Convert Group File"

The indicated Program Manager Group file could not be converted to a
CommandBar. This usually occurs when an item in the group refers to a
program file or an icon file that no longer exists.

"Could not write to the file name: ..."

This error occurs when you are installing over a previous version, and
that version is currently running. Switch out of Setup and exit the
File Manager or Command Center. Then switch back to Setup and
    continue.
