may not be in the written documentation or on-line help.

INSTALLATION
===========================================================================

The Arabesque installer requires Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups(R)
to be on your path in the format <drive:>\<directory>. To determine if
Windows is on your path, type PATH at the DOS prompt. If the Windows
directory is not on your current path, you can temporarily set it by
typing "SET PATH = <drive:>\<Windows directory>" at the DOS prompt.
If Windows is on your C:\ drive in a Windows subdirectory, you would
type SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS. Reboot your computer after installing Ecco
to restore your original PATH. Do not use the Windows DOS box, as errors
may occur.

To Install Arabesque Ecco:

     1. Start Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups.
     2. In the Program Manager, from the File menu select "Run" and
type A:\SETUP.EXE (if you are using your B: drive, type
	B:\SETUP.EXE)
     3. Ecco installs into the path specified. If the path does not exist,
	one will be created.
     4. If you dont want to run the Ecco Quick Tour after installation,
choose "Skip" to skip the Tour. You can run this at a later time
from the Program Manager or, from the Help Menu in Ecco, choose
	OVERVIEW.
     5. A new program group titled "Arabesque Ecco 1.0" will be created.
     6. A subdirectory named "Template" is created. The template files,
	MANAGER.ECT, LEGAL.ECT, PROJECT.ECT, SALES.ECT and RESEARCH.ECT
are stored here. Finally, the Program Manager icons for the
templates, the Ecco program, the Ecco Quick Tour, and this readme
file are created in the Arabesque Program Group.

If you find you cant install using the Arabesque Ecco Installer, try these
things:
     1. Make sure Windows is on your PATH.
     2. Make sure you have enough hard disk space. (The Ecco installation
requires 8.5 MB. Not all of the files installed are necessary
to run Ecco. If hard disk space is an issue, you may delete the
templates in the Template directory. Although we recommend against
it, you may also delete the following help files: SLIDES.HLP,
	DEMO.DLL and ECCO.HLP).
     3. Disable any Windows shells such as Norton Desktop or PC Tools (There
have been occasional reports of problems installing Ecco when
PC Tools for Windows is active. We have not been able to reproduce
these but are continuing to look into the issue.)

If none of these work, run the install.bat program on the last install disk.
To run the install.bat program, at DOS, type:
     Install <source drive> <destination drive>.

For example, if you were installing from the A drive to your C drive,
you would type: Install A: C:. Note that when you use the Install.bat
program, Ecco will be installed into an Ecco directory at the root of your
hard drive and you will not have a program group or program icons created
for you. If you need to do this, please call Arabesque Customer Support at
(206)855-0559 to report the problem.

HELP
===========================================================================

Ecco ships with a state-of-the-art online help system that contains the
entire User's Guide, fully indexed and cross-referenced with a complete
glossary. For a quick overview of Ecco features, from the Help menu choose
"Overview". For context-sensitive help at any time, choose F1 or click
on the yellow "?" button in the top right corner of any dialog.

For help on the menu commands, from the Help menu choose "Menu Help".
Your cursor will change to an arrow with the text "Choose Menu" below it.
You may then select the menu for which help is desired.

For help on your active view or Folders, choose "Help on this View" or
"Help on folders" from the Help menu.

TEMPLATES
===========================================================================

Ecco templates have the extension ".ECT" and can be opened directly from
the File menus Open... dialog by selecting "Ecco Templates (*.ECT)" from
the "List Files of Type" drop-down list.

Opening a template file will leave the original template undisturbed. A new
document called "UNTITLED_#" will be created containing the view, outlines
and information of the original template. You must save the untitled file
before closing. Do not use the original template file name unless you are
changing the template.

If you wish to modify the contents of any template file, open the template,
make your changes in the "UNTITLED_#" file and save it back to the name of
the original template (for example, "SALES.ECT").

When the File command "New" is chosen, a new document is created based on
the template file "DEFAULT.ECT". This template file can be modified like any
other template to provide custom new file creation for specialized
applications (for example, default folders, views, and so on, for department
standardization). Holding down the shift or control key while selecting
"New" will override the use of this template.

The file "TMPLATE1.ECT" provides a useful configuration for new customers.
It includes predefined views and columns. This template can be accessed by
clicking on the "Starter" icon in the Ecco Program Group, or by choosing
"Open..." in the File menu, choosing the Ecco Template subdirectory and
selecting "Ecco Templates (*.ECT)" from the "List Files of Type" drop-down
list.

The "Template" sub-directory in the Ecco directory also contains 5 custom
templates designed for specific applications: Management, Sales, Legal,
Project Management, and Research. Each of these templates opens to the view
"How to use this Template", describing its use in detail.

USING THE SHOOTER(TM) TO SHOOT NAMES, ADDRESSES AND PHONE NUMBERS TO OTHER
APPLICATIONS
===========================================================================

With a simple modification to your Win.ini file (located in your Windows
directory), you can optionally include phone numbers when shooting names
from the PhoneBook. Using any text editor, (e.g. Notepad) open Win.ini and
search for the [Ecco] section. Notice the line "ShootPhoneNum = #."
If ShootPhoneNum = 1, phone numbers will be included when shooting names
from the PhoneBook. If ShootPhoneNum = 0, phone numbers will not be
included when shooting. Make whatever changes desired, save your Win.ini
and close the text editor.

Also note that if multiple names are selected in the PhoneBook (and no
outline notes are selected), Shooter will shoot the name and address
information (and optionally the phone numbers depending on the setting of
ShootPhoneNum, above) for all selected names. If any outline notes are
selected, then only outline notes and all subordinate outline text will
be included when shooting, and no addresses or phone numbers will be sent.

PREFERENCES
===========================================================================

The default configuration is currently set to create a backup copy of new
files on file close, with 2 backup copies being maintained. "Auto-Save on
File Close" is selected and automatic file saving is set to 10 minute
increments.

You can specify your own keyboard shortcut for activating the Shooter.
When used with the Ctrl + Alt keys, this will activate the Shooter in any
Windows application, as long as Ecco is running. For more information about
the Shooter, please refer to the Ecco User Guide or on-line help.

To view major holidays for the United States, United Kingdom,
Canada (French and English), Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Israel,
Spain and Sweden when in the Calendar view, choose the desired country in
the "Show Holidays for" drop down list. Ecco defaults to the country chosen
in the Windows Control Panel and will change the displayed holidays to
match your Control Panel setting until you specifically choose another
country via Preferences.

PRINTING
===========================================================================

In Calendar and PhoneBook view, page sizes for most DayTimer (TM),
Franklin (TM) and other popular day planners are now available. In the
PhoneBook, many Avery mailing label sizes are supported.

In Calendar view, the user name you specified during installation will print
in the upper left corner of the calendar and the time period in the upper
right corner. The user name can be changed in the Preferences dialog box.

Tickler items do not print on the day of the event; however, if you have
specified the tickler to show for days preceding and following the event,
they will print in the tickler section for those dates. In printing the
Calendar month grid, if a tickler exists for an event that is not in the
printed month, the tickler will show on the first or last day of the month
depending on when the event is scheduled. Also in the calendar month grid,
if there are more appointments than will fit in the space for the specified
date, a plus sign will be printed after the last appointment.

In the PhoneBook view, grid lines print between phonebook entries. If the
phone number columns wont fit on the specified page size, these numbers
will be stacked and right aligned.

COMPATIBILITY
===========================================================================

While every effort has been made to make Ecco compatible with all major
hardware and software, there are some specific situations you should be
aware of.

Users of DblSpace, Stacker or other similar real-time disk compression
utilities may experience longer file save times than normal. The effect is
minimal for most small files, but may be significant for larger files. The
only known workaround at this time is to place your Ecco files in a
non-compressed partition. We are looking into this issue.

If you are using an ATI Ultra Video driver dated before June 1993, you may
encounter conflicts with Ecco. There are known problems accessing disabled
cascading menus when using the 640x480 VGA, 600x800 SuperVGA or
1024x768 with Small Fonts. These problems are believed to be specific to
this driver. ATI is releasing a new driver that will fix these problems.

Applications developed for use in the cc:Mail environment require the
existence of the cc:Mail VIM, SMI and Mail Engine components for the
appropriate platform. Users of the following cc:Mail products will already
have the required files:
	cc:Mail for Windows v. 2.0 or greater
	cc:Mail for OS/2 WPS v. 1.0 or greater

These files must be installed in the Windows directory for correct
performance.

Users of versions of cc:Mail prior to the above products will need to
obtain the cc:VIM Runtime product directly from cc:Mail in one of the
following ways:
	Contact cc:Mail Support directly
Download from the cc:Mail Bulletin board the ZIP files containing
	the VIM files
Download from CompuServe from the LOTUSB forum

PERFORMANCE
===========================================================================

Ecco is a RAM-based program. Running in Windows 386 Enhanced Mode should
provide you with plenty of RAM memory to run very large Ecco files. If you
experience slow performance, make sure you are running in 386 Enhanced Mode.
You can determine this by selecting "About Program Manager" from the Help
menu in the Program Manager menubar.

System Resources and GDI.
Ecco takes advantage of Windows' Graphical Device Interface (GDI) to allow
multiple windowing and to define many views in Ecco. Having more than 25
views open in Windows will effect available GDI system resources. For best
performance, keep only the necessary views open within Ecco.

Networks.
Customers who are using a peer to peer network (such as Windows for
Workgroups) may need to adjust the interval at which Ecco updates
local files which are attached to a group file. Using any text editor,
(e.g. Notepad) open Win.ini and search for the [Ecco] section. Edit
the line: glExLogDelay=3000 to glExLogDelay=5000. Save the changes,
and exit your text editor.

If you are using Novell Netware, you may see better group performance
if you decrease the setting. Values below 500 or above 10000 are not
recommended. It is advisable for all systems on the network to use the
same setting.

CONNECTING WITH OTHER INFORMATION MANAGERS AND HAND-HELD DEVICES
========================================================================

Arabesque has teamed up with IntelliLink Corporation to provide a powerful
connectivity program that allows Ecco and your palmtop to share information
quickly, conveniently, and intelligently. Far more than a simple file
transfer utility, IntelliLink actually recognizes and understands the file
formats of Ecco and the supported palmtops, and can thus translate data
directly from one to the other.

The combination of Ecco and IntelliLink is a powerful information sharing
technology. Arabesque has done substantial work to optimize the links
between Ecco and IntelliLink. For example, changes to appointment dates,
times, or text in your palmtop are automatically reconciled with your
Ecco Calendar. No other Personal Information Manager or Windows application
provides such tight integration with IntelliLink. This is in keeping with
Arabesque's goal to enhance the quality and productivity of our customers'
lives by keeping their information management tasks simple and powerful.

How to Obtain IntelliLink

Send in your Ecco registration card today and call the toll-free Arabesque
Customer Inquiry number at 1-800-457-4243 to ask for your free copy of the
IntelliLink software for Ecco. With this software, you'll be able to
communicate between your personal computer and the following palmtops:

	HP 95LX
	Sharp Wizard

For information on how to obtain the appropriate cable as well as how to
purchase additional functionality (for example, communication between Ecco
and other palmtops, other Personal Information Managers, or other Windows
applications), contact IntelliLink directly at the following address:
