---------------------------------
About Microsoft Scenes README.TXT
---------------------------------
This file contains important information about known problems
in the Microsoft Scenes Pre-Beta Release. You can open this file
in any text editor, such as Notepad. (Scroll through it by
pressing the Down arrow key. Or, if your computer is connected
to a printer, choose the Print command to print it.)

==========================
A WORD ABOUT SCREEN SAVERS
==========================
If more than one screen saver is running at a time, unpredictable
things can happen. Before starting another screen saver, please
exit Scenes. If you use After Dark, please read the After Dark
section of this document.

Never start the Scenes screen saver from the Windows Control
Panel. Instead, start Scenes from the Scenes icon, or, when
you install Scenes, choose to start Scenes automatically
with Windows.

==========================================================
IF YOU INSTALL SCENES AND THE SCREEN SAVER DOESN'T WORK...
==========================================================
The file CTL3D.DLL has not been updated properly on your
system. This is due to a version control problem which
will be corrected in later releases of Scenes.

To correct this problem, first exit Scenes. Go to
\\PRODUCTS1\BETA\APPS\SCENES10.WIN\DLLFIX and copy the
file CTL3D.DLL to your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Then
check your \WINDOWS or \WIN31 directory; if there's a
second copy of this file stored there, delete it.

Note: If you have exited Scenes and you get a Sharing
Violation when you try to copy this file to your hard
disk, another application is currently using this DLL.
Exit any other applications you're using and try to
copy the file again.

==========================
IF YOU'RE RUNNING NT...
==========================
This version of Scenes is not fully compatible with Windows NT.
Several NT-related problems cause GP Faults. We do not
recommend running this beta version of Scenes with NT.

===================================================
IF YOU ARE INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES...
===================================================
If you're installing Scenes from diskettes, please
choose Return to Windows at the end of Scenes Install.
Then start Scenes for the first time from Program
Manager.

If you choose Run Scenes at the end of Scenes Install
and you remove the diskette from your A or B drive,
you will get a recurring System Error (Cannot read from
Drive B) until you exit Scenes and restart it.

==========================
ATI ULTRA DRIVERS
==========================
If you are using either of the two ATI Ultra drivers that use
CRYSTAL fonts, a GP Fault can occur from within Scenes Help.
Many of the Gateway 2000 486s here at Microsoft use the ATI
Ultra cards. If you're using either of the aforementioned
drivers, switch to any of the Ultra drivers that do not
utilize these fonts. Please send an e-mail message to
Rachelb informing us that you do use an ATI Ultra driver
with CRYSTAL fonts.

=============================
NEW MS MOUSE DRIVER, VER. 9.0
=============================
There are two known problems associated with the new MS Mouse
Driver, version 9.0. If you have Snap-to selected, you will
not be able to open the information window by double-clicking
a caption. For this beta release, choose Picture Information
from Scenes' Control menu to view Information Text. In addition,
if you have Screen Wrap selected, it will be difficult to use
the Mouse Quickstart. We are currently investigating both of
these problems.

===========
HELP
===========
Help is now available for the Scenes application. However,
choosing Help from Setup can cause some problems, including a
GP Fault.

Context-sensitive Help for the Wizards is not available in
this release.

==========================
CUSTOM PICTURE SETS
==========================
The shipped version of Scenes will support the addition of .DIB
files, as well as .BMP files. In this release, however, files
with the .DIB extension cannot be added as a custom picture set.

In this version, pictures in custom picture sets may be
dramatically cropped in the Choose Wallpaper dialog. Very small
pictures may appear to be almost entirely black in the Choose
Wallpaper dialog. These problems should be corrected in later
releases.

Always use unique names for your Custom Picture Sets. A GP Fault
may occur if you attempt to use a name that is already used to
identify one of your picture sets.

Please Note: Custom Picture Sets cannot be run as Scenes modules
in After Dark. They can, of course, be viewed as Slide Shows in
After Dark.

==========================
AFTER DARK (TM)
==========================
Scenes Collections will run with After Dark 2.0 or the Star Trek
version of After Dark. This beta release will not run with
After Dark 1.0. If you are using a copy of After Dark that was
acquired through Microsoft's site license, it is probably version 1.0.

There are currently some problems running Scenes modules in After
Dark's Randomizer or MultiModule. Operation may be a bit bumpy.

Please Note: Scenes modules can not be viewed when running After
Dark modules from Intermission.

==========================
MISCELLANEOUS
==========================
In certain situations, the wallpaper palette will degrade to
an unacceptable level. These problems will be corrected in
subsequent releases. You can still send us bug reports on
these problems, though!

Error messages have not been finalized.
