INSTALLATION

If you already have the PC-DOS version of Freedom of Press, you
can install the Windows version also. Simply specify the default
directory, \WINDOWS\FREEDOM, at installation time.

If you already have a version of Freedom of Press for Windows on your
computer, you can either replace it or keep it on the PC along with this new
version. Refer to upgrade instructions in the User's Guide for details.

You must install Freedom of Press from within Windows by executing
SETUP.EXE on Disk 1. There are two ways to do this:

In File Manager, open Freedom of Press Disk 1 and
	double-click on SETUP.EXE.
or
Using the Run... command in the Program Manager's File
	menu, type A:SETUP or B:SETUP.

To prevent installation problems, the installer copies FPSETUP.EXE onto
your hard disk in the Windows directory. After installation is complete,
you can delete this file if you'd like.

The Freedom of Press installer will not work if you do not have
enough system memory. If you get the error "Error <Unable to load text>(n)"
where n is a number, try adding memory and installing Freedom of Press again.

KNOWN PROBLEMS

1) If you are printing files to an HP DeskJet Series printer or to a Canon
Bubble-Jet printer and you selected "Initialize Freedom of Press between files"
in the PostScript Options dialog box, a second file sent to the printer will cause
a problem while the first one is still printing. The second file will interrupt the first.

2) Printing to screen (Output to: Screen Preview) does not show the
object to scale. The aspect ratio is the same as the original but the
absolute distances do not appear to scale.

3) The Helvetica-Narrow SCREEN font looks just like the Helvetica
font in most applications. However, it still PRINTS as Helvetica-Narrow.

4) The SCREEN fonts AvantGarde, AvantGarde-Bold, AvantGarde-Italic,
and AvantGarde-BoldItalic display garbled or missing accented characters
for point sizes other than 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 24 (i.e., the sizes supplied
by Freedom of Press). The utility used to create these screen fonts will be
fixed in a future release. PRINTER fonts are not affected by this problem,
and Freedom of Press will print properly.

5) If you use the After Dark screen saver collection for Windows, you
need to make sure that the System IQ Activity Monitor option is not
selected. Otherwise, After Dark interferes with the functioning of the
Freedom of Press emulation port.

6) Freedom does not support duplexing for the Hewlett-Packard
LaserJet IID and IIID.

7) ColorVantage tables override the settings in the Expert Options dialog
box. ColorVantage uses the "Dithered pixels" screening style.

8) In the Select Files and Output Files dialog boxes, descenders in letters
such as lowercase p, y, and g may be missing from items in the File Names
list. To correct this, exit Freedom and Windows and restart both.

9) Color PostScript language files created on the Macintosh with Adobe
PhotoShop version 2.5 or with Quark XPress version 3.1 print in gray scale.
To correct this, use any text editor to add this line to the STARTUP.PS file:

statusdict begin /processcolors 4 def end

10) In PostScript language files created on the Macintosh with Quark XPress
version 3.1 that contain a linear blend or gradient fill, black prints as white.
To correct this, create a new color in Quark XPress that is a process black--that is,
100% of each primary color (C, M, Y). Use this new black color in the blend.

11) When printing through Freedom's emulation port, Freedom's default name
for files created in Aldus PageMaker 4.0 is "4n.ps," where n is an incremented
number from 0-9. Freedom names files this way because the "Title" field in
Aldus PostScript language files reads "PageMaker 4.0 - XXXXX.PM4." Freedom
captures the first seven printable characters that appear before the first period,
which usually indicates that the file's extension appears next. It then adds
an incremental number to the characters and appends ".PS" to the file name.
Consequently, "4" is the only character Freedom picks up from an Aldus title.

12) Problems can occur when you use a WPD (Windows Printer Description)
with a version of the Windows PostScript Printer Driver (PSCRIPT.DRV) older
than 3.55. Listed below are problems you may encounter with Freedom of
Press. Contact Microsoft to obtain a newer version of PSCRIPT.DRV.

-	(Prior to Version 3.52) Envelopes and EPS files placed in
documents print upside down. To correct:

1	In the WIN.INI file, locate the last occurrence of the
		driver's name.
2	Move the cursor to the end of the next line, which should
		read "orient= ."
3	Insert a new line after that line:
			landscapeorient=270
4	Save the WIN.INI file and try printing your file again.

-	(Prior to Version 3.52) When using Harvard Graphics for Windows
and requesting KernPairs information from the printer driver, a
	General Protection Fault occurs.

-	(Prior to Version 3.51) "User Defined" paper sizes do not work.

To locate the version number of PSCRIPT.DRV that you are using:

1	In the Control Panel under Printers, select a WPD.
	2	Click Setup.
	3	Click About.

The version number appears in the About dialog box.

CHANGES FROM FREEDOM OF PRESS STANDARD FOR WINDOWS
VERSION 3.0.2

1) Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4L is now supported.

2) Canon BJC-800 now has ColorVantage color correction support.

3) Freedom of Press printer driver file (WPD) now includes resolutions
of 180, 300, 360, 600, and 1270.

4) Manual feed, for those printer drivers supporting it, now prompts you
to insert paper and awaits a response before proceeding.

5) The limit for color Windows Printer Drivers is now set to 360 dpi
(dithered), and for black & white, it is now 600 dpi.

6) Auto Print, now an option on the File menu, works in two ways:

-	Prints PostScript language files created in an application with a
PostScript printer driver. The printer driver must be connected
	to Freedom's emulation port.

-	Prints .PS and .EPS files that are placed in the \FREEDOM\PSOUTPUT
	subdirectory.

7) PostScript language files no longer print automatically through
Freedom when you click on a file with a .PS extension in File Manager.
To reinstate this function, in the WIN.INI file under the [Extensions] section,
add this line:

	ps=C:\WINDOWS\FREEDOM\BIN\fpinit.exe ^.ps

NOTE: Replace "C:\WINDOWS\FREEDOM\BIN" with the subdirectory
where you installed Freedom of Press.

8) Error messages about missing fonts include the name of the font not
found.

9) Screen Preview no longer causes General Protection Faults when the
computer is out of memory. Also, only one preview image appears at a time.

10) The drive on which Freedom's virtual memory is located can now be
changed. This helps you prevent out of memory errors when processing
complex files.

11) PostScript screening options are now available through Expert
Options in the Options menu. Refer to Freedom's on-line help for details.

12) Settings are now automatically saved when you exit Freedom if you
select "Save Settings on Exit" from the Options menu.

13) Dialog boxes under the Options menu have been rearranged, with some
options shifted from one dialog box to another.

14) New animated icon, showing an apprentice working a printing press,
replaces the Windows hourglass. You can change this back to the hourglass
by de-selecting "Animate cursor while printing" in the Preferences dialog box.

15) New desktop icons represent the new graphic look of the Classic
product line.

16) CGA screen fonts are no longer supported.

17) Windows 3.0 is no longer supported.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTES

1) Allowing Freedom of Press access to too much Windows memory
(via "Memory Settings" in the Options menu) can cause Windows to
thrash--that is, to access the disk continuously due to low memory conditions.

2) When you configure a printer driver for use with Freedom of Press,
be sure to select "Fast Printing Direct to Port." To do this, select Printers
in the Control Panel. Select a printer in the Installed Printers list box and press
Connect. Select the printer's port in the Ports list box and make sure that
"Fast Printing Direct to Port," located at the bottom of the Connect dialog box,
is selected. Press OK.

3) The error message, "cannot write to LPTn," may occur when you
try to print in automatic mode. (The letter n is a number from 1 to 3.)
This message relates to the [ports] section of the WIN.INI file. This
error can occur when the lines
LPT1:=
LPT2:=
LPT3:=
in your WIN.INI file incorrectly appear after any of these lines:
LPTn.PRN=
LPTn.DOS=
LPTn.OS2=
In other words, the LPTn:= lines must appear before any lines like
LPTn.PRN=.

This error can also occur if the LPT port to which you assigned your
PostScript language printer driver is no longer available in the Printers
dialog box in the Control Panel.
