NEW FEATURES IN APPRENTICE 1.1

HUNDREDS OF NEW CLIP-ART IMAGES

Included with this release of Apprentice are four new Clip-Art categories:
Landmarks, Religion, Dinosaurs and Word & Phrases. In addition, there
are significant additions to the Maps and Music libraries.

ACTIVITY MANAGER

The Arts & Letters Activity Manager gives you instant access to valuable
lessons and activities. All you have to do is pull down the Draw menu and
click on Activity Manager to view the categories. Select an activity library
and click twice on any of the available activities to place it on your screen.

There are nine activity libraries from which to choose any of the over 100
activities: Lessons (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced), Black & White
Samples, Color Samples, Backgrounds for 35mm slides (SCODL and
PostScript), Text Effects and Test files.

All of these carefully planned activities and training aids are instantly
accessible, instantly usable - and available only from Arts & Letters.

BLEND

The Blend command allows you to create a variety of graphic effects by
distributing copies of an object between beginning and ending object.
Blend may be used to create:

        Background color gradients
        Interior color gradients
Evenly spaced copies of an object
        Shading effects to add depth
        Simulated 3D text effects

The objects that define the beginning and end of the blend can be
independently sized, stretched, slanted, and rotated to create dazzling
special effects.

See the Advanced Lessons for "BLEND" in the Activity Manager for more
information about how to use the Blend feature.

CVT TO FREEFORM (F8)

Convert to Freeform converts a selected symbol or text object into a
collection of freeform objects. When you choose "CVT TO FREEFORM",
Apprentice converts the symbol or text object into individual freeform
objects. You can then use the "EDIT FREEFORM" function to edit the
individual freeform objects.

SET START/END POINT

Set Start/End Point lets you specify which point on a closed shape is
the start/end point. You can either place the Set Start/End Point cursor
on an existing point (to designate that point as the start/end point) or
anywhere on the shape (to create your own start/end point). This
feature is useful when binding text to a shape should you want to change
the starting point where the text begins.

See the Activity Manager for a library of precisely constructed curves
and special "text effects"

SHAPE INFO...

Shape Info displays information about a selected freeform object. It allows
you to reverse the order of points (direction the object is drawn) and to
specify the filling rule (the method used to shade an object). It also
displays information about the number of points, line segments, and Bezier
segments that make up the shape.

"Reverse order of points" is useful when you are binding text to a shape,
since it determines which direction the shape - and the text bound to it -
will draw.

GRADIENT FILL PRINTING PROBLEMS

Arts & Letters has two methods for drawing objects with gradient fills to
your printer. If you are seeing problems with the gradient fill extending
outside of the objects boundary, you might try adding a line to the WIN.INI
file (which is located in the directory that contains your copy of Microsoft
Windows) to tell Arts & Letters to use the alternative method. This line
should be added under the [a&l] section: "gradient clip=1". The default value
is "gradient clip=0".
Save the WIN.INI file then restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

MICROFIELD GRAPHICS BOARD

If you are using the Microfield graphics board in 1280 X 1024 mode
you may encounter a problem with the handles on objects. Objects may appear
to be selected when they are not and vice versa. To correct this problem,
add a line to the WIN.INI file (which is located in the directory that
contains your copy of Microsoft Windows). After you have installed
Arts & Letters add the following line in the [a&L] section: "Handles=1".
Save the WIN.INI file then restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

DOCUMENTATION UPDATE

Toolbox Highlight. If you wish to turn off the white highlight on the
tools in the toolbox you can add the following line in the [a&l] section
of the WIN.INI file: "Tool emboss=0". Save the WIN.INI file then restart
Windows for the change to take effect.

Hardware and Software fonts. The Windows WIN.INI file contains separate
parameters for each printer and each printer port installed. For example,
if you have a PostScript printer configured for output to LPT1 and COM2,
your WIN.INI file will contain a [PostScript, LPT1] and a [PostScript,
COM2] section. In order to print a document that contains hardware or
software fonts, the fonts must be installed in the section corresponding
to the currently selected printer and port. If you use the Arts & Letters
"To File" command to print to a file, the fonts must be installed in the
section corresponding to the selected printer on the port FILENAME. A
convenient method of installing fonts to various printer/port combinations
is to install the fonts once, then load the WIN.INI file into Notepad and
Copy and Paste the font information to all of the desired sections.
