============================================================================

1. INSTALLATION

---------------

THIRD-PARTY MEMORY MANAGER LOAD-HIGH LINES OVERWRITTEN

If you are using a third-party memory manager with PC-NFS software,

e.g., QEMM (TM), any lines in AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS that load

PC-NFS device drivers or TSRs into high memory will be overwritten

when you upgrade from PC-NFS Version 4.0a or earlier. After

upgrading, manually edit the lines in AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS so

that these programs will be loaded into high memory. The original

files are saved as AUTOEXEC.mmm and CONFIG.nnn, where mmm and nnn

are three-digit numbers.

RUNNING WINSTALL PROGRAM OCCASIONALLY PRODUCES ERROR MESSAGE

Occasionally when you try to run the winstall program (to install

PC-NFS software for use with Microsoft Windows), the following

message is displayed: "This program requires Microsoft Windows."

If you see this message, run winstall from within Windows.

============================================================================

2. SLIP

----------------

CHECK THE SUBNET MASK AFTER INSTALLING SLIP

You should always check the subnet mask using the /etc/ifconfig command

after installing the SLIP daemon when you plan to use SLIP with a

direct connection. See page 72 of the PC-NFS Serial Communications

Guide for detailed instructions.

============================================================================

3. GENERAL NOTES

----------------

USING RARP REQUIRES HOST FILE

To use RARP, you must have a HOSTS file in the directory from which you

run the PC-NFS software.

PROBLEM WITH FIRST NETWORK COMMAND ON SOME IBM PS/2 MACHINES

If you are using an IBM PS/2 (55 SX) PC with IBM's MC NDIS driver for a

Token Ring adapter, the first network command (usually the NET INIT

command in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file) will not be executed. This is because

the Token Ring adapter has insufficient time to complete a necessary

test. To solve this problem, insert the word "PAUSE" on the line before

"NET INIT" in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, as shown in the following example:

   PAUSE

   C:\NFS\NET INIT

USE LATEST RTM AND RNM MODULES WITH TOOLKIT APPLICATIONS

PC-NFS 5.0 includes new versions of the resident modules (RTM and either

RNMFILE or RNMNIS). If you install an application that was built with

the PC-NFS Programmer's Toolkit after you install PC-NFS software, it

is important to make sure that the resident modules supplied with

PC-NFS 5.0 are not overwritten.

You can check the version of the resident modules by entering:

      RTM -V

      RNMFILE -V or RNMNIS -V

If the version is not 5.0, restore the resident modules by reinstalling

PC-NFS software from the PC-NFS distribution disks.

4. MICROSOFT WINDOWS SUPPORT

----------------------------

PRINTING TO A LOCALLY ATTACHED PRINTER UNDER WINDOWS

When configuring printers to be used with PC-NFS software, it is

recommended that you use the Print Manager. You can do so by selecting

"Use Print Manager" in Control Panel. Print Manager correctly handles

output redirection to a local or remote printer. If you have problems

printing to a local printer (i.e., one attached to your machine), go

to Print Manager and verify that "Print Net Jobs Direct" is disabled.

In Windows 3.1, select "Options" and then select "Network Settings."

In Windows 3.0, select "Options" and then select "Network."

============================================================================

5. MICROSOFT WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS SUPPORT

-------------------------------------------

The version of WFWNET.DRV that shipped with the first release of

Windows for Workgroups (WFW) software does not work with several

networks, including PC-NFS software. A newer version of this driver is

shipped with PC-NFS software.

After installing PC-NFS and WFW software, check the date on the file

WFWNET.DRV in your Windows system directory. If the WFWNET.DRV file in

your Windows system directory is older than the WFWNET.DRV file on

PC-NFS Distribution Diskette 4, replace the file in your Windows system

directory with the one from the Distribution Diskette.

Follow the instructions in Appendix D of the Installation Guide to

install PC-NFS software for use with WFW. If you are installing PC-NFS

software after WFW follow these additional instructions.

Installing PC-NFS Software after Windows for Workgroups

After completing the steps in Appendix D, perform the following additional

steps:

1. After winstall finishes, do not exit Windows. Instead, start up

   Control Panel (in the Main group of Program Manager).

2. Open up the Network icon to display the Network Settings dialog box.

3. In the Network Settings dialog box, choose the Networks button under

   Options, which displays the Compatible Networks dialog box.

4. In the Compatible Networks dialog box, under Available Network Types,

   select "Unlisted or Updated Network" and choose the "Add" button to

   bring up the Install Driver dialog box.

5. The Install Driver dialog box prompts you for the location of the network

   driver disk. You can specify either the network directory you installed

   PC-NFS from, or a diskette drive. If you specify a diskette drive, insert

   PC-NFS Distribution Diskette 3 into the drive. Choose OK. This brings up

   the Unlisted or Updated Network dialog box.

6. In the Unlisted or Updated Network dialog box, select SunSelect

   PC-NFS 5.0, and choose OK. The Network Settings dialog box is

   displayed.

7. In the Network Settings dialog box, choose OK.

8. You are now asked whether you want to restart Windows. Choose

   "Restart Windows," and WFW will restart with PC-NFS installed.

============================================================================

6. MICROSOFT LAN MANAGER 2.1 SUPPORT

------------------------------------

When using PC-NFS and LAN Manager networks at the same time, running

a DOS .EXE file from a LAN Manager drive generates the following error

message:

	Error reading drive alpha

	Abort, Retry, Fail?

Choose Fail to run the program.

============================================================================

7. APPLICATIONS COMPATIBILITY

-----------------------------

DO NOT USE DEFAULT OPTIONS WITH MICROSOFT ACCESS(TM)

You cannot open a Microsoft Access PIM file with the default options.

You must increase the number of lock-table entries to at least 40. To

do this, add the /l40 option to the pcnfs.sys line in your CONFIG.SYS

file, as follows:

   device=pcnfs.sys /l40

============================================================================

8. TECHNICAL SUPPORT

---------------------

When you call for technical support, you will be asked for the serial

number of your PC-NFS software. This number appears in the upper-right

hand corner of your Registration Card. Copy this number to a safe

place where it is readily available, such as the barcode label on the

bottom of your PC-NFS slipcase.
