Release Notes for Image-In Read NNT version 3.0a
--------------------------------------------------

1. This version of Image-In Read NNT will only run under Windows 3.1.
It is not compatible with Windows 3.0.

2. Since the documentation went into print, the following change was
implemented so as to improve the reading speed of Image-In Read.

The automatic switch from Image View window to Text View window has been
deferred until after the image has been completely "read" by the program.
Image-In Read does not switch to the Text View window as soon as the
reading operation begins. Instead, the progress of the reading operation
is now visible as an inversion of the mask. Once the complete mask region
is converted into text, Image-In Read will switch to the Text View window.
However, if you wish to switch from the Image View window to the Text View
window at any time during the reading operation, simply press the
Image View/Text View toggle button in the Toolbar. You will switch to the
Text View window and can observe the conversion of the image into text.

Note : The reading operation is considerably slowed down if you are in the
Text View window.

Windows enhanced mode system configuration
------------------------------------------

If you are running Windows in 386 enhanced mode (this is recommended
for Image-In), you should read the section in the Microsoft Windows
User's manual about setting a permanent swap file. It is very
important to create a permanent swap file of at least 4Mb especially if
you have 4Mb or less memory in your machine.

Before using Image-In with certain scanners (e.g. ALPS, AVR, Canon, HP,
Sharp, Panasonic scanners), you must install the scanner driver provided
with the scanner. Follow the installation instructions in the scanner
documentation.

(*) Important notes concerning certain scanner drivers
-------------------------------------------------------

The following scanner drivers are pre-release versions of the
driver files. They have been included at the request of many
users, who have the scanners, but who require drivers urgently.
If you are using one the following drivers, or wish to obtain
an updated version of one of these driver files, please contact
your distributor or CPI S.A., who will provide you with the updated
driver as soon as it becomes available.

- When configuring the Sharp JX scanner, you must type in the Dev
setting as it is on the interface card and NOT the model number.
By default Dev 7 has been selected. You can choose between Dev 1
  through Dev 7.

- The Seiko driver is a beta release. Certain options may not be
  available or fully functional.

- The Xerox 7650 driver is a beta release. Certain options have not yet
  been implemented.

- The Mitsubishi 7500 driver that is provided in this package is an
alpha version of the driver. This means that although you can scan
an image using this driver, you cannot modify the scan parameters.

Twain driver support
---------------------

In addition to the above list of scanners Image-In now supports Twain
drivers.
If your scanner driver supports TWAIN, you should choose TWAIN as the
installed scanner. Image-In will then use the Twain driver directly.

If you have an HP scanner, you must have version 1.52 (or above) of
the Deskscan driver, to use the Twain driver provided with Image-In.
If your Deskscan driver is an older version, than you should use the
HP driver instead.

If you have a Logitech scanner, you must obtain the Twain source
code from Logitech and install it. Once it is installed, choose TWAIN
as the installed driver in Image-In. Image-In will then access the
Logitech scanner via the Twain source code.

DMA problems and certain scanners
---------------------------------

Certain scanners make use of the DMA, and problems may arise when
these scanners try to transfer big memory blocks to these areas.
If you get a Windows error message relating to the DMA buffer the
following line should be added in the SYSTEM.INI file in the Windows
sub-directory under the [386enh] section:

DMAbuffersize=64

Compatibility problems between Image-In and some VGA cards
----------------------------------------------------------

If you are using a 16-color VGA configuration or another
16-color display adapter that includes VGA emulation, Image-In
will try to control the VGA hardware palette directly, so as to
display gray-scale images in true gray scale mode. On certain
systems you may get an altered screen display. To resolve this
problem, the first step is to uncheck "Use VGA palette" in the
view display dialog box. If you still have problems, add the line

   vga=0

in the [display] section of the IMAGEIN.INI file.

Image-In temporary files
------------------------

Image-In creates a temporary file when there is not enough memory
to keep an image completely in memory. This file is created in the
same drive/directory as the other Windows temporary files. If there
is not enough disk space for the temporary file, you can select
another drive by setting the TEMP environment variable. To do this,
put a line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file as follows:

   SET TEMP=<drive>:\pathname

Using Adaptec SCSI drivers and Image-In
---------------------------------------

The adaptec SCSI driver given with Image-In uses the following Adaptec
ASPI DOS driver:

 - ASPI4DOS.sys for 154x and 164x board,

 - ASPI2DOS.sys for 152x boards.

If you do not have this driver, contact your adaptec distributor to
obtain one.

This device driver must be installed BEFORE the ASPISCSI.SYS
(which is provided on your Image-In disk) in your CONFIG.SYS file.

For example the following lines must be found (in this order) in
your CONFIG.SYS file:

device = [path]\aspi4dos.sys
device = [imagein3 path]\aspiscsi.sys

NOTE: If you have selected a SCSI scanner (and choosen the adaptec SCSI
adapter), the ASPISCSI.SYS will be automatically added to your
      CONFIG.SYS file.

Using a GPIB interface with Image-In
------------------------------------

Image-In is compatible with the National Instruments GPIB interface
that conforms to NI-488.2 specifications or greater. The driver
must be Windows 3.0 compatible and include the GPIB.DLL supplied by
the distributor. If you do not have the GPIB.DLL contact the distributor
to get it.

The GPIB.DLL must be placed in the Windows directory.

Kodak Photo CD Sample Images
----------------------------

Four of the sample images that are included with your Image-In package were
directly imported from the Kodak Photo CD Photo sampler disk, using the
Image-In plug-in module.

The photos are:
1- Motocross Bikes. Photographer: Steve Kelly
2- White Water Rafters. Photographer: Norm Kerr
3- Girl with painted face. Photographer: Steve Kelly
4- Two macaws. Photographer: Steve Kelly
