Some hardware and software applications are not compatible with
FrameMaker. This file contains information about problems that
may occur while installing or running the FrameMaker application.
If you are experiencing problems installing or running
FrameMaker, read this document before you attempt to install or
run FrameMaker again.

For additional last-minute tips and information, open the
FrameMaker Release Notes document after you have successfully
installed FrameMaker.

Installing FrameMaker
=====================

There are no known incompatibilities with the FrameMaker
Installer program. If you experience difficulty installing
FrameMaker, make sure your computer will support FrameMaker;
check Part One of "Getting Started with FrameMaker" for
information on supported system configurations. Then contact
Frame Technical Support.

"Unable to create 'filename.xxx.' Please enter a valid path."
-------------------------------------------------------------

During installation, this error message appears when the
directory youre installing to is read and write protected.
Enable writing to the directory and try installing FrameMaker
again.

"Unable to copy or decompress file:maker.in$"
---------------------------------------------

During installation, this error message appears when the
directory youre installing to is write protected. Enable writing
to the directory and try installing FrameMaker again.

If, after installing FrameMaker, you wish to restrict permissions
to its files and subdirectories, bear in mind that MAKER.INI must
have write permissions and MAKER.EXE must be executable. All
other files may be write-protected.

Re-installing FrameMaker
------------------------

FrameMaker will install over existing FrameMaker application
files if you re-install FrameMaker and choose the same directory.
However, when the FrameMaker Installer program checks to see if
there is enough disk space to install FrameMaker, it does not
account for the space used by the currently installed copy.
Therefore, the Installer may tell you there is not enough space to
install FrameMaker when there actually is sufficient room. If you
encounter this error message, delete the installed copy of
FrameMaker and try installing FrameMaker again.

Re-installing FrameMaker under Norton Desktop
---------------------------------------------

If youre running Norton Desktop and you re-install FrameMaker,
the Installer will create duplicate "FrameMaker" and "Release
Notes" program icons in the "FrameMaker" group. Delete the
"FrameMaker" group before re-installing FrameMaker, or delete the
duplicate program icons after you install FrameMaker.

FrameMaker application incompatibilities
========================================

System BIOS, video BIOS, and hard drive controller BIOS problems
----------------------------------------------------------------

BIOS chips control the fundamental interactions between software
and hardware. Bugs in BIOS chips may cause unexpected problems
when starting and using FrameMaker. For example, older SCSI drive
controllers may not be compatible with Windows 386 Enhanced mode,
and some 8-bit SCSI drive controllers may not be compatible with
Windows 3.0. In many cases, installing a newer version of a BIOS
chip may correct the problem. Your hardware manufacturer or
dealer can help you determine the version numbers of your BIOS
chips and install newer ones if necessary.

Quarterdeck Office Systems DesqView 2.4
---------------------------------------

DesqView 2.4 cannot run Windows in 386 enhanced mode, which
FrameMaker requires. Therefore, FrameMaker will not run under
this version of DesqView.

Windows version
---------------

FrameMaker supports released versions of Windows 3.0 and 3.1. If
you are using a pre-release version of Windows software, be sure
to install an officially released version of Windows before
installing and running FrameMaker.

Upgrading from Windows 3.0 to 3.1
---------------------------------

If you upgrade from Windows 3.0 to 3.1 on a system where
FrameMaker is already installed, your system may begin issuing
"general protection fault" error messages. If you experience this
problem, please report it to Microsoft. Re-installing FrameMaker
will correct this problem.
