OmniPage Professional 2.11 Release Notes

Use 300 dpi Resolution
OmniPage is designed to be most accurate recognizing text scanned
at 300 dpi. Only use 400 dpi resolution when scanning very small text
characters: 4, 5, or 6 points.
Using OmniPage to recognize text scanned at 400 dpi requires 8MB
RAM.

Upside-down Recognition
If OmniPage has difficulty recognizing a page, it will flip the image in
software; it assumes that you may have placed the page upside-
down in the scanner. You may wish to turn this feature off to
recognize a poor-quality image that would generate many
recognition errors such as a FAX or dot-matrix-printed page. To turn
the feature off, click on System in the Defaults menu and de-select
Enable upside-down recognition.
Also, this feature doesn't work well with images that are mostly
numbers; an upside-down 0, 1, 3, 6, 8, or 9 looks like a valid number or
letter.

Windows 3.1 Installations - Creating a Swap File
The method for creating a swap file with Windows 3.0 is different
than the one used with Windows 3.1. Instructions for creating a
Windows version 3.0 swap file are in Chapter 2 of the Owner's
Manual. Use the following instructions if you install OmniPage under
Windows version 3.1.
Windows 3.1 automatically creates a temporary swap file at setup. It
also allows you to change the size of your swap file through the
Control Panel.
1. Start Windows in Enhanced mode by typing WIN at the DOS
prompt.
2. Double-click the Control Panel icon in the Main window of the
Program Manager.
3. Double-click the 386 Enhanced icon to display the 386 Enhanced
dialog box.
4. Click the Virtual Memory button to display the Virtual Memory
dialog box.
This dialog box displays the location, size, and type of swap file. If the
swap file is smaller than 4096KB, make it larger.
5. Click the Change button to expand the dialog box.
6. Select a new drive in the drive list if you want the swap file to be
located somewhere other than on the default drive. For example, you
could store the swap file on a second hard disk that is faster or has
more space than the default.
7. Choose Permanent from the Type list.
8. Type 4096 in the New Size box.
If you cannot find a drive with 4096KB of free, contiguous space, you
will have to delete some files and optimize the disk again.
9. To turn 32-bit access on, select the Use 32-Bit Disk Access box. Not
that this may be unreliable on some battery-powered portable
computers with the computer's power-saving feature enabled.
10. Click the OK button in the Virtual Memory dialog box.
11. Click Yes when asked to verify changes to virtual menory.
12. Click Restart in the Virtual Memory dialog box. You must restart
Windows to make the change. Do not press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart.

DDE Support - How to Run OmniPage Directly From an Application
You can add the Scan Text... command to the File menu of Word for
Windows, Excel for Windows 3.0, and Ami Professional 2.0, and to the
Macro menu of WordPerfect for Windows. Clicking Scan Text... from
within your application will open the OmniPage Scan Settings dialog
box.
This feature is available after you install OmniPage Professional and
run a special macro. The macro is a short program, supplied by
Caere, that you can start from within your Windows application. The
macro tells your application how to communicate with the OmniPage
program and adds the Scan Text... command to your application's File
or Macro menu.
If you install a macro under Windows 3.0, copy the file
c:\opro\ddeml.dll to your Windows directory.
Open, run, and close OmniPage at least once before running a macro.

Appendix D - DDE Support
This Appendix to the Owner's manual is out of date. However, hooks
are available for system integrators to integrate OCR into
applications with a DLL or with DDE messages. If you are interested
in linking other applications to OmniPage Pro, call 1-800-535-SCAN
and request the OmniPage Professional Developer's Toolkit.

Supported Scanners
OmniPage now supports the Dest PC Scan, Apple OneScanner, and
Fujitsu 3096G. OmniPage does not support an automatic document
feeder on the Dest PC Scan 3000 or the Microtek 600G and 600Z.

Patch disk for Pro 2.1 to correct the following bugs:

    1. Verfication window is off center
    2. Remove font information if selected output is WordPerfect
    3. Lotus 1-2-3 converter is wrong
	4. Missing Dbase III converter
	5. Sorted DLL.LST for names in the saveas listbox

In addition to the above the following OPTIONAL switches may be set
in the WIN.INI file within the [OmniPage] section.

RetainFont=YES/NO - this overrides the WordPerfect bug fix
    Mono=some_font_name - default is "Courier"
    PropSanSerif=some_font_name - default is "Helv"
PropSerif=some_font_name - default is "Tmns Rmn"

By changing the above entries in WIN.INI the user can override the code
within WFWLIB.DLL If no entries are found, default values are used.

The Graphic Editor

Compatible Monitors
The Graphic Editor, OmniPage's image-editing software, requires a
VGA or later type monitor. It is incompatible with EGA, CGA, and
Hercules monochrome monitors. Your monitor type does not affect
OmniPage text-recognition features.

Filename Extensions
The Graphic Editor will only open image files that have a correct
filename extension. For example, if you try to open a TIFF file, the
filename must have the extension .TIF. if you try to open a PCX file,
the filename must have the extension .PCX.

Resizing Feature
You can resize a portion of an image as long as you do not change
the image resolution. You can only change the resolution of an entire
image.
