***************************
About Microsoft Windows 3.1
***************************

At the time this README.TXT file was written, Microsoft
Windows 3.1 had not been released. It is important to note
that the Bitstream Font Pack could not be fully certified
and tested against a released version of Windows 3.1.

*****************************
Text Fonts and Headline Fonts
*****************************

The Bitstream Font Pack contains fonts for different uses.
Some of the fonts were designed for text, while some were
designed for headlines, titles, logos, and invitations. Some
work equally well for text or headlines. See the documentation
for a list of text and headline fonts.

Text fonts are designed to be easy to read. As a result,
they are often not very decorative or fancy, although
many are both practical and stylish. The text fonts in
this package come in families of three or four fonts: the
basic (normal) style, and italic and bold variations. The
style variations are useful when you want to emphasize
something, but still be consistent with the text font.
Generally, text should be set in 9 to 12 point.

Headline fonts (also called decorative or display fonts)
tend to be more ornate and complex. They work best at
large sizes when you want to make a distinct impression on
readers. At small sizes, however, they can be difficult to
read.

**************
Font Embedding
**************

Bitstream's TrueType fonts support the Windows 3.1 font
embedding feature. This feature lets you take a document
created with a set of fonts on one computer, and print it
from another computer, without having to install the fonts
on the other computer.

Note: This feature is only for printing a document, not
editing it.

At the time this file was written, most Windows applications
had not yet implemented support for font embedding. Contact
your application vendor for information on the application's
support for font embedding.

*******
Kerning
*******

Bitstream's TrueType fonts support kerning (the adjustment
of space between pairs of characters). However, at the time
this file was written, most Windows applications did not
support kerning with TrueType fonts. Contact your application
vendor for information on the application's support for
kerning TrueType fonts.

**************
Character Sets
**************

To find out the character sets available for TrueType fonts
in your Windows application, contact the application vendor.

*********************************
Screen Fonts at Small Point Sizes
*********************************

Font sizes of 7 or 8 point and below appear as Windows resident
fonts instead of the selected TrueType fonts on the screen.
However, the fonts print correctly.

********************
EGA Display Monitors
********************

EGA monitors have fewer pixels than VGA monitors. This means
that fonts do not appear as precise on EGA monitors as on VGA
monitors. However, the fonts print correctly.
