Chief Dojoepa! Strategy Guide by Lachie Dazdarian, 26.5.2005.

Why this guide?
===============
I made this strategy guide since I found the experience of playing Chief Dojoepa! quite rewarding but felt that some things should have been said in a form of a help guide to make the experience of playing Chief Dojoepa! less frustrating. I tried to finish this game 3 times from the start and I even wouldn't be able to finish it for the third time if I didn't cheated a bit and altered my save game file. This game features quite few traps and things you can do wrong which will eventually prevent you to finish the game. So you need to be careful, save often and on different save game positions.

Things to know(IMPORTANT!)
==========================
When you start the game don't leave your home until you get the spear. The game starts with this "get the spear" puzzle and you NEED to solve it. Despite that you character is drawn like he already carries a spear he does not! If leave your house without the spear you'll get mutilated by them lovely Mud Monsters. To equip a spear do it like it's said in the help. After you pick it up right click on one of the hands(I prefer the left hand) and then left click on the spear and you are ready to kill monsters(with SPACE key; don't hold it; constant tapping). Move Dojoepa by tapping on the arrow keys and not by holding them.

If the village where you start the game there is a well and that well INDEED increases your health(one of the villagers says that to you). You need to stand next to the well and walk toward it(bump into it). There is a 10% chance that your health will be increased by 5 points each time you bump into the well. Just tap toward the well. In my first two attempts to finish the game I was not careful and got the impression that the well does not increase my health. Don't repeat my mistake. You'll need from 30 seconds to 1 minute to restore all of your health, depending on your maximum amount of health points. You can't finish Chief Dojoepa! without restoring your health now and then on the village well.

Chief Dojoepa! features object(like stones or pillars) pushing puzzles(ala Sokoban) and on quite few places in the game you can block a path to a certain location which needs to be reached in order for you to finish the game. So be careful when pushing stones and other movable objects and save before doing that. Don't get all upset with every stone you push but in general be very careful. I'll explain the tricky locations later.

Chief Dojoepa! is full of secret passages in temples and unfortunately you will have to look for them. Do that frequently and accept it as part of the gameplay. Just walk into a wall for which you suspect that might be a secret passage. If you see nothing but blackness on the other side of the wall there is probably no secret passages in that wall. Look in obvious places for secret passages. Explore every temple COMPLETELY unless you still don't have a key which opens certain doors in that specific temple.

Killing monsters does not increase you strength in any way only your score. Most monsters will be revived after you visit a temple or island where you've been before.

To advance in this game you need to pick up every key you find. There is 4 of them in the entire game. You don't use keys on the way you use potions or berries. You need to equip a key(put it in your hand) and move toward a locked door.

How to play the game
====================
The goal of Chief Dojoepa! is to find 4 sun stones and bring them to the altars in the Sun Temples. There are 4 Sun Temples in the game and to enter(unlock) them you need golden idols(golden masks). One temple requires one mask for you to unlock it, one requires two masks, one three masks and the last one 4 masks. When you restore all the Sun Stones to their places you will be able to explore the last pyramid(temple) in which you have to defeat Volgare.

To restore a sun stone carry it in your hand and walk toward the sun alter.

Chief Dojoepa! is not too linear and allows you to play it/finish it on different ways. Nevertheless, it's imperative that you visit the Sun Temples by order(first the one that requires one mask for entrance, then the one that requires two masks and so on). Not obeying this directive will probably leave you in a temple that requires keys you don't have and you can't take back the masks you used to open it. You won't be able find new masks, won't have money to buy new ones and will be left stranded, unable to advance.

Chief Dojoepa! features numerous temples that don't need unlocking so visit them freely to find rune stones, golden masks or even sun stones. Clear all the temples you can visit before visiting the next Sun Temple you still didn't unlocked with golden masks since in those temples you might find a key you still don't have or might find rune stones which will enable you to increase your strength.

To be able to finish this game you have to keep increasing your offence and defense points and your maximum health. To increase you maximum health I advise you to visit the Well of Healing east from the village where you start the game. Drop all the jojo berries you find in that well to increase your maximum health point limits and do that for a while. Restoring sun stones also increases your maximum health point limit. Don't drop coins in wells since you can restore you health using the well in your village. You can sell coins for berries in the shop in north-west corner of your village.

Start the game by visiting the temple south from the Well of Healing. Find a rune stone in it and find a second way out of it to reach the next island. You will have to find few secret passages in the temple south from the Well of Healing to reach that island(tip: room left from the entrance, up-left corner of that room). Explore the small temple on that island. On this island you need to be VERY careful when pushing stones. Feel free to push the two small stones all to the right. You will need to be able to visit the big temple in the north-west part of that island very soon later in the game. The three small buildings on the east of the island are not important for completing the game but I advise you not to block you path to them just in case.

DON'T USE RUNE STONES(!!) to transport yourself back to the village. You need rune stones to increase your offence and defense points by using them with wells of offence, defense or well of gods(really later in the game). First well of offence you will find in the evil forest. There you will find the first Sun Temple(north-east of the forest) and clear it before visiting the temple in the western part of the forest.

Getting back to your village to restore the health without using the rune stone in the beginning is quite difficult since you will usually have very little health points left after "clearing" a temple. Still, you need to start increasing your offence and defense points as soon as possible to be able to "clear" the harder temples. Avoid enemies when getting back to your village wherever it's possible while you are still weak. I found getting back from the first Sun Temple in the evil forest quite difficult but managed to do it. I advise you to accomplish the same thing.

In the entire game I bought one golden idol(golden mask) spending 16 golden coins. Buying a golden idol is quite annoying since you need to drop all the objects you carry and carry only the coins. A drag but necessary. You will have plenty of coins but don't spend them restoring you health on wells. Try to gather them in one area so you can pick them up later every time you need to buy something. Same things with bombs. Your inventory will be often full so try to drop bombs in one area and pick them up later.

You need to visit the King Hicaman's tomb after you find it(Swamp Island) so pay those 8 golden coins to enter it(there is a key in it).

In the last third of the game you will find the Well of Gods(if you don't block the path to it) which increases both your offence and defense points if you drop two coins and a rune stone in it. Try to do that with all the rune stones you can find. You will find plenty of rune stones during the game and should finish it with both offence and defense points above 10. I finished the game with 15 offence points and 11 defense points and 227 health points. No need to get that strong but something close to these numbers for sure.

Later in the game you will become very powerful and getting anywhere in the game will be a peace of cake so the rule of avoiding enemies will not be relevant anymore.

"Tricky" areas and how to avoid path blocking
=============================================
Like previously said, there are many place in the game where you can block a path to a certain area by pushing certain object(s) in the wrong direction or too much. In the temples you will usually instantly know that you made a mistake and will restore the last saved game position. On the other hand, on some places, like on the islands, you can block a certain important path and will find out quite later in the game that you can't finish the game because of it. To avoid that here are some tips.

One area I already explained in the previous section so no need to go back to it.

Second tricky area is a large section of stone walls which can be reached after clearing a temple in the south-west part of the Swamp Island(north exit of that temple). Now, for this area you will need about 6-7 bombs so if you spend all of them go back for few more. This area is not terribly difficult but can be easily messed up. In this area there are 3 important things you should be able to reach. Golden mask in the south-east part of the stone area. Well of Gods in the south-west corner of the stone area. And the most important, exit from the stone area to the west which leads to new temples. You simply need to be careful and save before making any unsure move.

On the Swamp Island you will meet a wizard who will say to you that he is waiting for the Shadow Temple to appear. A temple will appear there(don't know which place or action triggers it to appear but don't worry, it will happen), right above that unmovable large stone so don't push any stones to that peninsula since you might block yourself a path to the temple once it appears.

There is whole bunch of other places in temples which you can mess up but like I said before, you'll know that you made a mistake in those situations immediately.

I probably missed few things but this is more than enough. Enjoy this fun game!
