Nietzsche Special Edition 1.0

Standard disclaimer:

If you think I'm responsible for damage caused by running this free game I made out of the goodness of my heart, you should probably consult your congressman. Beyond that, I'm not really responsible for anything bad that happens, especially since I've tested this code so much any fault probably lies in something you did anyway.

1.2 Speed issues
This game is written to be state of the art qb. That's kind of like
saying "the talented Star trek actor" or "the peaceful George Bush",
but you get the idea. Unfortunately, this has meant the low-rung machine
has been upgraded as well. Nietzsche will run well on any 400Mhz Intel Compatible, and will run fine on a slower Genuine Intel Pentium II. Suprisingly, the engine is faster than the last, but the maps and some of the effects are more demanding. a Pentium system may run this game^ but it's more a matter of tides and currents than any metric I could provide. Give it a shot. It'll either work or not.

To put things in perspective, look at all the uber-cool, ultra fast, hand coded engines out there. Now look at how many of those have half the gameplay of Nietzsche. Yeah.

1.3 BETA status
This is the full version of the game. There's nothing beta about it. Except for the code. And the graphics. and the scripts.
And the gameplay. And the music. But other than that, There's nothing
beta about it.

1.5 Compatibility with alternate Operating systems
Nietzsche was created primarily for Windows 9x/ME systems, but steps have been taken to allow Nietzsche to run under a multitude of dos emulators on other operating systems.
Here are steps needed to make Nietzsche run on various operating systems, or an explaination of why it doesn't work on others.

Windows XP:
The sound will not be the best because Microsoft did a terrible job on their VM. Otherwise, it should run with no problems whatsoever.

Windows NT/2000:
Unless you have VDMSound installed, there will be no sound. Otherwise, it runs perfectly.

Linux DOSEMU:
Runs perfectly, but the sound doesn't work.

dosBOX:
compiled for a 286 or 8088, it works perfectly, if somewhat slowly. However, this game is compiled for a 386 or better processor. Therefore, unless you're willing to recompile it, this program won't run in dosbox as of March 2003.

Windows 95:
run jrpgdos.bat if you don't have a real, bonified MPU-401 compatible sound card to use FM synth music. Perfect otherwise.

Pure DOS:
run jrpgdos.bat if you don't have a real, bonified MPU-401 compatible sound card to use FM synth music. Perfect otherwise.

OS/2 Warp 3.0:
OS/2 Warp 3.0 does not run Nietzsche right now. This may be fixed later, but it seems to dislike the page flipping algorithms. Anyone still using this ancient OS who wants to run

2.0 The console

Don't use the console. It sucks.

2.1 Console Commands

See 2.0

2.2 Tile editor
It hasn't been included because of the huge file overhead it would require. If you *REALLY* want it, post on the Powerusrs Gaming forums at http://powerusr.sphosting.com/

2.3 Map editor
The map editor is included with this release. Play with it if you want, I'm not responsible for any of the crazy crap it does.

3.0 Source Code

The latest Source is included. due to it's size, it will only compile or run under PDS 7.1 (also known as QBX 7.1) or VBDOS 1.0. VBDOS is preferred because the QBX compiler doesn't like JRPG... In addition, extra steps would be required to compile split4, the main game file(name changes every revision), and particle.bas into one file, wheras under VBDOS, it's all done witht he MAK file.

4.0 Planned Features
Gotta be honest -- never want to touch this code again. 72 hours straight is just fine with me.
