How to boot your computer clean

If you're having problems running DP, you might be able to get it
up and running by "Booting your computer clean". By this, we mean starting
up your computer without loading all of the little memory managers and
device drivers that might interfere with the game. It's a relatively
simple process:

- If you have DOS 6.0+ -

Reboot your computer by pressing RESET or Ctrl-Alt-Del. Wait for the
message "Starting MS-DOS..." to come up. Now press the [F5] key.

This will cause DOS 6.0 to bypass all of your TSR's, memory managers,
and other programs which normally occupy main memory.

Now change into the DP directory and begin the game.

- If you have DOS 5.0 -

Please skip this section if you have DOS 6.0 or later!
You need to create a "boot disk" to allow you to start your computer
without loading all the TSR's and memory managers that take away
   memory. Here's how.

   A. Put a blank disk in your A: drive and format it as a DOS disk. (Don't
do this in your B: drive - it won't work!) To do this, type the
      following command:

      FORMAT A: /S

   B. Wait while your computer formats the disk.
   C. Label the disk "Boot Disk" and keep it handy. You'll need this
disk whenever you want to start DP.

Now, you can reboot your computer and play DP:

   A. Put the boot disk in your A: drive.
   B. Restart your computer, either by pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE, by
hitting your reset button, or by turning it on.
   C. Wait while your computer boots from the boot disk.
   D. After a little while, your computer will stop and give you the A>
       prompt.
   E. Now change to your hard disk by typing "C:".
   F. Go into the DP directory by typing "CD \DP".
   G. Begin by typing "DP".

Note to owners of "Stacker", "Superstor", and other hard disk compression
programs: If your C: drive is compressed and you need a boot disk to
start DP, you must install DP on a different, non-compressed drive.
See your Stacker or Superstor manual for instructions on doing this.
(This only applies to users of DOS version 5.0 or earlier).

  General questions & answers

Q: When I run DP, the game refuses to start and gives me the message "You
do not have enough free memory."
A: To run DP, you'll need at least 640K of free conventional memory.

Here's what you need to do:

   1. If you are trying to run DP from Windows, completely exit
Windows and try running it from DOS.

   2. If you are trying to run DP from "DOSSHELL" or any other menu
program, please exit from the menu program. Then, run DP from the
DOS prompt. Menu programs often occupy enough memory that there won't
be enough left for the game.

   4. If none of the above help, you can solve this problem quickly by
"Booting your computer clean". See above for details!

Q: When I run DP, the computer locks up or reboots.
A: Maybe the game cannot use your music card. If you have a Sound Blaster
and the game locks up, try running DP /NOSB to disable the speech.

Q: While playing, I get dumped back to DOS with an error message.
A: This means that either (1) DP is conflicting with your memory
managers and TSR's, or (2) you need more free memory to run DP.
Try booting clean and running DP.

Q: I can't seem to get ANYTHING on the screen. I type DP and the system
   "hangs". What now?
A: Make sure you have the system requirements mentioned earlier in the
manual. If you do, you may have TSR's that conflict with DP. Remove
the TSR's and try running DP with a "clean boot" from a DOS
   diskette.

Q: Who the hell is Wilgelmowitz?
A: Don't ask. Ever.
[Actually, he's Alexander Lentjes. His website is at www.sledheham.com.]

Q: Who the hell is Von Habsburg?
A: Don't ask till 2048.
[Actually, he's Alex van Oostenrijk. His website is at www.matrix-mud.f2s.com
or www.dosx.f2s.com. You can reach him at vanoostenrijk [@] hotmail [.] com.]

Q: What about this cheat stuff?
A: Okay. It's /HARRISONFORD...
But seriously, you can obtain the cheat when you write your PC magazine
stating that you want the cheat published, and we will let them know the
   code!

[ Q: DP won't run and reports "Runtime error 200 at 1171:0091" or something similar.
A: Programs compiled with Turbo Pascal (like Dream Prisoner) won't run on a machine
faster than 200 MHz. You need to run a patch first. This patch comes in the
form of a TSR named prot200.com. Run this file first, then run start Dream
     Prisoner. ]
