Thanks for trying out my latest game, Monster Slayer. This document contains
Monster Slayer help and some other information below.

INSTALLING AND GETTING THE GAME TO RUN:
If you are reading this, then you have already installed Monster Slayer.
That's right, the entire installation process was done when you ran
monster.exe. However, you might experience trouble getting Monster Slayer
to run. Here's how it works:
  1. First of all, you need Qbasic for this program to work. Qbasic is
the programming language that this game was written in, and since
the game is not compiled (in .exe format), you still need Qbasic to
play. Most computers come with Qbasic, so you may have it and not
even know it. If you have DOS, check your DOS directory for qbasic.exe.
If you have Windows 95 or Windows NT, start the Command Prompt, and then
at the command line type in: qbasic [enter]. If you get to a program
with a blue screen by typing that, then you are in Qbasic.
  2. Once you are in Qbasic, press Alt + F for File, then O for Open.
  3. In the window that appears, get to the directory that contains Monster
Slayer (the directory that contains THIS file). You should see 4 files
that can be opened: episode1.bas, episode2.bas, episode3.bas, and
      episode4.bas.
  4. Choose to open the episode that you want to play. I highly recommend
that you start with Episode 1 and then work your way up, but you do
      whatever you want.
  5. Once you have opened the file, hold Shift and press F5 to start the
      game.
  6. The first thing that the game will do is ask you to type in the name
of the drive and directory that contains Monster Slayer. Once you do
that, the game will tell you the rest.

READ THIS:
This game is freeware. That means that you can give it away to people
for free, provided that the game is unchanged. You may not edit the
programming of the game. I would have compiled the program (made it an .exe
file), but it uses up too much memory to be compiled. Therefore, there is no
way for me to prevent you from looking at the programming, but do not
distribute altered copies of the game.
If you have any questions or comments about this game, then please e-mail them
to me at:

But please don't send me e-mails asking me to help you make games. I'm always
working on something new, and I make better programs when I work alone anyway.
If you'd like to get some of my other programs, go to:

I plan to make a program that will let you cheat in Monster Slayer.
It will a separate program that you can download at my home page, and it
will have a menu of options. It will let you do things like play as
the enemies, speed up the gameplay, alter graphics, and many other things.
Look for it at my home page very soon. I'm also working on a cool astronomy
program. It's not a game, but actually a useful program (my first one!).
See my homepage for details.

ABOUT THIS GAME:
Monster Slayer was programmed as a school project. It took a few months to
make. There was originally going to be 8 episodes (including a water stage)
but I ran out of time so I left it with 4. There were going to be more
enemies on the other stages like frogs, wizards, and a lot of dragons (the
game was originally going to be called Dragon Slayer), but instead, there's
two new kinds of enemies on each episode, and four episodes. I call them
"episodes" instead of stages because each episode is like a mini-game. Each
episode has it's own story and ending, so it's like four separate quests.
Two other things that were left out (not because I ran out of time, but
because I didn't think the game needed them) are spells and gold. With magic
your character was going to be able to use a few different spells to do things
like regain health and strike enemies with lightning. With gold, you would
get gold coins everytime you killed a monster, and there would be shops
throughout the game where you could buy things like health potions and new
spells. I hope this game is not too hard; for me it's easy because I made it
but some people might think that the bosses are too difficult. If they are,
then I appoligize, but you can figure out the patterns of the bosses and try
to get to them with as much health left as possible. Wow! You actually read
all this? Here's a clue: try killing the king on episode one and see what
happens.
