Customising the Keyboard
========================

To define your own key selection choose one of the preset key definition files
which are called KEYS1.DAT to KEYS8.DAT in the /DREDD/DAT2 directory. The
format of this file is as follows:

72
80
75
77
42
28
29
56
25

where each number represents the decimal scan code used by the program to
recognise the keys to read. The lines above represent the keys for:

UP
DOWN
LEFT
RIGHT
JUMP
ANTI GRAV
FIRE
CHANGE WEAPON
PAUSE

respectively. Edit this file (using EDIT from DOS) replacing the numbers in
the file with code entries from the table below to specify the key selection
you require.

NB. Please be aware that some key combinations cannot be reliably read on a
PC due to the nature of the keyboard (and this varies from PC to PC), thus we
cannot guarantee that your key combination will work correctly. The only
way to find out is experimentation. Good Luck !!!!

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Failure to load correctly:
--------------------------
The likely causes of Judge Dredd PC not working on your machine are as follows:

1. Insufficient Memory:
The game reqires 520K conventional (or base) memory, and about 2.5 Meg of
EMS memory to be able to run correctly.
To check your current setup type MEM at the DOS prompt - a list of the
different type of memory available and how much of each type is free
   is displayed.
If you have less than 520K of Conventional memory free then either remove
some TSR programs from your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files (consult
your DOS manual for details on how to do this) or use a memory manager
such as MEMMAKER which comes with DOS - again consult your DOS manual for
instructions, or a commercial memory manager - see your local software
   stockist for details.
To see how much EMS memory you have available is a little more complicated.
When you type MEM if you see a category called Expanded memory then make
sure it shows at least 2,500K free.
If an Expanded category is not shown then look at the Extended memory
category again make sure this shows more than 2,500K. If your system shows
that all the Extended memory is Used then the likelihood is that your system
does not have any extended or expanded memory drivers installed - in this
case consult your DOS manual for information on how to install an extended
   memory manager such as EMM386.EXE.

2. You do not have the game CD in the CD drive from which the game was installed

3. The CD drive letter has changed since you installed the game. In this case
you can either re-install the game, or edit the PATH.TXT file in the DAT2
directory to be the new letter of your CD drive.

4. Your hard disk is completely full and the game cannot create its temporary
   work files.

5. You have accidentally deleted some of the file kept on the Hard Disk - in
this case re-install from the original game CD.

6. You have incorrectly identified the Sound Card and related questions (DMA,
IRQ & Address). Check your system and then re-install entering the correct
   settings.

7. You have deleted the PATH.TXT file. This file is created during installation
and tells the game the letter of your CD-ROM drive (eg:D,E, etc). You
should either re-install from the original game CD or create the file
in the DAT2 directory using EDIT or a similar text-editing application.

The Game takes a very long time to load:
----------------------------------------

The 2 most likely causes of this are:

1. You do not have SMARTDRV installed on your system.
We do recommend that users are running smartdrv with Caching from both your
hard drive and your CD drive enabled. See you DOS manual or type
HELP SMARTDRV for instructions on how to setup and use Smartdrv.
Smartdrv can make the game load up to 4 times quicker than when not using it.

2. Your Hard Drive is very fragmented.
Users running DOS 6.0 or later can make use of a built in DOS command called
DEFRAG to help defragment your hard disk - see the DOS suer guide for
instructions. Other commercial programs are also avialable to defragment hard
   disks.
