"Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach" developed by Sunstorm Interactive Inc.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for purchasing "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach" for Duke Nukem 3D.
This help file will aid you through the installation process of the "Duke
Caribbean: Life's a Beach" add-on pack and the GAMER (Game Add-on Manager)
program. GAMER was written specifically to install add-on packs (.SSI files)
developed by Sunstorm Interactive for many current games on the market.

The "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach" add-on pack will replace Episode 3 in
Duke Nukem 3D. The Caribbean DeathMatch maps are accessible through Episode
2 in Duke Nukem 3D.

Installing "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTICE!
Please note that the "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach" add-on is designed and
tested for Duke 3D version 1.3d, 1.4 and 1.5. Any other updates made to Duke
after the release of this are not tested or supported for this add-on.

NOTICE!
The "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach" add-on episode is a new episode that
changes much of the original functionality of Duke Nukem 3D. When you wish to
play the Duke Caribbean add-on, use the 'carib.exe' program to launch Duke! It
is NOT RECOMMENDED that you attempt to play any other episode or level while the
Duke Caribbean episode is loaded!

----------
INSTALLING
----------

To run the install program, make sure the "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach" CD
is in your CD-ROM drive and type #:\INSTALL. Replace # with the letter of your
CD-ROM drive.

The install program will begin with a title screen explaining a little
information about this product. Press <ENTER> after reading this and the
program will then begin collecting information needed to install the
add-on pack.

One thing to remember, you can hit <ESC> at anytime during the installation
process and exit without any changes being made to your computer. The only
time this is not true, is when the files are actually being copied over
and the GAMER software is being setup.

Another thing to remember, you can install GAMER on one drive, say the
E: drive... and still have Duke Nukem 3D on a different drive, say the
C: drive. This is, assuming both of those drive letters are valid.

The first step is to either locate the GAMER software, or create a new
location for it. GAMER is designed to work with any add-on pack developed by
Sunstorm Interactive for any game. Thus, it is best to keep it in a directory
by itself, rather than with Duke Nukem 3D. The suggested directory location
is C:\GAMER or C:\GAMES\GAMER

The installer will attempt to detect the GAMER software automatically. If
it is unable to locate it, then you will be prompted to type in a directory
where the GAMER software is located or you would like to install it into.
Type in the appropriate directory (including the DRIVE letter) and press
<ENTER>. If the directory is acceptable, then a window will appear stating
that everything is valid, and if you wish to accept the directory. Select
yes to move on in the installation process or no to enter a new directory.

The installer will attempt to locate a copy of Duke Nukem 3D. If it does,
a window will appear asking if you wish to accept this. If this is the
copy/version of Duke you play then select yes. If you select no, or the
installer cannot find a copy of Duke a window will appear asking you to type
the path where Duke Nukem 3D is located on your hard drive. Duke Nukem 3D MUST
be installed, otherwise the install program will not accept a directory and
the GAMER software will not be installed. This is to prevent future problems
that could be caused by Duke not being installed.

Note: If you have more than one version of Duke installed, and it detects a
different version than you want to install the add-on for, then simply enter
the correct directory for the other version. This allows you to install Duke
Caribbean for both the regular version and the Atomic editions of Duke.

You will then be told installation is about to begin. Hit <ENTER> to continue
or <ESC> to exit the install process.

The new "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach" add-on pack will then be copied
over. If you already have a copy of the GAMER software on your computer,
the installer will detect if it is older or newer than the one on the
installation disk. If it is older, the new version will be copied over,
otherwise the one on your computer will be left alone.

When the files are finished copying over, the installation process is
complete. Be sure to read the readme.txt that was copied into the GAMER
software directory during installation. It will give detailed instructions
on installing, un-installing and removing add-on packs for your games.

We hope you enjoy "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach". Be sure to look for other

Duke Nukem Plutonium Pack & Duke Atomic Edition
In the "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach" add-on episode, we've changed most
of the weapons that are included with the game. If you are playing with the
Plutonium Pack or Duke Atomic Edition, the 'Expander' weapon will not function
properly and should not be used!

Duke Caribbean uses a much newer version of the GAMER add-on management software.
If you purchase our add-on "Duke it out in D.C." AFTER you have installed
"Duke Caribbean", then you must follow these simple steps to get them to work
together:

1. First, you should reinstall Duke Nukem 3D in a fresh, clean directory
2. Next, you should install the "Duke it out in D.C." add-on episode.
3. Then, install the "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach" add-on episode.

This will insure that both episodes can be installed into Duke Nukem 3D without
creating conflicts.

Problems, fixes, workarounds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you experience any problems installing "Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach",
read below for possible solutions and workarounds.

-Q I can't get the installer to recognize my Duke Nukem 3D directory! What
   do I do now?

-A First, make sure that Duke Nukem 3D is currently INSTALLED on your
computer. Secondly, the installer looks for a .CFG file to verify the
existence of Duke on your computer, and to detect which version of Duke you
have. Since you cannot run Duke without a .CFG file, the installer assumes
   you will have one.

-Q I can't get the installer to recognize my GAMER directory! What do I do?

-A The installer looks for a file name GAMER.INI to verify the existence
of the GAMER software. You can't run the GAMER software without it, so
just make sure it is in the directory when installing. If you still cannot
get it to work, you will most likely need to install it in a new place.

-Q I keep trying to make a directory to install the GAMER software into,
but the installer won't accept it. Why?

   -or-

I can't type enough characters for the directory I want to install the
GAMER software into. How do I fix this?

-A First of all, the maximum number of characters the installer allows you
to type is 60. The Duke Nukem 3D installer did this, as do many other
installers. Secondly, the installer only allows you to create one new
subdirectory from the one you are installing. So, in other words... if
you have a directory called C:\GAMES

This is an example of a valid directory to install to:
   C:\GAMES\GAMER

This is an example of an invalid directory to install to:
   C:\GAMES\ADDONS\GAMER

Unless of course, you already have a directory called ADDONS as a
   subdirectory of GAMES.

-Q Duke Caribbean crashed while I was playing it! Should this happen, it
will leave your Duke Nukem 3D game in an unstable configuration. You
may not be able to play Duke until you correct this problem.

-A There is a simple solution to correcting this problem. All you need to
do is rerun the 'carib.exe' file. Now you can play the new episode as
normal or use GAMER to activate / decativate the episode.
