Installing `CRYPTIC PASSAGE'
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that the `CRYPTIC PASSAGE' add-on is only tested and designed
for BLOOD version 1.02. Any other updates made to BLOOD after the release of
this are not tested or supported for this add-on. It might work on a later
version, and it might not. Should you need to know, please look at the bottom
of this file for contact information.

To run the install program, make sure the `CRYPTIC PASSAGE' CD is in your
CDROM drive and type #:\INSTALL. Replace # with whatever the letter of your
CDROM drive is.

The install program will begin with a title screen explaining a little
information about this product. Press <ENTER> after reading this and the
program will then begin collecting information needed to install the
add-on pack.

One thing to remember, you can hit <ESC> at anytime during the installation
process and exit without any changes being made to your computer. The only
time this is not true, is when the files are actually being copied over
and the GAMER software is being setup.

Another thing to remember, you can install GAMER on one drive, say the
E: drive... and still have BLOOD on a different drive, say the
C: drive. This is, assuming both of those drive letters are valid.

The first step is to either locate the GAMER software, or create a new
location for it. GAMER is designed to work with any add-on pack developed by
Sunstorm Interactive for any game. Thus, it is best to keep it in a directory
by itself, rather than with BLOOD. The suggested directory location
is C:\GAMER or C:\GAMES\GAMER

The installer will attempt to detect the GAMER software automatically. If
it is unable to locate it, then you will be prompted to type in a directory
where the GAMER software is located or you would like to install it into.
Type in the appropriate directory (including the DRIVE letter) and press
<ENTER>. If the directory is acceptable, then a window will appear stating
that everything is valid, and if you wish to accept the directory. Select
yes to move on in the installation process or no to enter a new directory.

The installer will attempt to locate a copy of BLOOD. If it does,
a window will appear asking if you wish to accept this. If this is the
copy/version of BLOOD you play then select yes. If you select no, or the
installer cannot find a copy of BLOOD a window will appear asking you to type
the path where BLOOD is located on your hard drive. BLOOD MUST
be installed, otherwise the install program will not accept a directory and
the GAMER software will not be installed. This is to prevent future problems
that could be caused by BLOOD not being installed.

Note: If you have more than one version of BLOOD installed, and it detects a
different version than you want to install the add-on for, then simply enter
the correct directory for the other version. This allows you to install
'CRYPTIC PASSAGE' for different versions of BLOOD.

**********************************************
INFORMATION ON BLOOD VERSION 1.02 AND PATCHES!
**********************************************
If your version of Blood is not 1.02, you will be prompted to run the included
patches to upgrade your version of Blood, so that Cryptic Passage will work.
Simply hit <ENTER>, it will detect which patch you need to run on its own.
The patch will ask "Where is the system located", simply type in the full
path of where your Blood is located on your computer. Then hit <ENTER>
and the patch will run. Depending on your system, times will vary, but it will
take a few minutes to complete. Once it is done (a whole lot of text will go
by and it will tell you it is done) simply hit <ENTER> and Install will run
again to help you install Cryptic Passage with your newly patched Blood.

You will then be told installation is about to begin. Hit <ENTER> to continue
or <ESC> to exit the install process.

The new `CRYPTIC PASSAGE' add-on pack will then be copied over. If you
already have a copy of the GAMER software on your computer, the installer
will detect if it is older or newer than the one on the installation disk.
If it is older, the new version will be copied over, otherwise the one on
your computer will be left alone.

When the files are finished copying over, the installation process is
complete. Be sure to read the readme.txt that was copied into the GAMER
software directory during installation. It will give detailed instructions
on installing, un-installing and removing add-on packs for your games.

We at Sunstorm hope you enjoy `CRYPTIC PASSAGE' Be sure to look for

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to install `CRYPTIC PASSAGE' and GAMER if the install program fails
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you take this a step at a time, it is pretty long, but fairly straight
forward. Please don't try to skip sections, as you might miss something that
seems minor, but winds up causing things to get crazy.

This assumes that you already know the basics about DOS, switching drives,
making directories, copying files, etc.

If a version of GAMER is already installed, skip this part and go to the next
portion about "IF A VERSION OF GAMER IS ALREADY INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER".

***************************************************************
IF A VERSION OF GAMER IS *NOT* INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER YET
***************************************************************

1) At the DOS prompt, or in Windows DOS box, go to the drive you wish to
install the GAMER software and `CRYPTIC PASSAGE'. This is usually the same
drive as where BLOOD and your other games are installed.

2) Make a new directory to put the GAMER software into. Preferably #:\GAMER
or #:\GAMES\GAMER where # is the letter of the drive to install to.

3) Go to the `CRYPTIC PASSAGE' CD, and change directories into the CRYPTIC
directory. You should see five files:

CPINTRO.TXT
CRYPTIC.SSI
GAMER.EXE
README.TXT
GAMER.INI

4) Copy GAMER.EXE, README.TXT, and GAMER.INI files into the new directory you
made on your hard drive, and then go to your hard drive and the directory that
you just copied those files into.

5) Using DOS Edit, (type EDIT GAMER.INI at the DOS prompt), you will make
changes to the GAMER.INI file that will allow it to have access to BLOOD.
When you open up the GAMER.INI file in Edit, you will see this:

A whole bunch of lines starting with //. Look for the line that looks like:

// End of text header

The section you will need to work with follows that line, and looks like this:

1.01
1
BLOOD <version>
BLOOD<version>
NONE
<blood directory>

Leave the first and second lines alone. Line one is the version of GAMER,
and line two tells GAMER how many games you have add-ons installed for.

On the third and fourth lines, just delete the <version> part. Since `CRYPTIC
PASSAGE' will work for only BLOOD 1.02, this is not needed. Thus,
the third and fourth lines would read:

BLOOD
BLOOD

Leave the 5th line alone... this denotes what add-on is currently installed
for that game.

On the 6th line, change <blood directory> to the directory path where you have
BLOOD installed. Be sure to put the drive letter, and a final \ when
typing the directory.

Example: C:\BLOOD\

Although it doesn't _have_ to be in all caps, it is advisable.

6) Save GAMER.INI and exit DOS Edit.

7) Now, you need to make a new directory to put your new BLOOD add-on
packs into. The one to use is BLOOD. So the new directory structure
would be, for example, something similar to:

C:\GAMER\BLOOD

8) Move on to the section titled "INSTALLING `CRYPTIC PASSAGE'
FOR GAMER".

*************************************************************
IF A VERSION OF GAMER IS ALREADY INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER
*************************************************************

1) Go into your GAMER directory, and open up the GAMER.INI file in DOS Edit
(type EDIT GAMER.INI at the DOS prompt). Now, look for some text similar
to this:

BLOOD <version>
BLOOD<version>
NONE
<blood directory>

If it doesn't exist, then you will need to make modifications. If it does
exist, then there is nothing you will need to change. Skip these next few
steps and move on to the section titled "INSTALLING `CRYPTIC PASSAGE'
FOR GAMER".

2) On the second line, you should see a number. Just add one to this number,
and change it.

Example: Change 4 to 5

3) Now, you need to insert this text on the line after the one you just
modified.

BLOOD <version>
BLOOD<version>
NONE
<blood directory>

On the first and second lines, just delete the <version> part. Since `CRYPTIC
PASSAGE' will work only for BLOOD 1.02, this is not needed. Thus, the first
and second lines would read:

BLOOD
BLOOD

Leave the 3rd line alone... this denotes what add-on is currently installed
for that game.

On the 4th line, change <blood directory> to the directory path where you have
BLOOD installed. Be sure to put the drive letter, and a final \ when
typing the directory.

Example: C:\BLOOD\

Although it doesn't _have_ to be in all caps, it is advisable.

Now, you should have something that looks similar to this in the file:

1.0
2
BLOOD
BLOOD
NONE
C:\GAMES\BLOOD

If not, please go back and double check that you did every step as instructed.

Ok... now, modify the very first line to read 1.01. This is an upgrade version
of GAMER, so if you do not modify this, and you happen to install another
add-on, such as `Duke It Out In D.C.' it might not function properly anymore.

4) Save the GAMER.INI file, and exit DOS Edit.

5) Now, you need to make a new directory to put your new BLOOD add-on
packs into. Use the directory name BLOOD. Please note, these should be
subdirectories of your GAMER directory. So, the structure of the directory
would be, for example, something similar to:

C:\GAMER\BLOOD

6) Move on to the section titled "INSTALLING `CRYPTIC PASSAGE'
FOR GAMER".

********************************************
 INSTALLING `CRYPTIC PASSAGE' FOR GAMER
********************************************

1) This assumes that you have already installed the GAMER software, and that
that portion of the installation is correct. Now, go into the `CRYPTIC
PASSAGE' CD, and into the CRYPTIC directory. You should see an .SSI file
named:

CRYPTIC.SSI

2) Now, this part is _really_ easy. Simply copy your SSI file into the
directory where your BLOOD SSI files are stored for GAMER to access.
So, say your GAMER software is located in C:\GAMER, then you would copy your
SSI file into:

C:\GAMER\BLOOD

3) GAMER will automatically detect the new add-on and display it in the
activation menu screen.

Well... that's it! Now this is a perfect example of why we write programs to
install things for us. ;^)

Problems, fixes, workarounds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you experience any problems installing `CRYPTIC PASSAGE', read below
for possible solutions and workarounds.

-Q I can't get the installer to recognize my BLOOD directory! What
   do I do now?

-A First, make sure that BLOOD is currently INSTALLED on your computer.
Secondly, the installer looks for a .CFG and an .RFF file to verify the
existence of BLOOD on your computer, and to detect which version of BLOOD
you have. Since you cannot run BLOOD without a .CFG or .RFF file, the
installer assumes you will have one.

-Q I can't get the installer to recognize my GAMER directory! What do I do?

-A The installer looks for a file name GAMER.INI to verify the existence
of the GAMER software. You can't run the GAMER software without it, so
just make sure it is in the directory when installing. If you still cannot
get it to work, you will most likely need to install it in a new place.

-Q I keep trying to make a directory to install the GAMER software into,
but the installer won't accept it. Why?

   -or-

I can't type enough characters for the directory I want to install the
GAMER software into. How do I fix this?

-A First of all, the maximum number of characters the installer allows you
to type is 60. If you really need more characters, then read the section
above on manually installing the GAMER Software.
Secondly, the installer only allows you to create one new subdirectory
from the one you are installing. So, in other words... if you have a
   directory called C:\GAMES

This is an example of a valid directory to install to:
   C:\GAMES\GAMER

This is an example of an invalid directory to install to:
   C:\GAMES\ADDONS\GAMER

Unless of course, you already have a directory called ADDONS as a
   subdirectory of GAMES.

-Q I've done all this stuff, and I still can't get the dang thing to install
correctly. Can I manually install the add-on?

-A Yes, you can manually install it, but will take a little bit of work on
your part. Please read the section above about installing should the
   install program fail.
