S.T.O.R.M. by Virtual Studio and American Softworks

As the game S.T.O.R.M. was being developed, our instruction manual was
being printed. This standard practice often results in the final game being
slightly different than the manual. These differences are typically issues
about compatibility, or a feature being modified slightly. Please read the
following information for up-to-date information about the game.

New Minimum Specifications:
Pentium PC
8 Mb of RAM
460K of conventional memory, 6,690 Kb of XMS memory
10 Mb of free hard drive space
Double speed CD-ROM drive
100% Sound Blaster Compatible Sound Card
1MB SVGA PCI bus Video Card

Known Hardware Problems:
Some Video and Audio cards, as well as some machines, are incompatible
with S.T.O.R.M. Please refer to the following list:

- Incompatible Video Cards (DOS Version):
Diamond Viper.
All video cards based on the Weitek P9xxx chipset.
Cloud 9.
Matrox Millenium.
ATI Mach 64.
Hercules Stingray.

* Note * The above video cards are incompatible with the DOS version,
but ARE COMPATIBLE with the Windows version provided on the same CD-ROM.
So if the DOS version doesn't work on your system, try installing the Windows
version. Type WIN <Enter> from the C:\prompt. Run the File Manager and go to
the CD-ROM drive (typically D:). Double click SETUP.EXE on STORM CD #1,
located in the root directory. Then follow the setup instructions.

- Incompatible Sound Cards:
Adlib Gold 1000 (MPC1)
Audiotrix Pro w/ Mediatrix v1.0 drivers (MPC2)
The Diamond TeleCommander 2300 might not work under Windows.
Pro Audio Studio 16

Sound Card Setup:
When using the auto detect function in the sound setup program, you will see
a warning about SCSI drives. This is generally not a problem, but it is
advisable to make sure your data files are ALWAYS backed up.
Hit <Enter> to proceed.

Using auto-detect with a Gravis Ultrasound card will cause your system
to reboot. To prevent this problem, select the card manually from the list
of supported cards under Select Sound Card. This means you need to know
what type of sound card you are using, its port address (usually 220),
its DMA channel (usually 1), and its IRQ setting (usually 5).
Most computers will display the port and IRQ information used by the
installed sound card during boot-up. From the sound card installation
screen, simply select your sound card from the list (use the mouse or
arrow keys to highlight the card, then press <Enter>), and choose the
proper port, DMA, and IRQ setting. Then select OK <Enter>, OK <Enter> again,
and Save the System Configuration. STORM is now ready to run.

* Note * If you are experiencing problems, try loading the SBOS driver
for making your sound card Sound Blaster compatible.

CD-ROM Drives:
The Reveal GCD R420B CD-ROM drive is incompatible with STORM.

Memory Related Issues:
This program needs at least 8 MB of memory to run. If you have any TSR or
other memory resident programs that use a lot of memory, it is advisable that
you create a boot disk to run the game (see "Creating a Boot Disk below).
If you feel that the memory configuration of your system needs adjusting,
run MEMMAKER from DOS and follow the instructions.

Removing the EMM386 driver from your CONFIG.SYS may help the game to run
smoother if you are having problems.

Windows 3.1 & Windows for Workgroups 3.11 Memory Issues:
If you notice the screen jittering during gameplay, try increasing the size
of your swap file. This is accessed under the Control Panel, 386 Enhanced
icon, Virtual Memory setting. A temporary swap file of at least 8120 KB
is recommended.

Today's PCs run with millions of different hardware and software combinations.
Because of this, you may also have to refer to your computer dealer or
hardware manufacturer in order to properly configure their product to run
with our game. When you call, if at all possible, be near your computer.
If it is not possible, make sure you have the following information ready:

1/ The error message displayed when the problem occurred (if any).
2/ A listing of your machine type and hardware contents, including CPU, sound
   and video board details.
3/ The Operating System type, and version number you are currently running.
4/ Your mouse and driver type (if applicable).
5/ The contents of your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files from drive C:\
(and drive A:\ if you have attempted to create a boot disk).
6/ Your CD-ROM drive type and CD-ROM extensions and driver versions.
7/ The contents of a MEM/C statement.

Other Technical Information:
When you start a game, S.T.O.R.M. defaults all cinematic sequences to lo-res
mode. To experience the best visuals, you may change the cinematics to hi-res
mode under Options/Scalability. However, depending on your system, you may
experience pixelation or other video problems. In that case, simply change
the setting back to low-res.

Installing STORM running Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroup 3.11:
If your system does not have Win32s or WinG installed, you will be prompted
to install either Win32s or WinG.

Installing STORM running Windows 95:
If your system does not have WinG installed, you will be prompted
to install WinG.

STORM for Windows 95:
Installing the Windows version for Windows 95 provides the greatest
compatibility. Installing the DOS version (run in a DOS box) will provide
the best video performance, but might have a compatibility problem.

Boot Disk Creation:
In the event that the game will not run properly, you may want to try
creating a Boot Disk. This is not recommended for new PC owners.

* Caution * Before you proceed, make sure you follow the instructions
EXPLICITLY. Any mistakes could cause serious data loss on your computer.
If you are not experienced with the DOS Edit program, or other text file
editing software, it is advisable to call in someone with this experience.
American Softworks Corporation is not responsible for any data loss
that might occur on your system when Boot Disk Creation is attempted.

* Note * As you will have to copy information from your current set-up,
it would be advisable to get a hard copy print-out of the files AUTOEXEC.BAT
and CONFIG.SYS located on the root directory of your hard disk
(locate by DIR C:\CONFIG.SYS etc.). Before you do this, make sure your
printer is connected. To print out a hard copy from your root directory
(C:\), type TYPE AUTOEXEC.BAT > PRN. Repeat this process for your config.sys
by substituting AUTOEXEC.BAT with CONFIG.SYS. You should now have a hard copy
of both your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.

Take a new floppy disk and put it in the A: drive. from the C:\ prompt,
type: FORMAT A: /S <Enter>. This will format the floppy to be bootable.

Using a text editor, create the following two files on the floppy drive.

Create the A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT File to read:

	PROMPT $P$G
	PATH C:\DOS
	C:\DOS\MOUSE.COM
	C:\SB16\SB16SET /P /Q
	C:\BIN\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001

* Note * The last two lines are generic. Look at the printout of the
C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Look for the two lines which have similar text.
These lines are how your sound card and CD-ROM driver need to be set up.
Copy them EXACTLY as they are into the A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Save this
file onto the A: drive (the floppy), which should be its default.

Create the A:\CONFIG.SYS file:

	DOS=HIGH
	BUFFERS=30
	FILES=30
	DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
	DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS
	DEVICE=C:\DEV\CDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001

* Note * As in the A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file above, the two last lines are
generic. Refer to your C:\CONFIG.SYS file for the proper text.
