1. The WCST Nethack Newsletter and Spoilers
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings everybody, and happy hacking! This is the second edition of the
ill-fated WCST Nethack Newsletter. It was originally going to be a monthly
thing (when the first one came out a year ago), but I kind of got majorly
bogged down in other things -- especially work in the real world. (I know
we'd all much rather just stay in our Nethack worlds, right?)

Anyways, Nethack version 3.1 is now officially out, and many many posts are
flying all over the place about it, so I thought it would be good to "make my
presence felt," as it were. This edition of the WCST Nethack Newsletter
contains several pieces of information. First, it contains the new WCST
e-mail and U.S. mail addresses. Second, it contains information about what's
going to be happening with the Spoilers. Third, it contains a large section
detailing a large number of things that have changed in version 3.1 of
Nethack.

Incidentally, if you'd like to be placed on the WCST e-mailing list, please
send me e-mail with your address. I'll tack you onto the list and send you a
reply back to verify that I can get through to you.

3. Revision 8.00 of the Spoilers
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are busy at work on Revision 8.00 of the Spoilers. Ken Roth, one of the
original members of the spoiler team (kroth@wheaton.wheaton.edu) has once
again joined forces with me so that we can get this new version of the
Spoilers out in record time.

We hope to have at least a preliminary version available by the end of
February or the middle of March, but don't shoot me if I'm wrong.
Submissions or suggestions are always welcome.

Once again, we will be releasing both a public and a commercial version of
the Spoilers. The public version will contain all of the information
contained in the commercial version, in straight ASCII text. The commercial
version will be desktop published and bound with considerable artwork, an
excellent index, etc. More information will be forthcoming when revision
8.00 is ready to roll.

4. Changes in 3.1
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
As some of you have undoubtedly discovered, the Dev Team has made *extensive*
changes in version 3.1. This is a brief overview of some of the many
changes, and includes screen shots of several of the new levels:

1) Many new items have been added to the game, including candles, loads of
new artifacts (named weapons), and several new special items that are
instrumental in winning the game.

2) Quite a few new monsters have been added to the game. The most memorable
is the Mind Flayer that I ran across the other day. Humanoid monsters are
also genderized now. (I.E. instead of "it hits," "he hits" or "she hits.")

3) Intelligent monsters now can do pretty much anything that you can. This
includes things like picking up and wielding weapons, quaffing potions or
throwing them at you, picking up and zapping wands at you, and much much
more. A basic rule that becomes very important is this: RUN towards any
wands that you see. If some gnome picks it up and it's a wand of lightning,
you're TOAST!

4) Virtually all of the methods of robbing a shop have been eliminated.
Going quickly through the methods listed in the WCST Spoilers, we find that
the following has transpired:

  A) Teleporting stuff out works. Unfortunately, the shopkeeper charges you
full price for anything you teleport out.
  B) If you dig in a shop wall or in the shop floor, two things happen:
first, the shopkeeper attacks you immediately, and second, any holes you
manage to dig "heal" themselves after a couple of rounds.
  C) Polymorphing the shopkeeper still works. However, it's still risky, as
the shopkeeper may resist the polymorph.
  D) Training your pet to steal still works.
  E) Teleporting out still works, but it still generates Keystone Kops. I
haven't checked to see if it's still possible to trap the shopkeeper in
     the shop with a boulder.

5) Polymorphing has changed somewhat. Now, just as you have a chance of
system shock when you polymorph yourself, there is a chance that when you try
to polymorph another creature it will die of system shock. Something similar
to system shock has also been added for items: Each time you polymorph an
item, there is a chance that it will just disintegrate. Additionally, when
polymorphing a pile of items, the pile may partially shuffle itself
(eliminating the strategy of piling things in order of plusses), or several
items may combine to form a golem, which will promptly attack you. In my
mind, this effectively limits poly-piling, and brings it back into the realms
of game balance.

6) Pets are now a lot easier to deal with. You no longer have to worry about
getting trapped in a long corridor when your pet walks in after you and then
kills something which was carrying a cursed item. The reason for this is
simple: If you attempt to move onto the spot where your pet is, you
"displace" your pet, moving it to an adjacent square or switching places with
it. Bravo, Dev Team!

7) Spellbooks are now a lot more useful and powerful. You can read
spellbooks multiple times, which in my mind makes a lot more sense. There is
still a chance of failure when reading a spellbook, though, and if you fail,
your spellbook goes goodbye.

8) Appropriate interruptions have been added to the game. In other words,
you no longer have to worry about things like starving to death because you
hit 300 and then the period key when you were weak.

9) A nicer user interface has been added for things like bags and chests
which can hold other things (thank goodness!).

10) Kicking chests, sacks, etc., can now break things inside, so be careful
about randomly bashing chests open.

11) Hallucinating is now a lot more fun (if that's possible). Whereas in 3.0
when you were hallucinating the game would randomly make things look like
other things in the game and make objects look like other objects in the
game, now they've added a whole separate list of things that you can see only
when hallucinating. For instance, you can get hit by the Ravenous Bugblatter
Beast of Traal now, or even be attacked by the Borg. I only hope that the
Dev Team has done a good job on researching copyright and trademark laws so
that we don't end up losing Nethack in a stupid lawsuit.

12) Several spells now have area effects. The most notable of these is
fireball, where an area will erupt in flame, possibly killing multiple
creatures, including yourself.

13) When using ESP (i.e. after you've eaten a floating eye), watch out:
Mindless undead such as zombies and skeletons no longer show up, because they
have no mind to detect with ESP. Vampires and such will still be visible
with ESP, though.

As you've surely read in the readme file, the game can now split off into
side levels (I.E., there may be two stairways down on a level leading to two
different levels). There are also magic portals that can transport you to
special levels. Before I show you the levels, two notes: a) on several of
the levels shown there are a number of secret doors that I have not shown on
the map -- I leave these to you and your imagination to discover; and b) I
show the levels relatively clear of monsters and items (except for important
ones) -- this doesn't mean that the level won't be littered with them! Now
then, hre's a rundown of the new levels:

1) The Mines: The mines split off from the main levels at a relatively low
level. You can tell that you're in the mines when you start running into an
inordinately large number of gnomes, which populate the mines in great
quantities.

2) The Mine Town Level: In the mines, you will find a level that everybody
has been praying for and asking for for quite a long time. It is basically a
"mall" level, and includes several shops and a temple. A sample mine town
level is shown below. Note that the central area is constant, although the
contents of the various rooms is not (I.E. which rooms are shops, and what
the shops sell changes). There are also a number of town guards that keep
the peace. Additionally, the rest of the level, other than the central area,
is random.

3) The Mine End Level: You will find that once you get to the last level of
the mines, you will be unable to go any further down, and will have to go
traipsing back up to go down through the regular levels. However, before you
do so, make sure that you thoroughly explore the end level. There will be a
hidden cache of valuable gems somewhere on the level. Below is an example of
the mine end level, and the character is standing on the cache of gems. The
door above him is a secret door which has been found. Note also that certain
areas of the level which appear to be open areas are in fact solid rock and
cannot be teleported into (the .'s are areas that can actually be traversed
through).

4) The Oracle Level: The Oracle of Delphi is still in the game, and in the
new version has been given a special level. An example level is shown below.
The central room remains constant, although I believe the placement of
statues is random. The rest of the level is also random.

                                               ------- -------

5) The Medusa Level: Medusa now has a special level devoted to her. She's
still very much like before, but they've taken more of the myth surrounding
Medusa and implemented it. In mythology, Medusa was on an island, so in the
game Medusa is now on an island in the midst of a sea of water. As far as I
can tell, everything else about Medusa is pretty much the same. Here's an
example Medusa Level (Oh, by the way, you can be sure that she's standing on
the stairway down):

6) The Quest: One of the sub-plots in Nethack is a Quest. In my case, since
I play a (neutral) wizard, the Wizard of Balance asks me to seek out the Eye
of Harmony from the Dark One. The Quest levels are also called the Home
levels. They are reached by going through a magic portal from a random
level. You'll know when you hit the level with the magic portal because
you'll get a message from your old Master (in my case, the Wizard of
Balance). There are several levels in the Quest, but the most important ones
are as follows:

A) The Quest Start: This is where you'll meet up with your old mentor and
he'll tell you what you need to seek out. An example level is shown below.
Several notes: The ^ shown is the magic portal back to the main dungeon.
The #'s aren't rock or passageways - they're mist, and they make seeing any
quantity of the level quite a chore. The @ shown is your Master. There will
be many other little acolytes blundering around in the tower.

B) The Quest Location Level: I have no clue why this level is called this -
I just know that if I play in Wizard mode, it lists this level as the quest
"locate" level. It might have something to do with the message that I
receive when entering it: "You sense the presence of the Dark One nearby."
In any case, as far as I can tell, it's just another level you pass through.
Here's an example:

C) The Quest Goal Level: This level is where the end of your Quest occurs.
In my case, it was the level where the Dark One was located, and he had the
Eye of Harmony. Once I killed him, it was mine to keep (or actually, mine to
take back to my Master, who told me to keep it - big surprise there!).
Here's an example (the @ shown is the big baddie you want to kill):

                     ------------- -------------

                     ------------- -------------

7) The Castle Level: The Castle level looks pretty much the same, but for
posterity's sake, here's an example (oh, do watch your step, though - I don't
seem to recall two of the rooms which are shown innocently blank below being
barracks loaded with soldiers in previous versions):

8) Valley of the Dead: The entrance to Hell (or Gehennom, as they seem to
have decided to call it in 3.1, presumably so as to sound a little nicer - it
all really amounts to the same thing) is a special level called the Valley of
the Dead. It's filled with wraiths, ghosts, and other nasty undead and demon
type creatures. As in the mine end level, there are sections (represented
below as blank spots without .'s on them) which are solid rock and cannot be
entered. An example is shown below:

9) As befits the princes of the underworld, a couple of them now have special
levels devoted to them. In particular, Asmodeus and Baalzebub each have a
special level. Example levels are shown below. A few notes about greater
demons, though: In 3.1, greater demons are incredibly nasty. They're all
really tough, really quick, really intelligent, and can teleport. For the
most part, this means that they will teleport in, attack you once or twice,
and then teleport away from you. Getting close enough to attack them, much
less actually kill them, is quite a feat. Those of you who used to have fun
sacrificing humans as chaotic characters and then killing off the greater
demons for the experience might want to think twice before trying it in
version 3.1.

10) Vlad's Tower: Vlad the Impaler was in version 3.0, and his tower was a
part of the dungeon that confused many players when they ran into it for the
first time. It's now changed slightly in form, and is three side levels, so
is less likely to confuse beginning players. The three levels are shown
below, side by side (as usual, Vlad's on the upper level):

11) Fort Knox: With all those magic memory vaults secretly hidden on the
various levels of Nethack there's got to be some sort of central cache,
right? And just where the heck is this mythical Croesus dude who supposedly
owns all these magic memory vaults? Well, the answer has been added in
version 3.1. In one of the vaults you will find a magic portal that will
transport you to Fort Knox. Fort Knox is crawling with guards and other
monsters, but is also loaded with loot. There is a central fortress
structure wherein Croesus lives. He has a large central vault filled with
thousands of gold pieces, but beware the multiple land mines strewn liberally
about the area. Also, be sure to visit the scenic towers of the fortress,
each of which is packed with valuable gems. Here's an example of Fort Knox
(the trap shown is the magic portal into and out of Fort Knox):

12) Fake Wizard Levels: In version 3.1 there are three fake wizard levels
located in Hell. They all appear to be very much like the wizard level in
version 3.0, but there is no wizard within them. I'm not even going to
bother taking up the space to show you examples, because you can undoubtedly
imagine what they look like.

13) Wizard Levels: In version 3.1, the Wizard of Yendor has a three level
tower. There are examples of these three levels shown below (as in several
other special levels shown, the center area is the only are which remains
constant -- the rest of the maze is random):

5. How to Win 3.1 - WARNING! MAJOR MONGO SPOILERS! NOT FOR THE FAINTHEARTED!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, now then. The typical nethacker will grab all of his list of major
needed magic items and immediately head for the Wizard. Teleport down
levels, magic map back up and Yo! There's the Wizard! Ok... he zooms in on
the Wizard, nukes the Wiz with his +50 Sledgehammer named Oblivion (not an
acutal new artifact), and grabs the... Wait a minute! The Wizard of Yendor
does NOT have the Amulet! What on earth do you do?

Well, here's a step-by-step list of what to do to win. First of all, you
will need to have defeated three opponents. The first is the Dark One,
located in the Quest levels. One of the items that he is carrying is a bell,
which will identify as a Chime of Opening. The second is Vlad the Impaler,
who will be carrying a candelabra, which will identify as a Candelabra of
Invocation. The third is the Wizard of Yendor, who will be carrying a book
which will identify as the Book of the Dead. Somewhere along the line you
will also need to pick up seven candles. These can usually be purchased from
the lighting shop which will be located on the Mine Town level.

Now then... level teleport down to level 55. That's the lowest level that
you're normally able to teleport to. You will undoubtedly have noticed
already (if you've played much) that there is a sort of level teleport
barrier at the Valley of the Dead, so if you're above the Valley of the Dead
it will take two level teleports to get to level 55 (if you're above the
Valley of the Dead and try to teleport to below it, the game drops you out of
teleport at the Valley of the Dead).

You will need to explore level 55 until you find a spot that says "You feel a
strange vibration under your feet." There is only one (random) spot that
says this, and there's no way I've been able to find out which is the right
spot other than just wandering around the whole level (except playing in
Wizard Mode).

Now then, make sure that your candelabrum is loaded. You can do this by
activating the candles that you have. It will ask you if you want to put
them in the candelabrum - say yes. Then light the candelabrum by activating
it. The candles will burn brightly.

Next, ring the Chime of Opening by activating it.

Finally, read the Book of the Dead. In a pretty cool display of text
graphics an area will erupt around your feet, surrounding you with a moat,
and you will see a stairway going down. This stairway leads to the Sanctum
Level. An example Sanctum Level is shown below:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |------------| |

| ---...........................| -----+--------------------- |
| |...........................| |...| |......| |....--- |
| ----.....................---- |...---....--- ---......| |
| |.....................| |..........| |..<..---- |
| -------...........----- --...------- |.....| |
| |...........| |...| |.....| |
| |-----------| |---| |-----| |
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

You will show up at the down staircase. This level is crawling with priests
of Moloch, but the area you want to head for is the central temple that you
can see off to the left. In that temple you will find the High Priest of
Moloch. He's got the Amulet of Yendor (presumably entrusted to his
safekeeping by the Wizard of Yendor after the Wiz got tired of hackers
constantly ripping it off from him). Note that you will also incur the wrath
of Moloch when you attack his High Priest. Oh well - life's a... uh, well...
you fill in the rest.

Once you've got the Amulet you've got to begin that long trek upwards,
because yes, when the Amulet of Yendor is in your possession, no matter what
you do you will be totally unable to level teleport (even in Wizard Mode -
that stinks). Fifty-six levels later, you'll be standing on that top
staircase, ready to go up to the end level. Go up the staircase, and when it
tells you to "Beware, for there is no return," GO FOR IT!

You'll find yourself on the Elemental Plane of Earth, and you'll promptly be
attacked by the Wizard of Yendor yet again. Nuke him, and then get on to
exploring. You will go through all of the Elemental Planes, and on each
level there will be one randomly located spot on which there is a magic
portal which leads to the next level. These endgames are a bear to go
through, but endure and you'll make it through.

I don't have screenshots of these levels, because they're basically open
levels with not much on them. Some notes: On the Elemental Plane of Earth
you MUST either be able to teleport, dig, or pass through earth (perhaps
polymorphed into a xorn). On the Elemental Plane of Fire you MUST be fire
resistant (big shock there, eh?). On the Elemental Plane of Air there are no
musts, but it is a big help to be able to polymorph into something that can
fly. Otherwise you'll try moving and it will say "You tumble in the air," or
"Moving through the air isn't easy," and so on. It takes three or four
keypresses to move each space and is generally a pain in the butt. In my
beta-test version, the Elemental Plane of Water somehow got skipped, but
presumably it would be good to be able to walk on water or polymorph into
something that can swim.

Once you've been through all the Elemental levels, you'll get to the final
level, the Astral Plane. This is where the final part of the endgame is.
There are three temples (one for each alignment - recognize this part?), and
the place is crawling with priests, angels, and other heavenly type beings.
Make your way to the appropriate temple, sacrifice the Amulet, and hey
presto! You've just ascended! An example of the Astral Plane Level is shown
below:

                              ---------------
                              |.............|

piqued your curiousity! I welcome any and all e-mail, and will try to answer
as quickly as possible. Thanks!
