                  *** MADMAN Version 1.0 ***
A role-playing epic by Dr. Dungeon

Welcome to MADMAN, the latest role playing game by Dr. Dungeon and
the Castle of The Mach Gryphon. MADMAN combines elements of role
playing and adventure in the tradition of games like Ultima 6 & 7.
You are outcast from your own land and declared a madman by your
own people, after a series of unfortunate occurances and the possible
loss of your own sister.

This leaves you with the difficult task of restoring your lost
honor as well as learning the fate of your sister. You escape on
a small raft which shipwrecks on a distant shore, where hopefully
you can find a way to return home and set all aright.

The game uses a sophisticated real-world system in which all objects
in the game function as their real-life counterparts, from sheering
a sheep for wool, to creating bombs from natural resources.

It uses a rich top-down, full isometric viewpoint in 256 colors,
and plenty of variety as you explore this fascinating land.

All NPC characters in the game have full-size, hand-painted
portraits. Inventory items are also visual, and can be dropped or
moved into any position you desire. All information of your
characters stats and inventory are on screen all the time. You may
choose to go in as a man or a woman, and the graphics will change
accordingly. The statistics will remain the same, depending on
which of the several character classes you choose from.

We think you'll like this latest Dr. Dungeon epic!

                  *** PLAYNOTES ***
MADMAN should run fine on any 486/33 system or better. It will run on
most Windows 3.1 and 95 configurations, but can also be booted to DOS.
(You'll know if you have enough conventional memory if, when you start
the game after the intro, it blanks out and exits to windows or dos
upon tapping a key. If this happens, you may wish to tweak your memory.
See DOS programs under help for win95 - or reboot to the dos prompt and
see that EMM386 is in your config.sys file.)

Despite how much total memory your computer has, you will need about
590K available conventional memory to run the game.

                  *** RUNNING THE GAME ***
Once you have MADMAN on your hard disk, remember it will take about
6 megs of space to install and run. You may put it in any directory, but
C:\MADMAN might be a good choice. MADMANV1.ZIP should unzip fine with
WinZip or Pkunzip 204g. Once its in, either type MADMAN at the DOS prompt,
or, if in Win3.1, choose File/run and find madman.exe

In Win95, you can use the START menu/browse/madman.exe, or better,
right-click on a blank spot on your desktop and make a NEW shortcut
to madman.exe

When MADMAN is run, there will be a title screen, then a start-up menu.
You'll want to select Create Character first. This is an entertaining
method in which you define the specifics of your character.

When done, you will be back at the menu. Select View Intro. This
is an animated sequence which sets the stage for the story.
After that, select Begin a New Game, and you are on your way.

Later, after you have a saved game, you can select Continue Old Game
from here to continue your adventures at a later time. Save often!

                  *** SPEED ***
You may customize the speed at which your character roams the land at
anytime by tapping the > (greater speed) or < (slower speed) keys.
This is the first thing you should do once the game is loaded to
customize it to your preference.

There are twenty six levels of speed delay, with one being the shortest
delay, and twenty six the longest delay. A message appears telling
the current delay as you tap > or <. This allows you to adjust the
game depending on your machine's speed. We recommend about 1-5 on
486/33's or 50's and about 8-13 or so on dx66's and Pentiums.
This feature is also useful if you wish to go slower in a dangerous
dungeon, or faster across open land.

                  *** MOVEMENT ***
Although MADMAN is designed as a mouse-operated game, you may also use
your numeric KEYPAD arrows to move in all eight directions. Just insure
that NUMLOCK is on. Usually you will move with the mouse. Simply move the
cursor anywhere near the player, and it will become an arrow pointing
the way. Left click, or left click and hold down to move in that
direction. Near the bottom of your inventory is a small map icon.
Clicking this will show you a blowup of the area, also helpful
in getting around and seeing where you are.

                  *** LOOK/ATTACK/TALK ***
To simplify game play, your RIGHT button defaults as a LOOK or ATTACK
cursor. Right click anywhere on the screen - in the main view window,
in inventory, etc., to get a description. If you right-click on a monster,
you will attack with whatever weapon you currently have armed. If you
right click on an NPC, you will go into TALK mode, and chat with
the person. Talking is self-explanatory as there is a list of sentences
to say to the person. Click them all. Talking is important in MADMAN.
You will discover the characters have new things to say as various
quests are completed.

                  *** INVENTORY ***
Your inventory is displayed right under your character portrait. It is
here where you store the many items found in the game. To pick up an
item from the ground, click the little open hand icon at the bottom. The
cursor becomes a crosshairs that you move over an item on the ground,
and click. It will fill the first available inventory slot, but you can
arrange inventory however you wish.

Note that to get an item from the ground, you must, as in real life,
be right near the item to pick it up. Dropping items is similar -
simply left click the item in inventory. The item becomes the cursor
which you can drop anywhere next to your character in the main
viewport, or into another inventory slot.

The same method is used to GIVE an item to another character.
Just drop it right on the character. If they accept it, a message will
appear and sometimes they will request to chat. Just right click the
person to talk as explained earlier.

Off to the right of your inventory you will notice two other little
icons - one of a coin and one of a little bag. The coin is your separate
purse where gold is stored. You'll find bars as well as coins in the
game, and when picked up, they do not appear in the inventory, but
go into the purse. Left or right clicking the coin icon will tell how
much gold you have.

The little bag icon is the rest of your inventory. When clicked, it
will flip flop the main inventory into two sections, where more items
can be stored. By dropping items on the ground, and flipping the
inventory bag, you can sort your stuff anyway you like.

To the right of the inventory is the "armed/wear" area. These four
slots are labled as to what you have on your head, your body, and your
two hands. Head is for helms, body is for armor, left hand is for
sheilds, and your right hand is where you put your weapon. Just left
click the item in inventory, then click it into the proper spot
to arm or wear the item. If there's an item already there, just
click the new item on top of it and they will switch. (Good way to
rapidly exchange weapons.)

The stats to the right of your character portrait will change depending
upon what items you have armed and are wearing.

                  *** YOUR CHARACTER ***
Your character portrait is in the upper right of the screen, man or
woman depending on what you chose in character create. Just to each side
are health bars - the green one on the left indicating your hit points.

It will go lower as you take hits in combat, step on lava, freeze, are
poisoned, etc. If yellow, you are getting low, if red, you could be
knocked out. Try not to get knocked out because it will lower your
experience which in turn could lower your over-all level and could
be difficult to win back.

To the right is a blue line, indicating your mana. Mana is the energy
used to perform magic. When you meet Leomund in Cliffside, he will
explain this further as well as give you your spellbook.

You'll also note that there are numbers to the right of the portrait
indicating things like over-all experience, level, strength, mana and
armor class. Hits points are given numerically here as well as mana -
these important stats are reflections of the green and blue bars.

As you increase in level, your stats will also increase. When you
right-click to look at an item on the ground or in inventory, see
also the 'B' number, for example, Halberd B12. This "bonus" tells
how strong the weapon is. When attacking an enemy, this value is
calculated along with your strength and dexterity to determine how
hard you will hit the enemy. A similar thing is true with shields.
The higher its 'B' value, the better its protection.

Remember when attacking, you must be right next to the monster,
unless you are using a ranged weapon, like a boomarang. In each
case, right-click to attack.

Sometimes, especially in the early stages of your adventure, a
monster may swat the weapon right out of your hand. Be watchful for
this and careful in getting the weapon back. As you become more
skilled in weapon use, this will happen less often.

                  *** USING THINGS ***
Right aside of the open hand GET icon is a similar one with a stick
in it. This indicates to "use" some item. LOOK and USE are two different
things. You can LOOK at a pocketwatch, but to see the time, you must
USE it - that is, click the USE icon, then the item you wish to
use. This goes for eating food, herbs, using a tent, a shovel, etc.

Some things on the land get "used" right away - for example, to use
a door, click the use icon, then click on the door. To pick a branch
from a tree, or an herb from a plant, click USE, then the tree or
whatever in the viewmap.

Other things need you to be near something logical to USE the selected
item on. For example, to use a shovel, walk next to a pile of dirt,
click the USE icon, then the shovel in your inventory.
(Good way to find gold!)

To use an ice pick, find some loose rocks on a cliff, stand in front of
it, click USE, then click the ice pick. Same with lockpicks (if a chest
or door is locked), fishing poles (stand near water), etc.

You can open a locked chest with a lockpick if your skill is high
enough, then simply GET the lid off the chest.

Some items have multiple uses - like a bucket. You can fill it
with water, dump it on the grass to grow plants, on farmplot to make
crops, or even on a campfire to douse it. Use sheers on a sheep to get
wool. There are many usable items. Experiment!

                  *** BUY AND TRADE ***
There are a number of merchants in the land, always willing to buy
and sell goods. When you are in a shop, you will often see a large
wooden table with the wares displayed. Right click an item and a screen
will pop up where the merchant will make you an offer, showing the
item in question, its price, and amount of gold you currently have.
Click the Y or N icon to say yes or no to the deal.

Selling things is similar - just left click the item in your inventory
then click it on the merchant, and a similar screen will pop up. (The
same way you GIVE an item to someone.)

Every step of the way in all these functions, little prompts will
appear at the bottom of the screen telling you what's up. If in doubt
how to use, get, offer, etc., experiment and watch the help prompts.

                  *** OPTIONS ***
The final icon is the little DISK icon in the bottom right of the
screen. This will pop up your options screen, where you can save a
game in progress, load a game, turn sound on/off (note that music is
not currently implimented in this version. We may consider this
depending on how well the current version is received.) Here you may
also continue back into the game if you clicked it by mistake,
or exit out of the game. Since MadMan is a large world, with many
things that can change as you quest, the save/load game may take
some time to load. This is normal.

                  *** GETTING STARTED ***
Here are a few pointers that will help you on your way. When you first
enter the game, you'll see a lovely blonde-haired lass walking near
a little farm. TALK to her. (right click on her) Take up her advice
and go to Dorona's place (its in the SW - use map icon.)

Buy the flowers (right click them), and make sure to pick up the
watch, sextant and bedroll. Take the flowers back to Tammy and drop
them on her. She'll ask to speak again. Right click her.

That should get you started. You can also play around with the stuff
in the farm plot - the gate, the sheers, the hoe, etc., to see how
stuff works.

Make sure to CAMP often (USE bedroll) - the madman or woman has dreams
occasionally that advance the plot. As you quest, you'll notice the
light dim as day turns to night - good time to camp to restore hit
and mana points. You can't camp in the early morning, though, or if
you are not at least somewhat low on hit points or mana.

In dungeons, look for torches on the walls. If unlit, USE any you
see to improve the light. You can even turn them back off.

Pick plenty of red berries (USE red flower-plants seen all over, then USE
the berries in your inventory. Stock up!). These are more nourishing
than most food and restore more hit points.

When you get your spellbook, use the clover plants a lot also, these
are like food but restore mana instead.

Talk to everybody and read everything. There's a lot of clues to be
found, not the least of which is to discover your primary goals in
this strange land. Good luck, and happy adventuring!

                  *** SHAREWARE ***
You'll see a lot in this shareware version of MADMAN, but it stops at
the entrance to Riverview. Registration is only $10 (ten) dollars,
and will give you the full game, which is much larger still and well
worth the ten bucks, I assure thee.

You'll learn, for example, if there's such a place as "The City of
Gold and White", you'll find incredible lava dungeons, walk on water,
fight ice golems, meet some VERY unusual characters, and end up with
an unforgettable endgame sequence.

You'll also assist in the development of ULTIZURK IV: Lord of the Cyclops,
my next game. It will be gigantic and SVGA, midi sound, the works - if
I can afford the hardware/software and team members I need to complete
it. A commercial game via shareware isn't a bad idea! Just a thought.

Registration of $10 by check or money order can be sent to:
