This is the amount of free Conventional Memory. It is strongly advised that before making any changes to yoursystem, you read your DOS User Guide (Optimizing YourSystem), for a good understanding of what is happening to yourcomputer. If you have DOS 6.0 or better first try using MEMMAKER. This isa DOS program that will optimize your system and is very easyto use. To use MEMMAKER, at a DOS prompt type thefollowing:memmaker [return]and follow the directions. If the memory needs are large (over 15-20K) your best bet is tocreate a system disk. This is a real good idea because it willnot disturb your original system setup on your hard drive. Tocreate a system disk use the format command with the /s switch. For example, the following command formats the disk in driveA and makes it a system disk:format a: /sOnce this is done you can copy over the autoexec.bat andconfig.sys files from the hard drive to the floppy drive by typingthe following:copy c:\autoexec.bat a:copy c:\config.sys a:These are the files that you need to edit to streamline yoursystem. By editing these files you can customize yourConfiguration. To modify them, type the following:edit a:\autoexec.batedit a:\config.sysThe crucial lines that you want to leave are the drivers for theCD-ROM drive, the sound card, the mouse and the memorymanager. Anything else is excess or fat and can be remarkedout (rem).Go to the noncrucial lines of the autoexec.bat and\or config.sysand rem (short for Remark) them out. This will remove any of the"fat" from these files. See the Before and After examples below.NOTE: Changes in the after are marked with asteriks (*).Before Editing CONFIG.SYS DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM HIGHSCAN BUFFERS=40,0 FILES=60 LASTDRIVE=Z FCBS=8,0 STACKS=9,256 SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS /E:512 /p REM ***** CD-ROM DRIVER ***** DEVICE=C:\CDROM\SBPCD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220 REM ***** SCANNER DRIVER ***** DEVICE=C:\MSCSI.SYSAfter Editing CONFIG.SYS DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM HIGHSCAN* BUFFERS=20,0* FILES=20* DOS=HIGH,UMB* LASTDRIVE=E* rem FCBS=8,0* rem STACKS=9,256 SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\SYS\DOS /E:512 /p REM ***** CD-ROM DRIVER ***** DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\SBPCD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220 REM ***** SCANNER DRIVER ***** driver is not needed* rem DEVICE=C:\MSCSI.SYSChange these files one line at a time and then warm boot yoursystem (CTRL-ALT-DEL). If your computer cannot boot after thechanges you have made, remove the diskette from the driveand warm boot your system again. When you return to a DOSprompt you can edit the files on the diskette and undo your lastchanges. From the melancholy|iorchards at Randril to the grand mazes of Sunassi, this was the|irealm of the Overlord. From the point where the sky meets the|isea to the tips of the Gurangas mountains, he was lord of all.|iThe dark lord surveyed his realm, and he hungered for more.|i|iTianna awoke at eight, and surfacing from her dreams, she|iturned her head on her pillow to gaze upon the sleeping body of|iVashnar. His smooth breath and calm face pleased her.|iVashnar had been despondent of late, and when he was angry|ihe was so much more a warrior, and so much less a prince.|i|iRumors had reached the palace of great movements beyond|ithe mountains in the somber realms. Some of the more|ifoolhardy adventures of the village had talked of venturing north|ithrough the mountain paths, into the Shadowlands, to|iinvestigate, but Vashnar had forbidden any to venture there,|iand none doubted the wisdom of Vashnar.|i|iTianna looked from the windows to the river of Caval, the river of|ieternity, whose song played through the village, and whose|iwaters, it was said, gave energy to the strong of heart. Her gaze|iturned up from the river, to the giant form of Holias, largest of the|iGurangas mountains, and there she saw sight that chilled her.|iAn army, a mass, a deluge of people, moving slowly down the|imountain like a black stain. She took a trembling breath, and|iturned to wake the warrior prince.|i|iFortimer had also seen the dark army. From his farm at the foot|iof the mountains it now seemed awesome to him, immense and|iunending, wrapping the landscape like a wave of death. His|idaughter came to him as he sat at the edge of his farm and|iwatched them.|i|iSapphire was eleven years old and already had all of her|imother's wisdom weaved into her face. She spoke little,|ipreferring to observe, and on the rare occasions she did speak,|iher voice was small and light, like birdsong. Fortimer looked at|iher - his child, his line, his blood - and pride welled within him|iwith every breath she took. She spoke to him and her words cut|ihim in twain.|i|i"Daddy, are they going to hurt us?"|i|iFortimer felt tears well up in his eyes. An hour later he and his|ifamily were slain. They were the first victims in the fall of|iKoranos.|i|i|i|b|iFrom Vashnar's address to the army of Koranos:|b|i|b|i|i|i"This day sees Koranos face its bitterest test. The dark hand of|ithe Overlord extends its grasp in our direction, and we in turn|imust face ourselves, and the courage that makes us men. Many|iof you have fought with me before, at the fields of Magellin, and|iat the Llinor pass: on those days we did not fail - though the|ienemy seemed more mighty than the gods - and thus shall it be|itoday.|i|i"I do not attempt to mislead you, my people. There will be much|ibloodshed in our lands today. But by the spirit which guides the|iCaval we shall be sure that none of our deaths shall be without|ipurpose, and none of us shall battle without honor.|i|i"We ride to the defense of Koranos, which has fed us and|ihoused us for five generations. We ride so that this city may|ihost many hundreds of generations for all of time. We ride with|iour hearts held high, and we ride with right on our side, so we|icannot fail."|i|iAs the army moved out of the main square, smoke was seen on|ithe horizon. Vashnar cursed under his breath, he knew that the|ifire was Fortimer's farm, and he knew that for all his fine words,|ihe was still mortal, and his life was temporary as a harvest fire,|iand as transient as the beauty of a rose.|i|iBattle was joined five miles after the army crossed the Caval.|iFrom nowhere they seemed to come, as if dropped from the|isky by some mighty fist. The Annubi, the Valkyrie, the Minotaurs,|iand Undead. All these were in the first rank of the Overlord's|iarmies, and though the men of Kuranos fought well, they were|icrushed by the size of the dark one's hoards. Vashnar saw his|icousin, Ulun, gorged on the horns of a minotaur, his quartered|ibody thrown to the Hell Hounds who ripped the still screaming|itongue from his mouth. Durranon, the captain of the guard, was|iconsumed in one of the hail of fireballs poured upon the armies.|iThrough the smoke and heat Vashnar made out the form of|iKeenan, his bravest Paladin, approaching him.|i|i"Vashnar, warrior prince, you must flee this place. We are|idefeated. You must not die: you must go, and take the name of|iKuranos with you. Maybe one day it will be safe to return here|iand make Kuranos anew. Return to your palace, take Tianna|iand head south, away from the Shadowland. Do not let our|ideaths be for naught my prince."|i|iVashnar turned and drove his horse west, back across the|iCaval, to the village. Keenan rode back into the fray, to die in the|idefense of his lord.|i|iRats and scorpions ran through the streets of the village,|isnakes climbed the walls of every house. The stench of burning|iflesh hung in the air, and though he could not yet see it, Vashnar|iknew that the palace was the same.|i|iTianna lay naked on the floor of the bedroom, clutching her|istomach and sobbing. As he turned her over Vashnar could|isee that she had been violated and branded by one of the|iIncendera, the "burning men" of legend who lived in the|iShadowlands. He wrapped her in sheets and carried her in his|iarms to his horse. As they rode south, to follow the river, the|iblood from her wounds stained the sheets. By the time they|ireached the borders of Kuranos she had stopped sobbing.|iLong before they reached the banks of the Caval, she was|idead.|i|iVashnar dismounted, and lay Tianna's body on the ground. He|iknelt over the body and began to weep.|i|i"A curse on you Overlord. By all that is good and pure in this|iwoman I swear I shall not rest until I have revenge on you."|i|iVashnar lit the sheets that wrapped his lover, and stood silently|iby her flames. For what seemed like days he watched her|ibody give its spirit to the skies and the land. Then he turned,|iand headed back northwards, following the river. And his eyes|iwere like pinpricks in steel, and his frown was as stern as the|iclouds.|i|iThree miles Vashnar traveled before he saw three horsemen|iapproach from the north. His heart froze as he saw that they|iwere servants of the Overlord, dark knights on skeletal steeds.|iThe undead come in many forms, but surely the most terrible is|ithat of a skeleton, a rotted human corpse, with its flesh long|isince consumed and two empty bottomless holes for eyes. The|ifixed grin of the jawbone presented a bitter irony to the warrior.|iHe smiled, and dismounted.|i|i"Who dares to stand before us?", said a cold voice from deep|iwithin the lead skeleton's robes.|i|i"Who Asks?", replied Vashnar.|i|i"I am Cthul Tol Anuin. Overlord of the Shadowlands. Keeper of|ithe Grim Mask of Gythdor. Your new lord and master."|i|i"And I am Vashnar Herenil, son of King Herenil of the Harbor|iLands, bearer of the Staff of Remiros, I challenge your|ileadership, Cthul Tol. I have cursed you on the banks of the|iRiver Caval, and I shall destroy you."|i|iI laugh at your curse, warrior prince, and at your sacred river.|iYour river flows northwards into my realm son of Kings, and it is|ithere that your bones shall rot when you die."|i|iI am not afraid of you."|i|i"Then we are well matched, Prince Vashnar, for I am not afraid|iof you. I am not afraid of you at all."|i|iA shooting pain ran up Vashnar's left side, and he felt the warm|iooze of his own blood on his thigh. He looked down to his side|ito see the end of a spear jutting from the right side of his|istomach. Then the pain began. Immeasurable pain, as his|ikidneys and intestines and skin and bones and blood all|iscreamed for help to his mind. And the scream of his body|ipassed from his brain to his mouth. And Vashnar screamed, a|iprimal scream, and through the layers of pain Vashnar was|iaware that the spear was being twisted and moved, gouging up|ithrough his back, and then, finally, withdrawn.|i|iHe stumbled back, clutching his stomach, and saw the standing|iform of a skeleton, the spear still in its hand. The grin of the|ijaw-bone smiled down at him, and the empty eyes called to him,|iand Vashnar saw himself on the ground with the skeleton|istanding beside him, and as he began to rise further and further|iupwards, he saw the skeleton kick his lifeless body into the|iRiver Caval. He turned away, towards the sky, where the arms|iof the earth mother offered to wrap him up and hold him, and he|ismiled.|i|i"That's the dream?", said Nanock.|i|i"The same every night for the past four days", replied Helver,|i|i"Strange."|i|iThey were sitting in one of the many taverns in the City of|iAquanor, capital of the Harbor Lands. The tavern was small but|ifriendly, and many adventurers came to swap stories and drink|iale. Tonight the tavern was packed, and all the talk was of|iHelver's dream, of the fall of Kuranos, of the death of Prince|iVashnar, and of why nearly a third of the adventuring community|ihad experienced the very same dream every night for the past|ifour days.|i|i"It has to be a call for help. It has to be," proclaimed Rathor, a|ipowerful cleric whose experience demanded that his words be|itaken seriously. "You want my guess, the prince is dead and the|ipalace hasn't told the people yet."|i|i"Maybe the palace doesn't know yet", interjected Helver. "It's|ifourteen days' ride to Kuranos, what if he only died four days|iago? That would seem likely. Surely we should seek an|iaudience with the King, even if only to warn him about the|idream."|i|i"If the dream has affected so many of us, I should imagine there|iare many in the King' s direct service who have also received it.|iThe King already knows: if he didn't, he wouldn't be King."|i|i"Then what do we do, pack our bags and ride north for sixteen|idays on the strength of a shared dream? It could be a trap.|iStranger things have been known."|i|i"I would like to speak please", came a soft voice from the back,|iand when the adventurers turned they beheld a bright white light,|iand in the center of that light was the spirit of a small girl, who|ibore infinite wisdom in her face. The room parted and slowly|ishe moved, silently, suspended in the air, to the front of the|iroom. And then she spoke, and her voice was like birdsong:|i|i"I am Sapphire of Kuranos, brought here by the power of the|iRiver Caval, to summon you to the aid of Vashnar Herenil, slain|iby the Overlord of the Shadowlands, and who lives yet in spirit.|iThrough the power of the River Caval, the River of Eternity, and|ithrough the power of curse, made by Vashnar at the side of his|ilover, his spirit shall not rest until the Overlord is slain."|i|i"That could take a long time", whispered Nanock to Helver. The|ilight moved towards him.|i|i"That, Nanock of Duannar, is why the curser is often the cursed.|iMany of you will have already received messages telling of the|ifall of Kuranos, and of the death of Vashnar. Vashnar asks four|iof the noblest warriors to become bearers for his spirit and|iguidance, and venture into the Shadowlands to retrieve his|ibones, and to exact his vengeance on Cthul Tol Anuin. Do any|iaccept?"|i|i"And what about afterwards?" asked Rathor, "When this task is|idone? How are we to be rewarded? How is the spirit of Vashnar|ito leave our bodies and reward us?"|i|i"In the inner sanctum of the Shadowland", the spirit whispered,|i"past the dungeons and temples, past the undead and the dogs|iof hell, beyond the mazes and the pyramids, lies the Overlord's|idark Temple, and in this temple there is an altar of regeneration.|iIt is thus that the Overlord has held his reign for so long. Place|ithe bones of Vashnar upon the altar, take the key held by the|iOverlord, and return Vashnar to life. Then you will see reward|ifrom this warrior prince. Reward such as you have never|iknown."|i|i"I'm convinced", said Nanock. "How will we know if we've been|ichosen?"|i|i"You will know", breathed Sapphire, and vanished as silently as|ishe had arrived.|i|iThe banks of the river Caval were lined from the entrance into|ithe Shadowlands to the burned out husk that was once Kuranos.|iMany people, ventured to the Caval that day some out of loyalty|ito the once and future warrior-prince, some out of more material|imotives, and many out of curiosity, but none expected the|ievents of the afternoon.|i|iAs the sun began to be eclipsed by Holias, largest of the|iGurangas mountains, the sky began to darken and a rumbling|ibegan from deep in the earth. The River Caval began to moan,|iand its moans were the cries of loss, the moans of those whose|ilives are taken as they follow their hearts, and the tears of those|iwho mourn the loss of an innocent. The quest may take you months, but thecontrols will be at your fingertips after only a few minutes.Shadowlands is loaded with traps, adversaries andconundrums. Your Objective is to guide your Four Warriorsthrough these obstacles to confront The Keeper - the UndeadGuardian of Your Physical Self. Defeat him and you canundergo the process of reintegration, uniting your physical andspiritual selves in the process of Self Realization.Remember: the spirit may be willing, but the flesh is extremelyweak!|bWe recommend reading the following detailed command|bsequences, however: a control summary is given at the end of|bthis manual.|b|bSTARTING OPTIONS|b|bWhen first starting the game you are presented with threeoptions -GENERATE CHARACTERS, QUICK START or LOAD ASAVED GAME.|b|uGenerate Characters|b|u|u|u|uWhen you begin Shadowlands for the first time, you will need tocreate your party of warriors. These four physical beings will beyour eyes, ears, hands and feet - they are the means by whichyour Spiritual Self can interact with the Physical World and, byeventually retrieving your body from the Undead, complete thegame.|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,0,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,16,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,32,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,48,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,64,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,80,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,96,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,112,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,128,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,144,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,160,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,16,176,20,13,|gSHAD7.PCX,331,7,192,20,13,Clicking on the (1) icon will invoke the Generate Charactersscreen. Along the bottom of the display are four characterportraits and you use these to determine the appearance andcharacteristics of your Warriors. Initially, the left hand characteris highlighted (with a border around its portrait), ready for you toedit. You can edit any of the characters at any time on thisscreen by first clicking on one of these portraits.|bChange Character Appearance|b|bThe currently selected character's face is copied to the largerportrait window at the left of the screen. To the right of this portraitare four small icons for hair, eyes, nose and mouth.Successively clicking on any one of these small icons will cyclethrough the available features for that character. You cancustomize any of the characters in this fashion.|bChange Character Name|b|bYou can also name the currently selected character - the cursorcan be seen in the panel beneath the four bar charts at the topright of the display. Type the desired name for your characterand press RETURN. The name will appear beneath the portraitof the character at the bottom of the screen.|bChange Character Attributes|b|bIn common with other Role Playing Games, each Warrior has aset of attributes that determine how he or she performs duringthe game. In Shadowlands, characters start with a certainamount of points relating to their STRENGTH, COMBAT ability,MAGIC level, and HEALTH.The program automatically assigns initial values for theseattributes for each character, indicated by the length of the barsbeside each attribute - the longer the bar, the more points thecharacter has. However, you can alter these if you want toadjust the balance of skills within you party. It would be tooeasy, however, if you could simply make one characterextremely strong and another a powerful magician from thebeginning. Instead, you click the on the CHANCE CARD(labeled with a ? at the top of the screen) to reshuffle the attributevalues for each character until you are satisfied. When you're happy with a character's appearance, name andattributes, just move on to the next one by clicking on its portraitat the bottom of the screen. When you've edited all the Warriors, click on the ENTER THE SHADOWLANDS swords icon tobegin the game. You will be prompted to enter theShadowlands data disk.|b? INFORMATION|b|bDon't forget that a character's attributes will change during thegame as he or she grow in experience.|b! WARNING|bYou are advised to save your game when you first enter theShadowland. If you die without previously saving yourcharacter, you will need to re-edit your part before restarting.|b|b|b|b|uQuick Start|b|u|b|uYou don't have to create a party of characters yourself: theprogram will do it for you if you prefer - just select this option. However, you are advised to create your own team if you areseriously committed to completing the game as the automaticteam selection may not come up with a set of characters ideallybalanced for your playing style.|b|b|b|b|uLoad Saved Game|b|u|b|uIf you have already played the game on a previous occasionand wish to recommence from the position you saved, selectthis option. You will find yourself where you left off, with yourcharacters in the same status.|b|bPLAYING THE GAME|bOnce you have entered the game, you will receive a reminderto save your characters if they are newly created. You arestrongly advised to do so, as new characters are particularlyvulnerable and cannot be resurrected except by use of theLOAD SAVED GAME option. The screen is your window onto the game world, presentingyour environment in isometric 3D style. Portraits of the FourWarriors are overlaid on it along the bottom of the display. The game is mouse operated and you use the portraits of yourWarriors to issue commands which they will then carry out withinthe game world. In general, these commands are issued byusing the left mouse button to click upon a part of one of theportrait's location in the game world. Full details of thecommand sequences are given below.Note that each warrior can only carry out a command involvingobject or destinations that he can actually see - that is, objectsor destinations that are within his RANGE OF VISION. Thisrange is dependent on distance and intervening obstacles (e.g.walls).The range of vision of a character is indicated for you by themouse pointer. When an action has been selected, the pointershows as a POINTING HAND icon when you are within thecharacter's range of vision and as an ARROWHEAD when it isoutside this range. The arrowhead can only be used on theportraits.|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,0,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,16,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,32,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,48,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,64,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,80,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,96,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,112,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,128,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,144,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,160,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,16,176,20,13,|gSHAD10.PCX,326,7,192,20,13,For example, click on the Red Warrior's (extreme left portrait)LEFT leg - which is the extended leg on the RIGHT whenviewed from your position. This invokes the 'walk to' command. Now move the mouse pointer across the screen and select alocation where the mouse pointer icon shows as a pointinghand. Click the left mouse button again and the Warrior will walkto that location.|b! WARNING|b|b|bIn this manual, whenever we refer to the RIGHT or LEFT part ofa portrait, we are referring to it from YOUR point of view, NOTthe character's.All actions in the game can be accomplished in this manner. Inaddition, the portraits also give access to information(INVENTORY) screens about each warrior - move the mousepointer over another portrait and click the RIGHT mouse button. The inventory screen for that character will now be displayed(but note that game time continues to pass in this mode -important to remember if you're involved in combat). Theinventory screen is described elsewhere in this manual. Toreturn to the action screen, just click again on the right handmouse button.|b? INFORMATION|b|b|uUsing the Mouse|b|u|b|uThe mouse is used in two ways in Shadowlands: to selecticons/objects by clicking on them, and for certain other actionsby 'dragging':|bSelecting Icons/Objects|b|bTo select an icon or object, move the mouse pointer so that it ispositioned over the icon or object and click (depress andrelease) the left mouse button|bDragging|b|bSome more advanced control techniques involve 'dragging' -place the mouse pointer over the location you want, press andhold the left mouse button. Now slowly move the mouse in therequired direction, whilst still holding the left mouse button down.|bButtons|b|bThe left mouse button is used to select actions, icons, objectsand locations. The right mouse button in Shadowland is used toswitch between the game screen and the inventory screenwhilst the pointer is over the required character's portrait, andalternatively to the center of the current character if the pointer isaway from the portraits.M	GA'hv5h),BG"`POh

Full instructions on this aregiven later..Secondly, they give you information about the Four Warriors, inparticular their health and their position in the game world. Theposition is indicated by the appearance of the portrait (seeUSING THE PORTRAITS below). The health status of acharacter is indicated by a horizontal bar graph at the base ofeach portrait.|b? As each of the othercharacters in turn falls out of the red character's range of vision, his portrait icon will be replaced with a facial representation.3)|m025REVERSED PORTRAITIf a character has his/her back to you, that means that he/she isnot only out of sight of the currently selected character, but is onanother level of the game.4)|m025SKULLSKULLS commemorate those Warriors who are no longer withus.|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,0,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,16,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,32,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,48,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,64,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,80,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,96,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,112,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,128,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,144,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,160,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,176,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,16,192,20,13,|gSHAD13.PCX,330,3,208,20,13,1|m025Skull2|m025Facial Portrait3|m025Action Portrait4|m025Reversed Portrait@g>z4t5s+d	J)o1m#@^|2Qp

',h$Commands may be issued to one character at a time, althoughother characters may still be engaged in tasks from earliercommand, providing a "multitasking" command structure. To issue a command to a warrior you must first click on theirportrait - the screen will move to their current location, and theirportrait will become an ACTION PORTRAIT (if it is not already).|b? INFORMATION|b|bClicking on a SKULL portrait of a dead Warrior will show thelocation of the body (this may be carried by another character). You cannot issue commands to a dead Warrior! The state of the other character portraits may change at thistime, showing their position relative to the current character.Warriors within visible range of the current character will havetheir ACTION PORTRAITS displayed; out of visible rangecharacters will have FACIAL PORTRAITS, or they will haveREVERSED PORTRAITS, or they will have REVERSEDPORTRAITS if they are on different levels altogether.Actually issuing command is simple. All you have to do is clickon the appropriate part of the body to perform the action. Thereare five body areas available for this purpose and, as you willsee, the control possibilities are quite logical. The headcontrols eating and reading, the feet control the two types ofwalking and so on...|bACTION HAND|bThis is always the LEFT hand, i.e. It is actually on the left side asyou look at the Action Portrait and could therefore be said to bethe Warrior's right hand. The action hand is used for hand tohand combat. Additionally, if an object is held in this hand, theaction hand is selected to USE it. Arrows that appear aboveand below the object enable other objects in the character'sinventory to be cycled through, placing each in turn in the handwithout having to use the inventory screen (see below).|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,0,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,16,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,32,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,48,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,64,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,80,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,96,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,112,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,128,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,144,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,160,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,176,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,192,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,16,208,20,13,|gSHAD14.PCX,249,17,224,20,13,1|m025Action Hand2|m025Lead Leg3|m025Transit Hand4|m025Walk Leg5|m025Head|bTRANSIT HAND|b|bThis is always the RIGHT hand as viewed from your point ofview. This hand is used for COLLECTING, DROPPING,THROWING, and OPERATING. Note that the Transit handalways remains free of objects, even if you have just used it topick something up (see collecting objects in the COMMANDSEQUENCES section below). Objects picked up areimmediately transferred to the Action Hand. The only objectsrelated to the Transit hand are SHIELDS - these are worn on theTransit ARM and are accessed only on the inventory screen.|bWALK LEG|b|bThis is always the RIGHT leg. i.e. On the right side as you lookat the Action Portrait. Its only use is to walk the character fromone position to another.|bLEAD LEG|bThis is always the LEFT leg as you look at the Action Portrait. This leg has the same function as the WALK leg, except thatwhen selected it causes other characters in the selectedwarrior's range of vision to follow him wherever he goes. Thiscommand is therefore used to form a SQUAD and the formationthat the character involved adopts is dictated by the SQUADFORMATION option, which is discussed in the INVENTORYSCREEN section.|bHEAD|bThere's only one of these for each character! It's used forREADING and EATING.|b? INFORMATION|b|bThere are more complex operations possible that may involveyour warriors in interaction with other objects or characters. These are accomplished by mixture of commands - throwing anobject, for example, requires that you click on the object, bothhands, and the destination.QSP?^:Xv-Lk4S#`25?DW	\

This screen is divided into5 areas.|bBACKPACK ITEMS|b|bThese are 16 slots in the top left hand area of the screen. Eachslot may contain a representation of a single object in yourinventory (i.e. carried by the warrior). Objects may be picked upand placed into other empty slots by clicking them, orexchanged by clicking over another item. You may sometimeswish to do this so that certain objects are placed in sequence inthe action hand during play. The item currently held in the character's Action hand is in aspecial slot to the right below the scales, where additionalinformation about the item is displayed and access to the magicsystem (see the section on MAGIC) is allowed.|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,0,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,16,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,32,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,48,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,64,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,80,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,96,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,112,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,128,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,144,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,160,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,16,176,20,13,|gSHAD20.PCX,345,9,192,20,13,1|m025Items in hand2|m025Character's statistics3|m025Chess board4|m025Sleep, eat and save icons5|m025Back pack6|m025Character portraits|bCHARACTER STATISTICS|b|bIn the center of the screen, below the panel showing thecurrently held object (if any) you will see a list of five attributevalues followed by three bar charts. Here you can check up onyour character's status.COMBAT LEVELThis will grow with experience. Characters generally start atlevel one or two.MAGIC LEVELAs Combat above but related to Magic power.STRENGTHThe first figure indicates your current rating; the secondindicates the maximum rating potential for the character.HEALTHIf a character's health reaches zero, he will die. His healthsuffers if he is thirsty, starving, injured or overburdened withitems. The second figure indicates the maximum rating potentialfor that character.ARMORIndicates the degree of protection currently enjoyed by thecharacter.FOOD (bar chart)You should keep a careful eye on this. Once a character's foodlevel becomes critical he will starve and his health willdeteriorate.WATER (bar chart)As for food, but replenished through drinking.FORCE (bar chart)Particularly important for Magic and in particular the charging ofspells. See the MAGIC section for more information.|b|bCHARACTER PORTRAITS|b|bOn the right of the screen, these allow you to examine othercharacters' inventories without returning to the main screen.Clicking on the name of the appropriate portrait will display therelevant screen. If characters are standing close to each other, then it is possibleto "hand" items between them on this screen - you must be ableto access their slots (i.e. their boxes must be highlighted andshowing the figure rather than the face only) in order to do this, therefore the characters must be standing quite close to eachother. The arrows allow you to cycle through the objects incharacters' inventories. To move an object from one characterto another, 'pick up' the object by clicking on it, move it over theinventory slot of the other character then 'drop' it by clickingagain on the left hand mouse button.Additionally, the Transit arm of the character in each portrait hasa special inventory slot which may be given a shield type whencollected. This provides limited damage protection and mayonly be done on the inventory screen.|bTHE CHESS BOARDS|bShadowlands offers a party of four characters and eachcharacter can either operate alone or as a SQUAD in thecompany of others. Furthermore, your party can split into twosquads with each one led by a different character. A squad willform whenever you use the LEAD command (see theCOMMANDS section) - who joins it and what formation they takeup is determined by using the chessboards on the Inventoryscreen. You can store up to five squad formations and setupsusing the function (Formation) keys 1 to 5. They come withdefault settings: to edit them, simply click on the requiredFormation number above the chess boards.|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,0,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,16,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,32,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,48,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,64,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,80,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,96,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,112,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,128,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,144,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,160,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,176,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,192,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,208,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,224,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,240,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,256,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,272,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,288,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,304,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,320,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,16,336,20,13,|gSHAD22.PCX,285,10,352,20,13,To create a single squad with all four players, use the left handchess board. Click on any of the pawns (each of whichrepresents one of the warriors - the color codes used are thesame as elsewhere) and move it to the desired square on theboard. Repeat this process with all four characters until thepawns are in the correct positions relative to each other for yourdesired squad formations. Now, whenever you use the Leadcommand and this Formation number is selected, the warriorswill take up the positions as indicated. To split the party into two squads, proceed as above butchoose which warriors you wish to work together and thentransfer them to the right hand chessboard, leaving the other(s)behind to form the alternative squad. For example, if you placethe red and green warriors in the right hand chessboard, thensubsequently invoking the LEAD command on either of thesewill cause the other to join him (assuming they are in sight ofeach other) and take up the appropriate position relative to hiscompanion. You can of course alter the relative positions ofthose left on the other chessboard in the same way.Note that if you have split your party in this fashion and therelevant Formation is selected, characters on one chessboardwill not respond to a LEAD command from a character on theother one. Different formations can be selected at any timeduring play using the function keys.|b|bSLEEP, EAT SAVE|b|b|bIn the center of the screen at the bottom are icons for Sleeping(an eye), Eating (a mouth) and Save or Load Game (a disk).|b|uSleep|b|u|b|u|b|b|bClick on the eye icon to send that particular character to sleep. His energies will replenish much faster whilst sleeping, althoughhe will be prone to being attacked. Used wisely, however, it can be turned to youradvantage. Many objects and events create light - torches, explosions, magical items, spells and even some creatures.|bUSING TORCHES|b|bTorches vary in their power and will gradually burn down. If youfind a lit torch which you wish to keep for later use, extinguish itand place it in a backpack. You can also place a lit torch in your backpack (where it will beheld in a special carrier outside the pack, designed especiallyfor this purpose). This has the advantage of generating light butfreeing the Action Hand for other uses. Used in this way, thetorch will occupy a normal inventory slot on the inventoryscreen.Any character generating light either from a torch or through theuse of magic has a flame icon in the top right corner of his ActionPortrait informing you at a glance who in a party is responsiblefor the current illumination.1)|m025Placing a torch on a wallIt is possible to place torches on walls - DROP the torch on thewall position whilst standing very close.2)|m025Lighting torchesSelect the portrait of the character you wish to control. ZSpells are found as parchments around the Shadowlands andmay have various effects and alignments. When a spell is used, the parchment's MAGIC FORCE is drained to a certain degreeand ultimately can become depleted. You can also find spellbooks within the Shadowlands. Each of these contains room forsix spell pages and parchments may be placed and carried inthese books. If a book is used rather than an individualparchment, then the spells contained within the book will be castone after the other in page order. Combine and order yourspells for maximum effect - a good sequence of offensive spellscan subdue even the most powerful opponent.|bUSING SPELLS|b|bTo use a spell, hold the spell parchment in the Action hand, select it, then highlight the target for the spell in the game worldusing the hand pointer. Some spells (e.g. Light) need to betargeted on a member of your team.|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,0,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,16,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,32,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,48,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,64,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,80,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,96,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,112,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,128,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,16,144,20,13,|gSHAD27.PCX,333,13,160,20,13,|bRECHARGING SPELLS|b|bMany objects in SHADOWLANDS have a level of enchantmentor MAGIC FORCE. The force is an energy contained in them. This controls how effective an object is. A sword with a MAGICFORCE of 67 is more effective than one with an MF of 9. Anapple with an MF of 34 is more nutritious than one with an MF of4.Your characters will have varying degrees of skill at absorbingMF energy from objects. This energy is absorbed into theirbodies (the amount is indicated by the FORCE bar on theinventory screen) and may then be transferred into magic spellto recharge them. The Laws of Enchantment state that this energy can only beabsorbed from objects (not charged into them) and only put intospells (not absorbed from them). This means that objects fromwhich the MF has been absorbed will become less effectiveand cannot be recharged. It also means that, as spells are usedthroughout the game, the total Magic Force in the Shadowlandsbecomes dissipated and material objects will graduallybecome more and more useless as they are drained of theirMF.To transfer MF from an object to a spell or spell book, go to theinventory screen. Place an enchanted object (i.e. one with aMagic Force value, e.g. bread) in the "held" inventory slot(below the scales). You will see below how much magic force itcontains. Click on the scales and absorb as much energy asrequired. Remove the object and place the spell or spell bookin the "held" slot. Click on the scales to charge the spell up asrequired. If a book is charged, then the MF is equally distributedamong the pages.|b?
